Debunk #1: Ryan/GOP blocked passage of 6083 after it cleared - committee with bipartisan support

The "yay" Ryan vote cited in the article was on HR 6233 (Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act of 2012), a stop-gap "drought" measure. Only problem is that President Obama was referring to HR 6083 (Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2012), a much larger bill that Ryan want to decimate because of its Food Stamp content, which he is determined to slash and voucherize into a sharply reduced "block grant" arrangement. He and his party, tabled the measure before going on their extended 2-plu-mointjh summer "break" from doing absolutely nothing.

I read through the transcript of the president's speech and he doesn't state what he's referencing when he says "a farm bill." While it's true that HR 6083 is called the FARRM Bill, HR 6233 could also be considered "a farm bill."

HR 6083 has just passed committee and hasn't been voted on by Congress, so we don't know how Ryan will vote on it.

I would say that this one could go either way, depending on how one wants to spin it.

This is what the president said on August 13, 2012:

"He is one of the leaders of Congress standing in the way. So if you happen to see Congressman Ryan, tell him how important this farm bill is to Iowa"

Did Obama mention any vote here? No. What he said was, "standing in the way" as in blocking passage (through the House). Note the date of the Iowa speech. The HR 6233 stop-gap bill had been passed August 2, while at the same time, HR 6083 was staring them in the face, having just come out of committee Jul 11. With HR 6233's short-term kick-the-can-down-the-road measures in place, house republicans then proceeded to block further action on HR 6083. Why? Because a HUGE component of that bill contains Food Stamp provisions that Paul Ryan famously not only wants to slash, but he wants to promote permanent changes to the program that would curtail federal funding to the states over the long term.

So this begs the question: If 6233 passed before August 13 and HR 6083 was blocked at the same time that vote occurred, right before Congress left for its 2-plus-month summer "break," which farm bill do you suppose Obama meant when he said Ryan was "one of the leaders standing in the way."

Obama should be careful about talking about the automobile industry "roaring back." We lost $1.3B when Fiat assumed Chrysler's debt and the government still holds 500 million shares of GM, which is talking about claiming bankruptcy in 2013.

Speaking to outsourcing in general, from the Washington Post: "American jobs have been shifting to low-wage countries for years, and the trend has continued during Obama’s presidency. From 2008 to 2010, U.S. trade with China alone cost about 450,000 American jobs because of the growth of Chinese exports, said Robert E. Scott, a pro-labor advocate at the liberal Economic Policy Institute. That figure was less than in previous years, but the decrease was probably tied to the U.S. economic slowdown, which crimped demand for imports."

As to the Senate bill, I couldn't find anything that spoke to why Republicans blocked it. I only found articles that used the same quote cited above. They may have had legitimate reasons.

Republicans tried to put an amendment on the bill that would have repealed Obamacare (like that had anything to do with this bill). Because of that, Ried didn't put it up to a vote because it would have been voted down anyway with that amendment. Because he wouldn't allow the amendment, pubs refused to vote for it.

It's a 2-phase debunk: PResident Obama said, "Virtually every Senate Republican voted against the tax cut last week (re: Dec 2011)." First check the definition of the qualifier, "virtually." It means almost, or nearly. Then read the cited Examiner article and pay special attention to the reference to S. 1917 (Middle Class Tax Cut Act of 2011)...the actual bill to which Obama was referring. Only one republican, Susan Collins of Maine, voted for it, meaning the president's original statement is as accurate as can be.

That seems to be the bone of contention in the cited reference used to disprove the president's claim of proposals that Democrats and the GOP have supported in the past. History tells a different story:

Abraham Lincoln created the first federal income tax to finance the Civil War.

William Howard Taft endorsed the 16th Amendment, the federal progressive income tax, which became part of the Constitution at the end of his term in early 1913.

Herbert Hoover raised the top income tax rate from 24 to 63 percent in 1932, in the worst moments of the Great Depression.

Dwight D. Eisenhower argued for and succeeded in a top income tax rate over 90 percent during the 1950s, in order to help promote a balancing of the budget.

Richard Nixon raised the capital gains tax rate from 25 to 35 percent in 1969, and supported the concept of a minimum tax.

Gerald Ford signed legislation raising the minimum tax on the wealthy, and getting rid of some loopholes used by the wealthy to evade taxes.

Ronald Reagan supported the idea of capital gains being taxed as ordinary income, and raising taxes on corporations.

HW Bush signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 which raised fuel taxes with a 10% surtax on the top income tax bracket (resulting in a top marginal tax rate to 31%) plus new excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco products, automobiles and luxury yachts.

President Obama became aware of Mr. Baroz's story when he attended a jobs bill press conference and spoke to White House aides attending the event. He didn't seem to have a problem with the content of the president's message or his support for investment in education.

I certainly don't have the brain power to ferret out who did what when.

If you look at the graph cited, it's certainly places the responsibility on this administration, but where the debt came from is another story. I'll rely on the experts to figure that one out.
