I need to make an appointment to get thyroid checked

Posted: Feb 20, 2013

I already posted this in response to someone else's post.  I don't have insurance, but the dentist at the dental school I went to affirmed I have thyroid nodules (really, I have more than one?)  I'm afraid to get this checked out, I don't have insurance, how am I going to afford Synthroid?

It's 49 dollars for the office visit + cost of tests.  What if they want to do a biopsy?  I need tires, blah, blah, blah, dental work, blah, blah, blah....

Do you have mobile health in your area? - just me

We have a program here where once a month, everyone without insurance trudges to a certain spot, where doctors are volunteering to help them out for free. If something is discovered and the person has to have treatment (surgery, etc), the program will pay for it. The lines are long and it takes hours, but it's a way to get care that would be otherwise unaffordable. I would check to see if there is a program like that where you live.

I've seen this a couple of times on TV - wheres_my_job

They do good work. Although it is scary to see so many people there!!! What is wrong with this country (sorry, couldn't help a little editorializing).

I have a doctor that is $49 a visit, for one issue at a time. Got the shingles out of the way - now the thyroid.

Thanks for your input. Haven't heard of any of those mobile clinics in this area (fortunately or unfortunately I live in a prosperous area (though I am not personally prosperous).

Do a little calling around - sm

I was surprised to see a tiny little ad in our paper for a free clinic. It was almost microscopic. Try looking under your city or county offices for the public health department or other human service office and they should be able to direct you. Phone calls are free.

I don't know how much Synthroid is, but I take Armour thyroid and it's less than - $15 a month. nm

Synthroid - anon

I go thru a grocery in my area and they offer some rx for $4. One month of Synthroid is $4, $10 for 90 days. Not expensive. See if you can get it done at a local teaching hospital. Then if they do a biopsy, you can ask the financial department for assistance with your bill. My thyroid was removed 8 yrs ago and I had no insurance (statutory employee). They wrote off the entire bill when they factored in my income or lack of!

What a relief - something I can afford! - wheres_my_job

Other people in my family have thyroid problems and are on Synthroid. Don't know if this is me yet, but we'll see.

Thanks for the info!

My levothyroxine/brand Synthroid is $4 a month - whiteiris1231

I had I-131 treatment a few years back. Brand Synthroid controls me best at a lower dose, but levothyroxine at a higher dose does the same for $4!

First of all, Synthroid is pretty cheap. In my area, Wal-Mart has a prescription drug program for those who lack insurance and generic meds are $4 bucks and prescription are $12 bucks.

ALSO, I worked as a nurse for an endocrinologist and we got TONS of samples of Synthroid. So many that we couldn't even possibly use them. You can ask whatever doctor you go to if they have samples of it on hand. Also, it is the law that in the doctor's office we can't have expired medications, but the shelf-life of meds is still potent YEARS after expiration. So, when meds were about to expire, we would call patients who were on the medicine and give them literally tons of samples just to keep them from throwing them away.

Lastly, you can contact the maker of the medication for many of them and they have programs where they will give you free or cheaper medications through their programs.

Yes, I can remember samples when I worked in clinic - wheres_my_job

This is all making me feel a little less anxious about going to doctor about this. So afraid of needing a medication I can't afford.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been an MT, I should know all this stuff. I do know it. I just get anxious about it.

Maybe you won't need medication. sm - anon

You don't know what it is yet. I found a big lump in my neck and after fine-needle-aspiration it was determined to be benign multinodular goiter. Have to have it checked once a year. No meds. TFTs normal.

I looked MNG up on internet - wheres_my_job

Maybe this is what I have - have to find out. Just need to call and make the app't. I hate when they ask for my insurance, and I hafta say I don't have any......I hope your MNG isn't too troublesome for you.

I dont have insurance either and I have taken Synthroid when I did have insurance. I didnt have nodules but that does not even sound good. You must research more about this and see if there is a natural hormone you can take. I know that a drop or two of iodine in your water for a couple of weeks (there is some kind of regimen on this) can also help your hypothyroidism. I dont have a car to go to the store to get iodine and I dont have the money and I dont ever remember to get it whenever my son does give me MY car. I wish I could just run away. Please do research a little bit. Even Edgar Cayce had some good advise.

APPOINTMENT MONDAY Jan 06, 2012
Monday I go to the hand specialist for de Quervain's tenosynovitis I have had now for two months.   So far all conservative measures have failed.   I had to make the appointment for after January 1, due to a change in insurance for me.   I am dreading the cortisone injection, if he decides to go that way.   I have heard horror stories about wrist injections.    WISH ME LUCK.   I am not proud of being afraid, but I can't h ...

I'm Thinking Thyroid?Oct 08, 2015
Okay, for the last month or so I've come to realize my hair is exceedingly dry.  I normally have to wash my hair every other day because it is oily, and even though this is great that I don't have to wash it so often, it is a real change from what I am used to do.  So far I've let it go 4 days, but by the looks of my hair, I could go longer.  It doesn't seem oily at all.  Also, at night I'm a furnace (this has been going on for a while though).  ...

Hypo To Hyperthyroid & Thyroid NoduleFeb 24, 2016
I had been hypothyroid for 30 years on Synthroid.  Suddenly I started losing weight and have lost 70 lbs over the last year. I didn't have insurance so could not check this out until recently.  T3 and T4 were very high. Ultrasound showed a small nodule on the thyroid and thyroiditis.  I just had the first part of the 24-hour thyroid uptake scan today.  I won't have the results until I see the endocrinologist next week.  Has anyone else had their thyroid change ...

Had only been to the work-related ones, but opened this one today and got kinda hooked.  Some of you are so witty!  Loved the thread about "what do have to much of."  To the one who said Chinese take-out, I almost had tears laughing so hard.  That is so my mom.  No matter where they go for take-out, if there are condiments left over, they go into a plastic baggie in the fridge door, never mind the fact that they have at least one of each in bottle form.  Love this p ...

Let's increase the number of HB2 visas from previous years.  I do wonder what those workers are paid.  Is the real reason that there are not enough workers or is that just the excuse these companies get to use for paying less wages?  Maybe if the places like Mar-a Lago would pay a decent wage (no, I'm not talking about $20 an hour), which I am sure they can afford, maybe they would be able to get Americans to work these jobs. ...
