Texas Instruments to lay off 5% of its workforce, Denny's (sm)

Posted: Nov 15, 2012

to charge 5% surcharge to its customers to pay for Bozocare.  Highest # of new jobless claims in Ohio and PA.  Thanks, Sheeples.

I dislike this also - very much - but I didn't vote for the blank. - OP

Our county unemployment went up to 9.5% again - backwards typist

There are only 2 counties higher than ours in this section of the state: 10.5 and 11%.

Nothing new here.

don't know why so many are surprised by this... - anon

nobody seemed to believe that all of these happenings were just waiting in the wings to see who was going to be elected as president. Most got what they wanted, now the repercussions are beginning, and they are all like :-O what???!!! Layoffs?? Price rising??? Unemployment??? But...but...but... yeah, well, don't cry now because you thought things would be "so much better!" Haven't seen any betterment yet! Obamacare = Titanic!

Nope. The educated among us realize Sandy's impact - on the numbers and

Sorry to disappoint you but the counties I speak about weren't impacted by Sandy. They were impacted by manufacturing plants closing or layoffs.
but you decline to tell us what the industries are - we cannot comment in the dark

You didn't need to have your roof blown off to have been impacted by Sandy.

But unemployment is going to go way up due to Sandy.

Not the poster you replied to, but.... - sm

We live in the US. Don't know which country you are in right now.

Unemployment has been on the rise and has nothing to do with Sandy. Of course local people affected by Sandy will get some of it (the ones in that area), but Sandy isn't causing TI & Denny's and other companies on the west coast, south, mid and north to lay off. Sandy has nothing to do with the continued rise in unemployment.

I can understand the lies before the election to get your guy back in, but now that the election is over the lies need to stop.
County. Not country. - RC

I didn't say Denny's and TI had anything to do with Sandy.

I said unemployment was going to go way up because of Sandy. It was an addition to the conversation, and it's very true.

Jobless claims in OH and PA are directly attributable - to disruptions by Sandy

[ In Reply To ..]
as has been reported by numerous reputable sources. TI's decision is driven by a private company's internal management decision to restructure its wireless business costs and focus on "embedded markets with greater potential for sustainable growth" in response to competitive pressures arising out of our private enterprise system. Of course, workers are first in line to take the hit while stock holders are losing no sleep over the change. As for Denny's, you have John Metz to thank for his decision to drive his own customer's away while he decides to to make an openly hostile partisan political statement against both the plan and his employees:

"If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare."

Of course, like many of his extremist partisans, he's blind to a third option customers have to exercise the time-honored American tradition of voting with their pocketbooks by boycotting his backside out of business. The biggest loser in this scenario will ultimately be Mr. Franchisee, who seems to have a highly exaggerated view of the power his gigantic ego wields.

Numerous reputable sources? Who might they be? - MSNBC? LOL

People think by their pocketbook. - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
They want the lowest possible prices, yet want the best in service, clothes, etc.

People complain every day about prices going up, then complain when businesses move out of the country. How can you have the best of both worlds?

Government and universities keep touting a college education for high tech occupations, yet high tech doesn't make every day products. So where would manufactured products come from?

Food comes from a lot of countries nowadays. Truthfully, I don't feel safe or trust buying food products that are produced in China, yet it's getting harder to find American food. I was shocked to buy a can of mushrooms produced in China when our state is 3rd (used to be 1st) in mushroom production. Food should come first from our American farms, but a lot of products are no longer being grown because corn and soybeans are more profitable for the ethanol business.

Low-paying jobs from other countries seems like the only answer. Got another idea?

Texas Rolling BlackoutsFeb 03, 2011
I'm on the east coast, and the majority of us use natural gas or propane for heat, so we've never experienced rolling blackouts in the winter.  This may sound like a stupid question, but why are Texans experiencing the blackouts?  Do the majority of businesses use electric heat?  Why would they be using more electricy now than when it's 120 degrees in the summer?  (hence, my stupid question)  I heard they had to buy some power from Mexico.  ...
