Craig's list nightmare(s)

Posted: Feb 11, 2013

WOW, I never.  Put tickets on Craig's List for a Fleetwood Mac concert and cannot believe the things people expect.  Selling the tickets at face value not looking for any profit.

First guy wanted me to deliver them to his house in Chicago -- a 3 hour trip for me 1 way.  Did not happen.

Second person wanted to pay half of what I had them listeed for and pay for her gas to and from the concert.  WHAT????

Third person wanted the tickets.  I drove the 3 hours to Chicago and was to meet her at Ikea.  Waited for over an hour and she did not show up or bother to call my cell.  When I got home she had e-mailed me 3 times.  The first was at the time we were supposed to be meeting with some lame excuse.  Exchanged several e-mails with her telling her what I thought of her and her business practices.  This a.m. she sends me an e-mail that if they are not sold by April 1, she will buy them.  Not likely.  The price for her now just doubled at least if not tripled.  I  am also out 2 tanks of gas and tolls, and TIME.

SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST RUDE.  Hope Karma kicks kicks her in the butt.

She owns her own business and wondering how she would feel if a customer jerked her aound like that.

thanks for letting me vent.

Talking about Craiglists, let me share something - P

I had a listing for someone to clean my house. I like clean, don’t like to do. Anyway, person came last week and she had been contacted by a guy who wanted to know if she would clean in the nude! Said he was a nudist. She turned that one down. I do not sell on Craigs, have bought off there before but I always go to get the merchandise, never expect the one selling to bring to me. You can really run into strange folks on Craigs.

That stinks. Some ideas. sm - BobSegerFan

How far off is the concert date? If you have enough time, maybe try selling your tickets on stubhub? I've never used them, but know of a few people who have purchased tickets from them without problems. I believe they will take "hard" tickets or e-tickets, but not sure how soon you get paid for them. Or, if there is an official Fleewood Mac fan club, try joining and posting on their forums (if allowed) that you have tickets for sale. Good luck to you.

p.s. I don't think it is a good idea to go meet people interested in buying. Let them come to you, but not your house. Meet in a very public place in the daytime. Preferably, bring a friend with you or a dog if you have one

that stinks . . . - anony

Stubhub charges 15% and no promise of when you receive payment. No for that one.

I had my fiance and an off-duty cop with me when I was supposed to meet her, and we were in a public place.

Even tried posting in our 2 local papers with no luck.

Craig's List - LinK

I've never sold things on Craig's List, although I did try to sell a ticket to a Matchbox Twenty concert just a few weeks ago. I have bought from them and it was definitely smart to meet her in a public place with someone. Any way, my message was about using a ticket broker. I eventually sold my ticket through a ticket broker. Yes, they take 15%, but they sell the ticket for more than you paid for it. My $42.00 ticket sold for $78 so you may want to give it a try if you have time before the concert.

I've had the opposite luck with Craigslist, always good! - Have met a lot of nice people. (SM)

Still, when I was selling a bunch of furniture a few years ago (downsizing to a tiny apt.), I had a very nice, nearly-new Ikea bed and Sealy Posturepedic mattress. I was asking $150 for both, and throwing in queen-sized sheets to go with it, since they were too big for the twin-sized bed I was switching to. The price in the ad said "firm". This guy calls and wants to haggle. I said, "Sorry, the frame without the mattress is worth more than what I'm asking. The price is firm." He keeps on haggling. Offers me $75. I laugh. Then he proceeds to give me this lecture (he's being the Big Man - telling the dumb Little Woman how things are done on Craigslist.) I said no, sorry - my price stands. So he says, "Well, I can tell you right now, you're NEVER going to sell that bed if you aren't willing to give the buyer a deal." I said, "The price is already a deal." He then muttered something about how some people just never "get it", and hung up.

The very next call I got on the bed was a very nice couple, and when they came to look at it, even before I told them I was giving them the linens for it, too, they actually said, "This bed is worth more than $150." And wrote me a check for $185!

I would've given anything for the creep that had called me before and offered me $75 to have called back. If he had, it would've been SO satisfying to tell him I'd sold the bed for MORE than I was asking for it!

me too... very good experience on CL - nm

I sell all of my grandsons clothes on craigslist and I have always gotten what I ask for, and sometimes the people even pay me extra, saying the items are far better than I charge. I even get repeat buyers. I have also bought several items for my grandson on CL and had very good experiences also.

A couple times I had people do a no show, but that comes with the territory. I use the money I make to buy my grandson more clothes, so it is worth it. I certainly dont make enough as an MT anymore to buy clothes! :)

Me too, positive experiences so far - sm - XXX

I have bought though not sold as yet (about to try that though). But bought some Cargo furniture, got a great deal, yes I haggled, cannot hurt to try...got a Full bed/headboard (only needed a side piece was actually using it for parts), a chest of drawers, dresser and bunk board for $150 (was asking $200); also bought a really nice table loom, was asking $200, did not look good in the pics so got it down to $150, met the lady, it was in perfect condition and looked so much better in person (had been her moms and she just wanted to unload it and make a few dollars), so ended up with a great deal on that ($450+ new); wood burning stove got $100 knocked off their price so was $375, they had really bad pics up too, did some work on it before we picked up up though so ended up a lot nicer than we expected. We are very happy with everything we have bought and I have not had any issues with the items bought or the people we dealt with.

My great deals on Craigslist are endless! - When I lost my former apartment - s/msg

[ In Reply To ..]
after the rent was doubled overnight, all I could afford was a very tiny, almost-studio apartment. My former furniture had been big, and I needed to switch to small-sized furniture in a hurry.

I sold my full-sized futon sofa, and instead got a small armchair-sized futon that opens up into a single bed - for $75.

I sold a Dustbuster (I had 2) in the city, and then walked just a block down the street and picked up a butcher's block kitchen table/wine rack I'd found on Craigslist, without even having to move the car!

I now have a lawn to mow, and hate noisy gas or electric mowers, so I found a trusty old manual push reel mower on CL - for $10.

I got a beautiful, new Persian-looking rug for the living room from a home-stager who had advertized it on CL. The home he'd staged had sold, and he no longer had any use for the furniture he'd bought. Got that gorgeous rug (11' by 8') for only $40.

When my bike got stolen, I bought a great replacement bike on CL for $120. (I also checked the serial number to be sure it wasn't stolen, itself. It wasn't.)

My new bedroom is tiny. I needed it to be both an office and a bedroom. So I sold my former big bed on CL, and in order to keep my big desk for work (the only big piece of furniture I kept), I bought an awesome, heavy, wood-frame loft bed from a just-graduated college student, for only $50.

I wanted a very small loveseat-sofa for the living room, and got a lovely, almost-new, Victorian-looking sofa off CL for FREE!

I needed a bench seat for my kitchen table, and found a darling one - brand-new, made by a woman who makes them - one at a time - by hand, and sells them on CL. Only $40! She also happened to sell beautiful potted succulent plant collections, so when I went to pick up the bench, I also ended up bringing home a few of her potted plants for my front doorstep, as well.

When I was moving (before my bike got stolen!), I had 2 bikes, and didn't need the other one. (At least not then, anyway!) I sold it for $60 to a guy who needed a "guest bike" for friends and relatives when they were visiting.

I also had a lot of things I was giving away for free because I just didn't need them anymore, and didn't have anywhere to store them. I donated a lot of horse equipment I no longer needed (couldn't afford a horse anymore) to a riding school, and some other stuff to a young rider who didn't have much money, herself). I had just bought a new desktop computer, and gave my old one away for free to a mom (also with no money!) who wanted a starter computer for her 5-year-old son. (He was thrilled!)

I even found my amazing little apartment on CL!

It's also a great place to find listings for garage sales, or for free items that are being left out on someone's curb.

Of course, there ARE scammers out there, but if you're reasonably careful, for the most part, I don't see much problem with CL. You avoid certain neighborhoods, or ads that sound "too good to be true", and learn to do a lot of judging of character by the phone conversation. I wouldn't buy something really big, like a car, on CL, or anything that cost a lot of money, because I wouldn't want to be going to meet a stranger carrying a lot of cash. But I think that's what CL is for, anyway, just finding someone else who wants your old junk, for cheap. Or for finding old junk you need, for cheap.

Craigslist: EPIC FAIL. - anti-Craigslister.

[ In Reply To ..]
The experiences I've had with Craigslist have been so incredibly bad that I will never visit that site again. Time and time again, I gave them another chance, whether looking for an apartment, a job...

And I always, ALWAYS ended up with some a-hole emailing me, asking for my bank account number, asking for personal information, asking me to wire him money in another country...

I do not have time to sort through all the BS to get what I need, and that is why Craigslist is an EPIC FAIL.
