Please Don't Forget

Posted: Dec 11, 2009

I know that times are tough and there is a lot of "no money" going around but I just thought I would offer a reminder NOT to pass your local Wal-Mart (or whatever store) bell ringers without giving them something. Believe me, there are people out there that are worse off than you or I. I see people by the dozens stick their hands in their pockets, squeeze themselves tightly on the way toward the door and plant their eyes firmly on the pavement in front of them just to get by without shedding a few cents. If it is the case that you don't think .45 cents out of your pocket will help, do it any way. Always find a way to be open to giving. No, I am not a bell ringer either. LOL I am just one of the ones who hates to see others passing by as I am giving change out of my pocket and believe me I need help myself. Merry Christmas to all, and to all who may get offended by the word Christmas, please just insert your own special name for it and carry on with the Holidays.

Normally i'm not a downer and I try to give when I can but I came across a "bell ringer" outside of our local grocery store - talking on the cell phone and smoking a cigarette with the same hand she was ringing the bell with. Yeah - that's a real upstanding individual! I was disgusted at their behavior!!!

The money doesn't go in the bell ringer's pocket... - JIG

I know of lots of disgusting people and some of them are "pillars of the community." Don't judge a bell ringer by her cover. She doesn't get to keep the money.

no but they are supposed to represent the company - Silly Girl

A smile and a Merry Christmas goes a long way!!
Wait - So what?
[ In Reply To ..]
Now they are suppose to smile, wave, wear nice clothes and kiss our butts just to make you feel good about helping someone?
Or are you saying the Smile and Merry Christmas should come before you donate? Ahhhh, Gotta get something out of it ey?
Wait - noncompliant

Good one!

I mean COME ON!! AND then again ask yourself why you don't volunteer to make a difference?? At least that bell ringer on the phone is TRYING to make a difference!!

Poppa always said, "if ya ain't part of the solution, you're part of the PROBLEM!!!"

Pennies make a difference folks. Just pennies.

I guess this was to Silly girl - ??

So, your disgust with this singular individual's behavior prevents you from dropping a couple of pennies in the canister for the needy? Nice.

Merry Christmas!

For them yes. I would much rather participate - Silly Girl

in the local Stuff the Sleigh for foster kids or the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. I mean, how hard is it to smile and at least make it seem like you are not being put out by ringing a bell!?!?!
At least they are giving their time - Tina

and probably give throughout the year. Do you? The needy aren't only needy at Christmas time. I don't do as much as I should, but there is an older lady in town I have quite taken to and I do all I can for her such as giving her rides to the store and nursing home, loaning (giving when possible) money as I can when she runs short for the month and is out of food, even paid to have her house sprayed for roaches as she was overrun with them and then helped her to set off spray bombs. Most people look down their noses at her as she is poor and odd to be sure, but she has a heart of gold, loves the lord and sings his praise, and never has a bad word to say about anyone. You, I'm sure, would be one to look down your nose at her. As stated earlier, never (NEVER) judge a book by its cover, you may miss a wonderful story!!!

Some of the messages just kind of take away from the spirit of the holiday season, and they shouldn't.

Thank you for posting this message as a reminder. I am so guilty of just walking by and not putting anything in the bucket (did that last weekend - ughs!) and now feel bad that I didn't. Don't know what was in my lame-brain mind that I just walked by. Have to go to the store tomorrow (hopefully the sleet will stop soon) and I will put in a few dollars and whatever change I can muster from my purse.

You are so right that there are people less needy than us. I may be living penny-to-penny, but I'm grateful to have a roof over my head and not go hungry but there are people in worse situation than I am. I just gave some canned goods and other food that the boy scouts picked up a couple weeks ago for the food shelter, but wish I could do more.

As to the poster below/above about not donating because someone wasn't dressed right or talking on a cell phone or smoking a cigarette or other reason, I just don't know. Made me sad that someone wouldn't donate because they don't like the way the bell ringer looked or acted. I'm sure they were probably doing anything they could to stay warm, but please don't take the frustration out on the less fortunate because of who was at the collection bucket. I think these people need our help no matter how tight things can be for all. Even as little amount as 45 cents will bring someone a hot cup of coffee, or a hot cup of cocoa for a child.

I hope all will celebrate the season for the reason it is meant to be.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, and whatever your religious belief/un-beliefs I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season.

If Romney and Obama team up to eat a bag of live puppies during the debates, the only difference in the two parties will be which candidate they think did a better job eating those puppies.  So, this brings me to a conundrum.  How many people on either side believe our differences are resolvable?  I.e., if you don't get 100% your way, will you be miserable for all eternity?  It sounds like most people on both sides will be.  Romney creates universal health care and ...
