Let's talk vacuums

Posted: Aug 30, 2013

I currently have a Dyson Animal which is about 7 tears old or so.  It's great on carpet and I have no issues there BUT I don't have carpet anymore. The Dyson just doesn't do that well on the bare floor.  I have tile floors and a boat load of cats, hence a boatload of cat hair. I also really miss the ability to clean unde things easily which is tough with the upright.

I'm looking at canister vacuums again. Anyone have one that they absolutely love that works great on bare floors?

If you plan on keeping the Dyson - Helper Monkey

if you need it for area rugs, the absolute best vacuum I've ever used for hard floors is the Eureka Mighty Might. I used to work for my mother's house cleaning service, and I've used many different vacuums (including many expensive brands/models), and this is still the best... and it's cheap and very lightweight. Unfortunately it's not a canister and it's not good on carpet, but if you keep the Dyson, it could be an inexpensive solution to your problem. I have one now (and 2 dogs and 2 cats including 1 long hair), and it works great.

I have a canister - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
and I absolutely love it! It is called the Sanitaire and is made by Electrolux. When my old vacuum conked out after 11 years, I took my housekeeper with me to the vacuum store and we tried out every vacuum including the highly-hyped Miele (think big $$$$$) but we thought the Sanitaire was wonderful and it is. Good on carpets, good on hardwood floors, very strong suction, could probably pick up a car. It is very easy use, is light but very powerful. It was not at all expensive. It's the best vacuum I have ever had!

you triggered a memory - NK

[ In Reply To ..]
They used to sell Electrolux door to door. My father-in-law sold them and said they had a meeting every morning and sang "Electrolux is worth a million bucks, Electrolux I love you."

Sorry, OP, couldn't help myself. That's what happens when people get old. :)

Thanks for the great memories! When I was a little kid we had an Electrolux. It was much heavier and harder to use than the one I have now. Have a great day! :)

I started using a - back-pack

[ In Reply To ..]
shop vac. Very strong suction. Works great on bare floors and short carpet, and I have cats too. Super long cord means I can do nearly whole (small) house without plugging and unplugging. Filter but no bags. Also turns into blower so I can blow leaves out of my small patio. Apparently on sale at Sears now:

Do you have to keep cleaning the filter? - Freebie

[ In Reply To ..]
I was thinking my late D/H used to have one and I gave it away because the filter was always plugged but he used it in his wood shop so that might have something to do with it. It was huge but light weight. I didn't see the back-pack one but I'm going to take a better look. Those others look pretty good, too, not too huge.

I empty and knock out the filter - after every use

[ In Reply To ..]
mainly because there is so much cat fur in it. Larger debris goes into the container. Unit I have is not too heavy. I got the idea for using a backpack by watching the guys clean at my gym. Seems to cut my vac time in half, and now I wouldn't have any other kind.

Thanks ladies - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I had been looking at the Electrolux. It is uniformly rated high on all review sites I've read. I seen the Mielle, but that's way out of my price range no matter how good it is.

I never thought about a shop vac, though. That's an interesting thought. I'll have to explore that further.

You all are great. Thanks for the feedback.

About the Miele - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it's mostly a status thing, really. We tried out nearly every vacuum in the store and of them all, the Miele was the clunkiest and the most expensive as well ($1500)!!! I think it is kind of a status symbol to have one. Sorry, but this old gal is perfectly satisfied with her Electrolux!

My sister is paying 2300 for hers and didn't realize it and it's reconditioned. The insides are rusting, the belt broke while she was trying to use the shampooer the first time. She's so sorry she bought it.

SHARK. Hands down. I've tried them all with dogs, cats, long-haired humans. - no belt to burn. THE BEST nm

purchased a Shark and I agree, this is a great one. You can use it as an upright and it comes apart and you can use it as a hand-held canister for stairs and corners of walls and ceilings. I love it.

My parents have a Rainbow - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't afford one, although I think you can make payments on them. But that thing is WONDERFUL. It does just as good on carpet as hardwood/tile, it shampoos and even can be turned on just sitting there as an air purifier. I think they have had theirs about 5 years or so and it is still like new. I believe it has a huge warranty as well, maybe even lifetime?

Whatever you do, - don't get the H2O vac...

[ In Reply To ..]
I had actually 2 of these (TV special) a while ago, and while they sound good on paper, lugging all that water around got pretty tiresome. They may not even still make them. LOL!

Try a Rainbow. Downside is expensive but - if you paid all that for a

[ In Reply To ..]
Dyson that was good for 7 years, the Rainbow will last 4 times that. No filters, all the dirt goes into a water tank that you dump out. I've had a used one since 1993 and it was roughly 10 years old when I bought it. My mom had hers for 30+ years. It has a power head for the carpets and a big brush for the floor/walls, and a smaller brush thing for furniture that you can take the brush off of for a closer fit. It's cumbersome, but it's the best I've had for uncarpeted floors, and I wouldn't trade "Big Bertha" for the world.

PS - One thing I like above all else is the - brushes are made out of hair, like good

[ In Reply To ..]
cosmetic brushes, and not plastic. I don't know about the newer models' brushes though.

I've gone through 2 Rainbows so far. - FBL

[ In Reply To ..]
have been shopping for a third one. Bought the first one new around 1980 for $1200. All of the hoses started cracking and tearing up, so gave it away (idiotic, I know) and tried other brands. Got another used one in the mid 90s. It worked but made a funny noise that was annoying, so my husband took it to collect bee swarms. Have tried just abut everything else, really really want another Rainbow.

How do the newer models compare with the original? I have dogs and cats, no carpet. I loved to use it to dust and clean upholstery, and to mop the floors.

I hope you kept all the attachments. It's cheaper to - replace an attachment like

[ In Reply To ..]
a hose or a cord or the little things that holds the tank to the motor unit than it is buy a whole new one. As long as that motor is good, parts are easy to find on the internet including after-market parts that are really Rainbow in disguise. I found that out when I thought I needed a new powerhead floor attachment.

Get a SHARK! Sm - Old Woman

[ In Reply To ..]
I bought one about 6 months ago and love it. It is not the top of the line machine, but it does a good job on both carpeted and noncarpeted floors. I could not believe how much dirt it sucked out of my carpets... And I thought they were clean. LOL. It has a couple of on-board attachments and also has a lift-off canister to make getting to the high spots easy. My only complaint so far is that I wish there were an extension for the crevice wand so that I could reach a little higher as I have vaulted ceilings in my home.

Extension. - Please sm

[ In Reply To ..]
One idea for an extension is to use the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels, or whatever else you can think of. Use as many as you need, using duct tape to close any gaps. I have not tried it, but read about it somewhere.

I have had mine for about 12 years now, bought it used from ad in local "trading times", $500,($1400+ new) had not been used much at all, was in great like new condition complete with shampooer and a zillion other attachments/tools. It is well used here. Have replaced the power cord as dog chewed on it, though it still worked just thought it would be smart to fix. I think we have replaced two or three belts in all these years, and a new bag attachment boot (attaches the bag to the actual vacuum). One of our dogs does not like the vacuum and he attacked it one time too many and killed the components in the bag holder. We try to vacuum when he is out but does not always happen; he really does go nuts on it pretty crazy. It is a G5, needs a good cleaning itself, but it is a workhorse and still works great. The shampooer is great. I used to use it about once every month on the carpets, now about once a year, but does a great job, probably prolonged the life in our carpet by many years. But Kirby's are very durable and I highly recommend.

Speaking Of Vacuums And FloorsMay 20, 2014
I'll be moving in a couple months, from a house with hardwood floors and carpet, to a new house where I've elected to have vinyl "fake hardwood" due to aging dogs who are becoming less housebroken the older they get. What's the best way to take care of vinyl? My only experience with it is the linoleum I have in my current kitchen, which needs waxing, and I understand the newer stuff is much easier to take care of. ...
