Cat attack

Posted: May 18, 2012

What would you do?  Our cat attacked my husband tonight, and now he wants to get rid of the cat.

We found the cat seven years ago in a park.  He was really dehydrated and had an injured leg.  We took him home and brought him inside.  The vet thought he was probably around a year old at that time.  He also was not neutered.  My husband refused to get the cat neutered because he was not a kitten, so he said it wouldn't help with spraying, etc. and it would just change the personality of the cat.

I can't quite remember how long we had had him, but I would say not more than a year, when I had taken him outside (we only let him go out if someone was with him) and when brought him back inside, he was obviously not ready to come in because he got really upset and started howling at me.  Then, he jumped up and pretty much looked like he was jumping right at my throat.  I grabbed a pillow off the bed and smacked him with the pillow mid flight so I wouldn't get attacked.  The cat ran into the other room and was fine after that.  My husband just laughed about the whole thing.  Other than sometimes trying to spray, we didn't really have any other problems with him for a several years.

Last year, he attacked me again.  This time, he came in at my leg and bit me a couple times.  I got out of the room and shut him in there and then he was fine after a while.  My husband again just laughed about it and said he was probably just trying to play, which he absolutely was not.  He has grabbed onto my leg sometimes, rolling over on his back and just grabbing on with his paws or swatting at me, but not in a vicious manner.  This was totally not like that at all.

So, tonight, my husband said the cat attacked him for no reason.  He says he was just sitting there watching TV and the cat jumped up on the chair next to him and bit him several times.  He does have probably about 12 puncture marks on his arm.  He is saying we need to get rid of the cat.  I'm really upset.  I understand that the cat was bad, but when it happened to me, my husband just said I must have done something, but now that it is him, it is a whole different story.

Sorry if I'm rambling, but I've gotten attached to the cat and I'm really upset.

have the cat neutered - sm

If you are attached to that cat, let your husband know. Then, have the cat neutered. It's better for the cat and will likely calm him down.

Hmm. Well, it's Springtime, and this time of year an - un-altered male animal of most species - sm

pretty much has one thing on his mind. Maybe the hormones are currently running high.

He could be trying to tell you he wants to go outside and mate. Or fight with other male cats. (One of many reasons why neutered pets often live longer, healthier lives). It's never too late to alter a cat. Adoptable adult cats & dogs that end up in shelters or rescues get neutered or spayed before they're adopted out, so that at least that animal won't be producing any more unwanted animals.

It's always possible he may be trying to tell you something else, however. How is his health? Might be worth getting checked out at the vet. If he's in pain (which cats by nature, as predators, will stoically hide), that may make him irritable. You have to be really observant of them, especially when they think you can't see them, to get an idea of what they're really thinking or feeling.

If he's a highly active, athletic type of cat, he might be bored, and your reactions when he attacks could be highly entertaining to him! Or, he might have a stronger hunting instinct than other individuals do.

Did you both tend to play with him kind of rough when he was a youngster? Like letting him "attack" your hand, etc? It's cute when they're little, but not so much when they're bigger. Some cats, even when being given affection, like petting, can get overstimulated and nippy. Maybe he's that personality type?

Does he have some nice quiet hiding places where he can go to get away from everything when he wants to be alone? Perhaps a hidden "nest" somewhere that's all his own? One of my cats likes to be up in high places, where she can look down on the whole house. My other one likes to sleep in one of the 3 cat carriers I have hidden (with soft beds inside, and the doors open) in various dark nooks and crannies of the house.

Anyway, I don't think it's fair of your husband to say you have to get rid of him just because HE was bitten.

I think before doing something drastic like that, the fairest thing (both for you, and for your cat), would be a vet appointment to (1) check his health, and make sure he's not trying to tell you he doesn't feel well, and (2) get him neutered. He might still spray some, but I'll bet it cuts down on that, too.

If he's just biting you to try to get attention, you could try just getting up, walking away, and NOT giving him any attention whatsoever. Totally ignore him. Or, give him a time out in another room.

In my experience, I've found cats to be interesting because unlike dogs, whom we can train to please US, cats do the opposite. They train US to please THEM! Just knowing that often makes it very possible to train a cat. But first you have readjust your brain to think like a cat! (Much easier said than done!)

Agree with other poster, have him neutered to take some of the energy out of him - Cookie

Also, is there any chance your husband was fidgeting with his hands when the cat attacked? Maybe something moving that caught the kitty's eye and incited his pouncing and biting? I know sometimes I unconsciously move my fingers around playing with my wedding ring so maybe your husband was unconsciously moving his hand or fingers?

I did type an ER report on a gentleman whose cat had attacked him and bit him several times around the foot and ankle. I think it was a Maine coon cat and, on questioning, he said the cat did it quite frequently and he thought he was just playing rough. Of course, after a few rounds of IV antibiotics to get the subsequent infection under control, he might not have thought it was so cute, lol!

Good luck with the decision on the kitty.

I feel you need to weigh the risks and benefits. - KC

Is it just you and your husband? Or are there children or others involved who could get hurt by the cat? If it's just the two of you, and you feel like you're able to effectively stave off an attack when it happens, then the situation can probably be worked out. I also agree with the other posters who said to have him neutered and checked out by a vet. Good luck!

This same thing happened with my son's cat... - anon

the only thing different was that his cat was a female, and she WAS neutered. When she attacked, she was very vicious and could cause some major wounding to whomever was around her. It could be long intervals in between her attacks, but when she did, they were not provoked. she would just go spaz for some unknown reason. It is my guess, and this may be unsubstantiated, that when taking in a kitten/cat who is used to being outside constantly, that they do not "adjust" to being an indoor cat. They long to be back outdoors doing whatever it is that outdoor cats do. Sometimes this urge just overwhelms them and they attack anyone and everyone around them because they just simply "want to be free." That is just my observations and opinions, for whatever they are worth.

your husband is more important than a cat - no brainer

[ In Reply To ..]
!

Yeah, but he did not think SHE was more - important than the cat

[ In Reply To ..]
It's all well and good to blow it off when the cat attacks her, but now that the cat has nailed him, it's time for Fluffy to go. That's not right.

I'll reiterate what some of the other posters have said and get the cat to the vet ASAP. He needs a well cat checkup and he needs to be neutered. That will solve A LOT of the problem. Intact male cats are much, much more aggressive than sterilized cats are.

Don't let your husband bully you into either giving the cat away or taking him to the shelter. That's not solving the problem, that's just addressing one of the symptoms, and it's not fair to do to this cat that you have had now for a number of years.

Also, don't let your husband project onto the cat about the neutering. Sometimes human males feel a little too much empathy with an male animal who is going to get snipped and they fight it, but that doesn't do anyone any good.

We have cats - here's my suggestion - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I would take the cat in to get neutered. We got a female cat spaded after she had kittens. She was perfectly fine. We had a male kitten neutered and he turned into an absolute love bug after that. If I was in your situation this is what I would do. I would tell your husband the cat needs to be fixed. It doesn't matter about the age. There is a stray male cat outside that once I can cage him I will bring him in to be neutered. He is always getting into fights with other cats. That will help. If the neutering does not help calm the cat down, I would set up an outside area for him to sleep and eat and let him be an outside cat. He might just be happier being outside. This way you can have the cat there, but not inside so he won't attack you or your husband. The female and male outside cats now hang out on our lawn, wander around the neighborhood but come here for food and a warm chair to sleep on outside at hight

I think that's the best, reasonable solution - Trampled underfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
We had an attack cat (female) who was fixed, so I don't know that getting the cat neutered will help all that much. However, it will allow you to let him be an outside cat without being a menace to the neighborhood females and getting in constant fights.

It is people like your husband that make me so angry - sm

I could spit!! How dare he act like the cat is trash to be tossed at any time?? Would you do that to your child? No do not answer that. Obviously you all would!!

Thank you - Terri

Thank you for all your replies. My husband has pretty much given up on getting rid of the cat right now. I guess he'd rather deal with the cat than me lol. I'm going to see what the vet says, but so far, kitty is being his normal self. Since the windows are open in the room where they are, he probably smelled another cat outside and got upset.

Terri, if you get Animal Planet on cable/satellite - feral cat owner too

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a show called My Cat From Hell. This guy goes into homes of problem cats. Many are feral and he works wonders. Basically he makes the home cat-friendly and also encourages bonding via play with cat toys, laser pointers, etc.

I have 2 ferals. I fed them at my old apartment. They'd come in my house and I'd let them out when they wanted. When I moved I had to take them because they depended on me ;-) But when I moved I confined them indoors. One got kinda mean. You'd pet him and all of the sudden he'd lash out. He didn't want to be handled and would actually stalk my daughter when she came to visit (an adult, but still...)

Anyhow, we just started trying to wear him out playing with toys (especially the laser pointer). Then we'd pet/handle/love him and he's really come around. He's really a sweetie now. Sometimes he goes back to his old ways, but for the most part he's 99% fat house cat. He still stalks, but he just does it to keep us on our toes so we won't stop playing with him ;-)

Good luck!!! And do get him fixed. btw, mine had already been fixed by the people who go around and collect and fix ferals and then return them.
