I bet I'm not the only MT who has near-debilitating pain in the "sitz bones," aka ischial tuberosity pain. It's directly related to the fact that I sit all day long at my keyboard. I've tried buying ergonomic chairs and expensive seat cushions, adjusting my desk, sitting up as straight as I can, all to no avail. I've even had 2 rounds of corticosteroid injections in both ischial tuberosities, right and left. Ahhhh.....the effects of the steroid injections take place immediately (after the pain of the shots themselves!) and give me about 4-6 weeks of noooo pain. It's Heavenly! Then the pain comes back. And it's not safe to get many cortisone shots over the course of a lifetime, as they reduce the body's ability to produce its own cortisone.
This week I will start seeing a physical therapist, which hopefully will make a difference. If not, the next step is an MRI to look for avulsion fractures right at the ischial tuberosities and then possible surgery to repair the fractures. I hope it will not come to that, as it will require extensive time off work.
I'm interested to know if, and how many, other MTs suffer the same horrific pain when you're doing your job. Our bodies were not designed to sit for so m many hours straight. My pain is so bad now that it's affecting my ability to go and down steps and even to bend over and tie my shoes. I can only compare the grueling degree of pain to that of a bad episode of plantar fasciitis and heel stress fractures, which I've unfortunately experienced many times in the past. The ischial tuberosity connects to several joints and ligaments, including the hamstring.
Ischial tuberosity pain also affects some runners and athletes, as well as bike riders.
This article tells of the hazards associated with "sitting" type jobs:

I'm all ears as to any methods others have used to eliminate or greatly reduce this literal pain in the you-know-what!
;
Did your PT give you exercises or stretches to do? Did you try massage? I'm desperate enough to take out a loan to pay for massage therapy if it'll work. The pain is nothing less than excruciating, and it's constant. I can't believe it isn't a common condition among people who sit all day at a desk; yet, I've never heard of anyone else with it, besides you and me. I hear it all the time in bike riders and runners.
