I need a phone just to connect to the internet on my home wifi. Straight Talk has phones you can get for free that are activated when you purchase a 30-day service plan. I really don't need to be able to talk, text, or use their data. Is anyone familiar with these phones? What happens when you do not purchase another 30-day plan? Would the phone still be able to be connected to my wifi or would it somehow be deactivated? I understand I would not be able to make phone calls, text, or use their data without the purchase of another plan and that is fine. I don't need any of that. I was just hoping I would be able to purchase the $45 plan and get a cheap phone that I could still use with my wifi after the first month. Thanks! ;

You pay less than $10/mo. for service if you use only WiFi. You only pay extra if you use their network (which I believe piggy-backs on Sprint). They have several different phones available, and the selection changes fairly regularly.

I used Ting for a while. IMO you need to - be pretty tech savvy

to like it. I'm sure it is good if you are, but I found it frustrating to talk to their young, super-nice reps because it was like we were talking different languages. If you are pretty tech savvy, then it will probably make sense for you, but I was lost. None of their phones available at that time was cheap enough for me. The rep assured me that I could just go on Amazon and get xyz type, but this is probably where I started running into problems.

managing my Ting account, and I would not consider myself tech savvy. Setting up the account was a breeze and using the phone was no more difficult than using the same phone with any other service.

If I don't understand something a customer service rep says, I just ask questions until I understand. As you said, the Ting reps are very, very nice. The very few times I've had questions, they have been able to answer them so I can understand.

I got a Samsung Galaxy S5 (after the S6 came out) for about $150 less than everyone else wanted for it, so I was happy with their phone selection.

Clearly, not everyone will find what they want at Ting, but I did, so that is why I recommend it.

I have the ATT Go Phone plan. I pay $10 for the $2.00/day plan because I have a landline and only use my cell phone when I run errands and have to call a taxi. No data and my phone is connected to my home internet, plus I have it set to pick up the Wi-Fi in the grocery store or where ever I am

I do that now with my iPhone - off the grid

I was not able to keep paying my cell phone bill and Sprint cut off my service. Since then I use my phone to connect to my wifi (or a store's wifi). I can use Skype to make calls via wifi, browse and post to FB, play some games, etc.

If you buy a month of service like you are talking about and then it expires. you can still access wifi. You don't have to buy more service unless you want to and continue using the phone via wifi.

I currently have a Dyson Animal which is about 7 tears old or so.  It's great on carpet and I have no issues there BUT I don't have carpet anymore. The Dyson just doesn't do that well on the bare floor.  I have tile floors and a boat load of cats, hence a boatload of cat hair.
