Okay, how does one keep a cat off one's desk?

Posted: Oct 5, 2010

I have a kitten and she loves to sit and nap on my desk which seemed cute at first, but not so much when I find my cable modem hanging by the cables and cords off the side of my desk and find my mail sorter laying in the floor with my bills scattered every where and it really isn't cute when I'm typing a stat report and she decides that is the perfect time to sit directly in front of my monitor and groom herself.  I put in the floor repeatedly through the day to no avail.  I've only ever had one other kitty and that was before I worked from home.  So I don't know a whole lot about cats except they are soft and cuddly.

Many things to try - Kittymama

There are lots of things to try. I have used balloons taped to the top of the desk. You can try tin foil (they don't like to walk on it), soda cans with coins inside (anything that makes noise when they knock it over), tin pie plates. Hope this helps and good luck!

These are good in the kitchen too to keep them off counters, kitchen tables, couches, etc. They won't even jump with the balloons there, just for a few weeks until they get the idea.

You think you can train a cat??? sm - Chris

Just kidding. I absolutely love cats, and always have at least two. They eventually learn. I have one who just taps me on the arm now, but I tell her no. However,I used to have a Siamese who got down right mean if you put her off;) Boy I miss that crabby cat. But, as I said, they learn sooner or later. I always have my laptop while watching television at night, and a couple of them, who would like to be lap cats, have learned to come over to my left side and snuggle in the chair beside me. Almost as good as sitting on me. Although there is also one who sits on MY CHEST all the time and is forever biting me. The chest thing was cute when a kitten, but she is rather heavy now and I can barely see over her;) Lets hope that yours is more trainable than this one. Oh, BTW, you can't rely on noise scaring all of them. I had one cat who had to run to INVESTIGATE noises, rather than run away. But, maybe you could just sit a vacuum cleaner next to you:) ALL of mine are terrified of it. BTW, I only have three. I sound like I have more, just wanted to make sure you didn't think I am a crazy cat lady. Not yet anyway, but you never know.

Love your post! I am a crazy cat lady, hence my moniker. I always have at least 3, right now have 6 indoor and now in the process of trapping and fixing the strays outside (5 done, 4 to go). Never a dull moment around this house! Two 15yo females, one 2yo female, two 7mo males and one 3mo orange cat (last 3 were strays who adopted me). Mine didn't take too long to learn the rules of the house, have patience and be consistent. A few popped balloons and they learn.

I had to laugh at this because my cat is such a pest! Whatever I'm doing, she has to be right in the middle of it. I put up with her being in the way most of the time but I knew I had to keep her off my desk when I'm typing. I know this sounds mean, but I just got a spray bottle with water and sprayed her in the face a couple times when she did it. It doesn't hurt them but they sure don't like it. After about 2 times, I would just pick up the bottle and she would skedaddle. Then she just knew to stay off that one desk.

I gave up and put a comfy lambcovered bed on part of my desk. For the most part she stays on it - but we still have the "monitor time". I think they just want attention and it is a good stress release albeit usually poorly timed. Give them two minutes and put them on their bed. It has worked for Socks and me for years!

With my dog I used a pet taxi, not sure if applies to cats - Dog n' cat lover

I know when I lived with my parents before getting married I would either put my dog in the other room or in her pet taxi when she wanted to get on my desk. She's a Papillon, small dog, so she was pretty agile in jumping up there. I can deal with her in my lap when I type but not standing on the keyboard ;)

Just relax and enjoy it. I have been a cat lady for years and when it comes to my desk or sitting on the newspaper when I want to turn the page, the cat rules. Here's a thought...try to make one sit on your desk when he/she doesn't want to! Cannot be done. I have no control over the furry little angels when it comes to the above things...or, my pillow for that matter.

Cats and monitors - RLee

One of my cats has to be around me constantly when he is in the house. Working from home made the attachment or bond even stronger. He would sit on top of my computer monitor and look down to see the screen and bat at the cursor, which was a big distraction when you are working. He would eventually curl up on the monitor and sleep while I typed. You should have seen how confused he was when my old monitor was replaced with a flat screen. He would wonder around behind it and back and forth puzzled and has now retreated to sleeping on my laptop case on my desk or my husband's computer chair in our home office. Cats are great company, but sometimes my are worse than having children, but I love them dearly.

I have no idea why you wouldn't want your cats sitting on your lap or blocking the monitor. It makes the day more fun. But, there is a cat shelf you can attach to the side of you desk. If link below doesn't work, google, kitt-in-box

I have a kitty condo, but only one can sleep on the top of that at a time and needless to say it is always the same cat that claims it. This gadget would be a GREAT idea for the one cat that chooses to be in the computer room with me, as the other one is always on the kitty condo. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Cats can be trained, just like a dog. Mine sit, stay, come and fetch. And, they know where they can and cannot go.

Training takes a lot of patience and a lot of reinforcement, but can absolutely be done.

One of the tools I have used in the counter war was a "scat pad", a hard plastic pad with spikey nubs. They have very sensitive feet and just a couple of leaps onto the scat pad taught them.

Cats, by instinct, want to be high up. Consider getting them a "cat condo" or "cat tree" or assigning them a perching point in your home. Ours have hiding places such as covered baskets, boxes we have built and window sill perches. They are happy kitties.

We have 4 cats, norwegian forest, 2 american short hair and a siamese. They are well behaved and enrich our lives so much. They are soooo lovable.

What is the personality of a Norwegian Forest Cat? I have read they are like a small dog, following you around. Is their personality different from your other cats? I have cats who follow me around, especially as they have aged, and it's so sweet. Also, one of my cats if we are sitting on the couch and I move an inch away from her, she moves an inch closer to me, and she is in my face all night long. If I turn my head, she moves to that side of the pillow, back and forth, all night long. Also had a cat who if she was sitting next to me she would extend her arm (leg?) so that her paw was always touching me. Are your Norwegian Forest cats big? How much do they weigh?

Desk Out Of A DoorOct 23, 2009
Have any of you ever built a good desk out of a door?  My desk is on its last legs.  I am remodeling and have several average doors that I could use.   What height would you go with?  What would you use to hold the desk up - fild cabinets, saw horses, etc?   Any ideas out there?   I would love it if I could come up with something interesting.   TIA. ...

What Sitting At Desk All Day Does To UsAug 15, 2015
I bet I'm not the only MT who has near-debilitating pain in the "sitz bones," aka ischial tuberosity pain.  It's directly related to the fact that I sit all day long at my keyboard.  I've tried buying ergonomic chairs and expensive seat cushions, adjusting my desk, sitting up as straight as I can, all to no avail.  I've even had 2 rounds of corticosteroid injections in both ischial tuberosities, right and left.  Ahhhh.....the effects of the steroid injecti ...

Any Suggestions For RV Laptop Desk For RV'ing?May 03, 2013
I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions.  We have a dinette in our RV (which is too high for comfortable typing height), and we also have a sofa, which is very comfy.  I'mtrying to find a portable, fold-up, table that goes low enough to use it sofa height and can come close enough to be above my lap, not out to the edge--want to sit back on the sofa basically.  Has anybody found anything besides a Tablemate, which I was afraid wa ...
