Gearing up for a craft show - let's do it1

Posted: Oct 12, 2013

Was waffling, thinking, deciding, wondering - then today, bam! I just decided, I'm gonna do it!  I've got about a month to churn stuff out - make some big pieces, then some smaller things (lots of smaller things), some fun humorous things.  Just to guage interest, before I start putting stuff on eBay or Etsy.

Fun, but a lot of work from now till then.  Really have to paint like a demon - just now I realize demon and lemon are pretty much spelled the same - anyway, getting off track!  But I've got a ton of ideas, and boom! clear the decks...

My dad told me a story about my great-uncle, who made fishing lures and lead sinkers - he put a hook in everything, that way he could dip them in paint, then hang them up to dry, he put a trough of some kind under them, to let them drip into.  So anyway, with the spirit of my great-uncle investing all my creative efforts - it's all good.  My grandmothers both sewed, and my one grandmother refinished and reupholstered furniture.

Today when my niece came over, I had some of my stuff I'm painting for Halloween, ahem, "all over the place," she was just looking at things and then looking at me - no, I am not your typical aunt!  She is turning 12...that tender in-between age...

anyway, on to the craft show!  Just wanted to share what some of the possibilities are, when your ENERGY is not getting SUCKED AWAY by medical transcription - you can do it!  Quit, stumble, fail, and then rise back up.

why I like this post - anon

I have exactly 1-1/2 semesters to go, then hopefully I will find myself far, far away from MT and leave it behind me for good. I work and attend school full time and feel like I am driving myself to the nuthouse/poorhouse in the process.

But posts like yours help keep me going, hopefully seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. I long for the day when I have free time. I long for the day when I can get my arts and crafts out of the closet and work on them with the joy I once felt for them. Hope your pursuits continue, are prosperous and bring you much joy.

thank you so much for your comment! - wheres_my_job

1-1/2 semesters - so close, and yet so far away! Believe, you will be so much happier once the whole MT thing is out of your life. Last night I was watching a speech someone was giving on a topic I was interested in, and painting at the same time. I realized I was happy doing what I was doing. Generally, I don't have realizations of happiness.

I also have some tapes for learning Russian someone gave me - if I can find a tape recorder, I will listen to that and paint at the same time.

Anyway, I can't imagine being an MT AND going to school at the same time - particularly when the working conditions are the way they are - no work, horrible VR, low pay, etc.

YOU DESERVE A MEDAL!

Keep pushing ahead, one day this will all be a nightmare you look back on and shudder in horror.

Question For Craft Or Sewing People. Jun 05, 2015
Has anyone ever used a sewing awl for heavier fabrics like Carhartt type work pants? My husband is a welder and gets small holes burned in his clothes at times.  Then I have to patch them,  I have used those iron-on patches and the results are questionable.  Then I tried permanent bond fabric glue, which isn't too bad but eventually comes off after washing everything and have to put it in the dryer. We are in an apartment with no room to hang up 3 suits of he ...

It's Been Awhile Since I Posted To This Forum. With Republican Candidates Gearing UpAug 19, 2011
and throwing their hats into the ring for the upcoming elections next year, I decided to sift through the archives of this board, going back to 2008 election and up to Obama's inauguration.  It was interesting to read all the very heated posts on both sides of the party lines.  In January of 2009, the last thing I posted on the subject of Obama was: "Time will reveal King Obama's inexperience and shortcomings." It made me wonder, where are all those passionate Obama support ...

Did Anyone Catch The Beck Show? Not His Usual ShowNov 13, 2009
If anyone didn't catch it, I'd encourage you to watch it this weekend.  It wasn't his usual show that everyone hates.  He had an audience (not sure if there were any white people, mostly African-American) and they were talking about issues and problems.  Most of them voted for Obama and they discussed issues going on.  It was very interesting. One guy showed Obama where he grew up in the Harlam and what it was like for him growing up.  It was just a very g ...

Fascinating TV Show From 60sNov 09, 2009
Just happened to switch to a channel showing 60s version of a 'Boston Legal' type show.  Came in on the middle of the show but the plot was about a man who lost everything he had ever worked for because of an illness he could not pay for - no insurance or insuffienty insurance (not clear). Not only was he dying from the disease, he was crushed by the financial disaster his illness caused. What I was so struck by was the closing statement:  And remember this show w ...

Tickets To A ShowNov 16, 2009
OK, here is the deal.... I have a 20 y/o and a 13 y/o and the holidays are soon approaching.  I always get a family gift we can all enjoy; last year it was the Wii.  This year I thought it would be fun to get tickets to see a family show and Disney on Ice is way too young for my kids and some shows are over my 13 year old's head... so I am thinking Blue Man Group or Stomp.  Of course I live in a little podunk town in Iowa so my destigntions are limited... mainly to Omaha ...

Hoarders (the Show)Jan 02, 2010
Has anyone seen that show (Hoarders)?  It's one one of the DirecTV channels - Discovery or The Learning Channel or something like that.  Now, I admit that DH is a packrat and without me around, it would be a tad cluttered around here.  When he accumulates too much crap, I box it up, label it and put it in the attic.  If he doesn't miss it for several years, it goes in the garbage.  I thought we had a clutter problem.  Wrong.  They go into these peopl ...

Men Of A Certain Age -- Excellent ShowFeb 01, 2010
Just love this new show!  I've been following it since it started and it only gets better.  It is so smart and clever and well written.  I so look forward to Monday nights.  What gets me is choosing which new series to start watching and then hoping it doesn't get canceled.  Or not starting with a new series and then it ends up being a huge hit.  Just can't win when it comes to that.  If you haven't seen it, you gotta catch it -- tonigh ...

Hillary Put On Quite A ShowJan 23, 2013
during her Benghazi testimony. Gotta luv her little show of outrage. TRANSCRIPT: SENATOR JOHNSON: Again, again we were mislead that there were supposedly protests and something then sprang out of that, an assault sprang out of that, and that was easily ascertained that that was not the fact, and the American people could've known that within days and they didn't know that. HILLARY CLINTON: With all due respect, the fact is we had 4 dead Americans. Was it because of a p ...

Anyone See That New TLC Show Extreme Couponing?Jan 05, 2011
I only saw one episode and am addicted. It's insane! For those of you who have not seen it, this show follows 4 people who are considered extreme couponers.  These people spend hours and hours finding and cutting out coupons to save money. It shows how many items they bought, what they bought, what their original bill would be, and how much they actually paid after their coupons. They have a system down, very organized almost to the point of OCD. They showed their stacks upon stacks of ...

Wonderful Nature ShowNov 16, 2011
Tonight I just finished watching "My Life As a Turkey" on Public Broadcasting.   Anyone who loves animals and nature would love this.  It is about a man who found and incubated wild turkey eggs, raised them and lived with them in the forrest for 1 1/2 years.  This was truly an inspirational film and so beautifully demonstrates the bond between man and the animal kingdom.   I would be interested to hear what others thought of this wonderful story.    T ...

I Understand Fox News Did Not Show The Jul 29, 2016
He gave a wonderful speech about his Muslim American son who was killed in the line of duty and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. I think his speech was one of the best moments of the evening. If anyone wants to watch, I have included the link. I gather Fox probably didn't want to show anything good at all about Muslim Americans, much less see the father of a Patriot who died in the line of duty wipe the floor with Trump, which he definitely did. ...

Even The Daily Show Was Shocked Oct 24, 2013
Even The Daily Show Was Shocked by This Racist GOP Leader's Responses   The Daily Show's "field reporters" have dealt with a fair amount of hilariously oblivious responses from interviewees over the years, but on last night's show, correspondent Aasif Mandvi appeared to have been caught off-guard by just how hilariously oblivious his interviewee was. Speaking with Buncombe County Republican precinct chair Don Yelton on the subject of North Carolina's  ...

Liberals Show Just How Immature They Are Nov 09, 2016
Because the election did not go they way they wanted, now they are protesting in the streets throughout the country. Attempts at interviewing them to get their viewpoint, they filth that comes out of their mouths is the typical Liberal speak. Students at Yale were "excused" from tests because they were too upset to take them following the election. Guess all these protesters must be racist, sexist, xenophobes, "baskets of deplorables" because they refuse to embrace Trump. ...

She showed a lot of class.  She stuck with the policies of the U.S.  She did not let herself get goaded into a Sarah Palin bash.  She was very dignified in her answers to Larry King. This board has turned into a hatefest over Sarah Palin.  Get back to what is going on in the world.  We have a lot of issues that need to be worked on whether we are Conservatives, Dems, Liberals or Progressives. Family Feud Game ShowNov 11, 2011
Have to share.  Saw the funniest thing on late-night rerun.  Couldn’t sleep so was channel surfing when I stopped on a rerun of the Family Feud game show.  It was at the beginning when the host was asking everyone what they did.  The host came to a gentleman and asked him.  The man hesitated and did not answer.  So, the host asked again.  Finally the man said with a sheepish smile:  I own a medical transcription company in Alpharetta, Georgia, wher ...
