Naghmeh Abedini came to my church on Monday night for a prayer service for her husband and other persecuted Christians around the world. Her husband, Saeed Abedini, who is an American pastor, has been imprisoned in Iran on some trumped-up charges, but he really has been locked up for his Christian faith. He has been there for just over 3 years now. However, it is doubtful the Iranian government has any intention of letting him leave once his 8-year sentence is up because they have told Naghmeh they will continue to press charges in order to increase the term of his sentence.
This woman's in-laws provide reports to her about the torture Saeed is forced to endure and about how he is routinely denied medical care. The prison officials often hold up pictures of his children to him and tell him that he can leave and be with them if he denounces Christ. He is a man of great faith, too.
Naghmeh is raising their 2 small children in Idaho, but she travels tirelessly to speak out about this injustice and to try to secure her husband's freedom. She has even addressed the UN and spoken directly to the Iranian Ayatollah as recently as last week. When the Ayatollah told her he did not know when her husband would be released, she replied, "He will be released when Jesus Christ says he will be released."
Though this is a very painful ordeal for her and her family, she says her faith is buoyed by the prayers of faithful Christians around the world. While in prison, Saeed has witnessed to many of the prisoners, and several of them have given their life to Jesus. God certainly works in all situations, even the most horrific. I pray that Saeed comes home to Naghmeh and his kids soon.
