Checking acct overdraft question.

Posted: Mar 1, 2015

I accidently wrote a large check from my acct instead of someone else's. A week(!) after the overdraft, I received the notice online. I have been charged $35 three times a day for 1 week. Once a day would be reasonable, but 3? Is this normal? This is the first overdraft that I can recall. I wanted your thoughts before calling the bank tomorrow. Tried finding info online, but keep getting routed to their overdraft protection services sign-up page. Thanks for any info. ;

I'm shocked - that they would charge

3 times a day. I've personally never heard of such a thing. Even once a day seems excessive, but I guess I've heard of that. I will say I accidentally had an overdraft one time also, and when I went in and explained, very calmly, they said they would remove it since it was the first time. I was very grateful and said I'd say good things about them, so that's what I'm doing now: That bank was PNC.

Talk to manager - Susan

I have gotten help by calling the manager of the bank, explaining the error, or in my case it was a company renewing a subscription or something unexpected. I've had most of the fees credited as I've used this bank for 20 years. Three times a day is excessive! Could they have charged you 3 times as much the daily amount as it included a weekend? If they really charge you 3 times a day I'd definitely change banks! Good luck.

Go to the bank in person and discuss it - with the manager.

You need to understand why it happened. It might have been an error, or the person to whom you wrote the check might have tried to redeposit it three times a day for a week.

Whatever it is, the manager can deal with it for you, if they feel that there are extenuating circumstances.

Get the overdraft protection.

My thoughts - sm

I would think you would be charged for each check that tried to present that would be insufficient. So if you had 3 checks trying to present against your account in OD status, you would incur another $35 three times. If you had 10 checks show up you would have $35 X10. However, I don't think if this is the only check that is OD and the account has been static since that one presented and took you into OD, there should be anything more than one $35 charge.

Cover it - Another opinion

The first thing you need to do is cover the overdraft or they will just keep charging you, also go to the bank and talk to the manager. I have never heard of being charged 3 times a day unless items are being presented for payment from your account and bouncing. The $35 is not a one time charge, it is for every transaction as long as you stay overdrawn. Sign up for overdraft protection and keep some money parked in savings so that they can transfer funds if it happens again. I have that in case I mess up. My bank charges $30 per transaction. All banks are different, so you really do need to talk to them in order to get it straightened out.

Thanks for the responses. - MUPpuppy. sm

I looked at the statement more carefully and believe "sm" was right about being charged daily for 3 transactions initiated after the overdraft. Will go to the bank tomorrow and talk with a manager. I do take responsibility for this stupid mistake, but it can't hurt to ask if some of the fees can be removed. Hopefully being a customer for 20-plus years + first overdraft helps my case.

Fact Checking Obama's Budget SpeechApr 22, 2011
Some very interesting info in this article.  President Barack Obama misrepresented the House Republicans’ budget plan at times and exaggerated its impact on U.S. residents during an April 13 speech on deficit reduction. Obama claimed the Republicans’ "Path to Prosperity" plan would cause "up to 50 million Americans … to lose their health insurance.” But that worst-case figure is based in part on speculation and assumptions. He said the GOP plan would repla ...

Interesting Checking On Syria And Iran Building A Naval StationOct 23, 2012
All the pundits, news bloggers, etc. are making fun of Romney's comment on Iran and Syria. I was curious, so looked up a map of the Syria and the relationship between Syria and Iran. It sits on the Mediterranean Sea. So, no problem with Iran building a naval station in Syria. It gives Iran 2 ways to get to the open ocean and since Iran and Syria are bestest buddies, it makes sense. It would also give Iran and Syria access to missles being able to hit our allies since Iran's missles wo ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
