Now the neighbor cat is bringing out the big guns! There was a mouse gift at the back door this morning! HAHA! Oh, my. I'm assuming if she needed food she would have eaten it?;

She is really buttering you up to become a member of the family.

I hate those little gifts. At least this cat was respectful enough to leave it at the back door. Mine think they owe it to me to bring IT in the house, dead or ALIVE!!

very set in his ways, king of the house, etc, and then one day this beautiful snowshoe cat shows up and starts hanging around the house. At first I fed her outside, but finally decided she was just too sweet not to be part of the family, and believe me, she was glad to be get out of the cold! Anyway, the old tom protested for a while, but finally he got used to the newcomer. I don't think they are exactly best buds, but every now and then I do catch them playing together, so I know I made the right choice.

The cat belongs to her duplex neighbor. My daughter started leaving water on the mutual porch and then a little dry food every so often. Her neighbor/owner of the cat said it was fine. So now daughter lets cat come in with the heat, mosquitoes, and all.

She bought a litter box so cat could stay in if she wanted, but scratches on door to go out.

Bird on car Monday morning.

AND Cat used litter box for the first time tonight.

Note: This ONLY applies if the neighbor is just an acquaintance and not someone who would come to/in your house.

I think you should adopt the cat as a house cat, but NOT say anything to the other neighbor. The reason I say this is she MAY say no, that it's her cat, and then get upset about you caring for it. Then the cat would be back to being alone, miserable, and feeling like you turned your back on it. :(

In my mind, in this situation it's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

Cats are so independent that once they decide where they want to live and who they want for their "people" it's a done deal anyway. My thought on this is that if this were someone's dog, a person would never assume ownership without checking with the previous owner first, I don't understand why people think it's different when a cat shows up at their door. Where I live, there are also issues with the ASPCA. If a person lives within the city limits and keeps a stray pet more then 3 days, it becomes their responsibility to purchase a license, spay/neuter and vaccinate. Regardless, it would be better if someone could make it an indoor cat, it's not safe for cats outdoors, either in the city or in rural areas.

There is also a duty of care to the animal that the "owner" has totally neglected. The neighbor obviously doesn't give two hoots about the cat. I've never understood how anyone could even attempt to claim "ownership" of an outdoor cat that roams free. That's just ridiculous, unless you also feel that one can then lay claim to that cardinal because it hatched from a nest in your tree. Or the raccoon that lives under your porch.

That's assuming the animal does not already have an owner. If the decision has already been made to claim the cat, why are we having this discussion? If the neighbor decides she wants it back, that's going to be the OP's problem. I still think the courteous/neighborly thing would be to be honest about it and get it out in the open instead of trying to be sneaky and wondering how she'll react later.

Well, my legs and ankles are mostly normal now. I think I lost 10-15 pounds and took finally four Torsemide two morning and two in afternoon to do it. I have diastolic heart failure and that plus my low potassium threw me into a bad spell with swelling that would not go down. I do feel some better though. Well, it has been a month, short of 5 days, that I walked away from the medical field and medical transcription after over 23 years. Yesterday I went for my repeat films after receiving a call last Monday concerning an area of concern. The possible nodule again was seen on yesterday's films. They did an ultrasound which did not pick it up. The radiologist said he does not think we are dealilng with anything serious, but has advised me to return in six months for repeat films. Yesterday Tiny received one dose of Lysodren, 1/4 pill. She actually vomited a few times the day before she ever received it. Well, I went Monday to my cardiologist and he put me on new diuretic. So far it works in the morning, but I swell in the afternoon and evening. If two once a day do not work, I have to take four (two twice a day) and two potassium. I just wish something would work.
