Texas rolling blackouts

Posted: Feb 3, 2011

I'm on the east coast, and the majority of us use natural gas or propane for heat, so we've never experienced rolling blackouts in the winter.  This may sound like a stupid question, but why are Texans experiencing the blackouts?  Do the majority of businesses use electric heat?  Why would they be using more electricy now than when it's 120 degrees in the summer?  (hence, my stupid question)  I heard they had to buy some power from Mexico.

Rolling blackouts are a strategic method used to not overload a particular power grid.

Yesterday we had that freak freeze that came through, as predicted and the utility companies implemented the rolling blackouts grid by grid. The power (that I know of) was ever out for more than 30 to 45 minutes per grid.

I have an electric ignition stove and water heater, but it was not a big deal. Phones, water and gas were going off and on probably due to the severe freeze, not like the electricity.

A lot of people use electric space heaters and probably had them all cranked up.

I am from the very south of Texas and it's almost 10 a.m. and still -1 degrees, where as usually this time of year we are in the 40's - 50's.

They did "buy" extra power from Palo Verde nuclear plant, but it's nothing new, we regularly get a portion of our power from that source anyway.

That's right. The gas outages were because the pressure dropped from excessive use in areas. I was without heat from my electric heater OR gas heater for about an hour and it was COLD last night.

Supposedly it's not suppose to be that bad today, but it is still very, very cold considering our usually very moderate winters.

Was without electric most of yesterday. They said it'd be out for up to 30 minutes and on for at least two hours. I was without it for about 5 hours and then had it for 15 minutes. Finally around 8:00 last night it was on back for good.

Another bit of news for those of you who have followed my posts the last couple of months - my (now) ex of just one week has informed me that he is getting married. He left to move to another state today so i don't know whether they did it this morning on their way to move or if they are going to do it once they get up there.  So essentially my 10 year old son is going to have a step-mom that not only has he never met before but is also the one that broke up his family to begin with.&n ...
