How Convenient! IRS loses emails.

Posted: Jun 13, 2014

Sure is a shame, isn't it?  Who's responsble for this? Check out the period of the lost emails. Something's definitely fishy. Computer crash???? Don't think so. Even then, isn't there ways you can get stuff off a hard drive after a crash? Let's get NSA on it. They might have copies.

WHAT A CORRUPT GOVERNMENT. I hope Congress does something about this. No way should the taxpayers have to put up with such a corrupt organization.  Shall we taxpayers have computer crashes so we can't pay our taxes or would it look suspicious for over 300 million people to have computer crashes?  I'm totally disgusted now.

Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) issued the following statement regarding the Internal Revenue Service informing the Committee that they have lost Lois Lerner emails from a period of January 2009 – April 2011.  Due to a supposed computer crash, the agency only has Lerner emails to and from other IRS employees during this time frame.  The IRS claims it cannot produce emails written only to or from Lerner and outside agencies or groups, such as the White House, Treasury, Department of Justice, FEC, or Democrat offices.

“The fact that I am just learning about this, over a year into the investigation, is completely unacceptable and now calls into question the credibility of the IRS’s response to Congressional inquiries.  There needs to be an immediate investigation and forensic audit by Department of Justice as well as the Inspector General.

“Just a short time ago, Commissioner Koskinen promised to produce all Lerner documents.  It appears now that was an empty promise.  Frankly, these are the critical years of the targeting of conservative groups that could explain who knew what when, and what, if any, coordination there was between agencies.  Instead, because of this loss of documents, we are conveniently left to believe that Lois Lerner acted alone.  This failure of the IRS requires the White House, which promised to get to the bottom of this, to do an Administration-wide search and production of any emails to or from Lois Lerner.  The Administration has repeatedly referred us back to the IRS for production of materials.  It is clear that is wholly insufficient when it comes to determining the full scope of the violation of taxpayer rights.”

Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Charles Boustany Jr., M.D. (R-LA) added, "In the course of the Committee's investigation, the Administration repeatedly claimed we were getting access to all relevant IRS documents. Only now - thirteen months into the investigation - the IRS reveals that key emails from the time of the targeting have been lost.  And they bury that fact deep in an unrelated letter on a Friday afternoon.  In that same letter, they urge Congress to end the investigations into IRS wrongdoing. This is not the transparency promised to the American people.  If there is no smidgeon of corruption what is the Administration hiding?"

"Didn't the Nixon tapes disappear too? Only he had to resign. No such luck with this scumbag."

There was an 18 min 20 sec missing section from one of the thousands and thousands of hours of tapes recorded by the Nixon administration, of which 2,636 hours of tapes are now available to the public.

Not only did the tapes NOT disappear (with the exception of that 18 min 20 second gap), the conversation contained on the June 23, 1972, recording has Nixon agreeing that officials in his administration should approach the CIA Director, Richard Helms, and Deputy Director, Vernon Walters, and ask them to request the Acting Director of the FBI, L. Patrick Gray, halt the FBI's investigation into the break in at the Watergate on grounds that it was a national security issue. Directing the CIA to have the FBI stop a criminal investigation? That's Nixon obstructing justice. Nixon was facing assured impeachment, in addition to criminal charges and likely removal from office so resigned from office. Gerald Ford became the first POTUS that was never elected as either VP or POTUS and then pardoned Nixon for his crimes.

The "scumbag" you don't like hasn't broken the law (nor has Hillary Clinton for that matter), but that won't stop the scared people from trying to prove they did and keeping up the stupid chatter. Pay no attention to the echo chamber coming from the right wing Sarah Palin revisionist history party of made up scandals and stuff; they'll just get you all misinformed, confused, and scared.... exactly the way they want you.

That's what people who backed - Nixon said

[ In Reply To ..]
before the tapes were discovered. "He didn't break the law" and "There's no proof." It took an investigation and several years before the truth came out.

And I don't think this warrants the "Pay no attention" line because the more we just let the government get away with, the more they're going to continue to step over the line without consequence - take your pick of president or party (They're all going to say "The last administration did it!")
Watergate break ins and buggings were real crimes. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic party national headquarters in June 1972 at the Watergate complex. On interrogation, it was learned it was the second break in, as the complex was burgled and bugged also in May 1972 without anyone being apprehended or arrested for the crime. In addition to that, it was discovered there were also two failed attempts to break in. Woodward and Bernstein (the lamestream media) were assigned to the story the day the 5 men were arrested in June and subsequently discovered the criminal activity went all the way to the top (with the help of "Deep Throat," later revealed to be Mark Felt, Assistant Director of the FBI). The Democratic party national headquarters offices were bugged and monitored illegally by the Republicans. These were real crimes that were perpetrated and connected to the White House, not just hot air and conjecture and investigations into non crimes and endless political 3-ring circus.

You said: "It took an investigation and several years before the truth came out."

No actually, the multiple counts of crimes were committed, people were arrested in the act of committing the crimes, and then the truth came out fairly quickly through the media, specifically the Pulitzer Prize winning reporting of Woodward and Bernstein. It was the coverup by the guilty parties involved that made it drag out so long.

"For several months following the break-in, Woodward and Bernstein repeatedly wrote front page stories exposing links between the burglary and Nixon's campaign organization, the Committee for the Reelection of the President (CRP). Despite mounting evidence, they were unable to connect the burglars directly to Nixon or his staff until an October 10, 1972 story in which they disclosed in detail that the Watergate break-in was part of a larger effort to sabotage Nixon's political opponents--paid for through the CRP under the direction of some of Nixon's closest aides." (see link)

So if anyone has any real evidence of any real crime committed by President Obama, his administration, or Hillary Clinton (versus just you not liking them for their perceived political or religious views), you should come forward and alert the media immediately. Until that time, it's all just the same old stuff, different day, business as usual, and more propaganda and endless baseless chatter from the right-wing media echo chamber.
It took 2 years of investigation until NIxon resigned - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
It started in Sept. 1971 and they arrested 5 guys fairly quickly (June 1972), but the investigation was only started in May 1973 and was in full swing until the day Nixon resigned (August 1974). The truth DID take a long time to come out.

This is what happens with government investigations. They all take a long time to complete because they want to dot their 'i's" and cross their "t's" and turn over every bit of proof that may be hiding 'under a rock.'

So, be patient with the investigations going on now. It will take time.

Now that the IRS conveniently lost the emails from Lerner to "everyone else" (my quotes), they may be able to reconstructed if any government agency still has high regards for this country and follows the oath they took without being party partisans, like what has been happening with the investigations at hand.
Feel free to rewrite history to fit the narrative? Sounds familiar. - sm

Watergate started when the guys were arrested for committing a crime in June 1972 at the Watergate office complex. Up until that day, the word "Watergate" did not have the meaning it does today, it was just some office complex. The truth of how deep it went came out fairly quickly in October 1972 about 3-1/2 months after the break in at the Watergate and crimes committed in June 1972. History has shown that the FBI ratted out the criminals through the media.

The "investigation" I believe you refer to was the Senate Watergate Committee began May 1973, but keep in mind that there were actually depositions, trial investigations, etc., for crimes actually committed and additional criminal activities being uncovered in the process of the trials. In September 1972, Hunt, Liddy and the 5 Watergate burglars caught in the act were indicted by a federal grand jury for multiple counts of crime. The Pentagon Papers and all the other wrongdoings these CREEPs (committee to reelect the president) committed were then discovered through actual criminal investigations for trials, which investigations probably never take place if these CREEPs don't get caught in the act at the Watergate. Around 40 people are convicted of crimes and sent to jail over Watergate, some of them convicted merely for the cover up of the actual crimes in order to protect Nixon and his administration. (see link) If the CREEPs don't get caught, no one is the wiser, and who knows how history plays out?

The fact that the trial testimony, depositions, investigations, and Senate committees eventually uncovered more break ins and crimes does not change the fact that the Watergate "scandal" started when the guys got caught committing the crime at the office complex.

Best "for instance" I can think of is that the destruction of the twin towers started on 9/11 when the crimes were committed and 3000+ lives were lost in NYC, Shanksville, PA, and DC at the Pentagon and NOT the day the investigation determined the guys had committed several other various assorted crimes before the actual event.

Watergate started at the Watergate, and 9/11 started on 9/11. If the crimes aren't committed, then there's no reason to find out how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Portions were erased, but there was plenty of evidence including potential testimony from the person he was having a conversation with the erased portion, that would have led to impeachment. He knew that. That is why he resigned. If he was innocent and could prove same, he would not have done so.

I am astounded by the lack of historical knowledge here... not possible to just throw things out here and expect people to believe it... only the right wing entertainment machine gets away with that since the listeners relish lies if that's what they want to hear and of course anything obamahate.

...didn't learn about Watergate other than watching the "All the President's Men" movie. Heck, we barely covered the Viet Nam War. It was so recent that it wasn't even in our older history books.

On a similar note, on last night's Jeopardy show, the Final Jeopardy question was something about a gentleman who, upon leaving his post in 1979, was the last ambassador to this country. My husband and I, both 42, immediately said "Iran"...because 1979 was all about Iran. None of the three contestants got it correct. All three appeared to be 5-10 years younger than us. So while we were thinking "how could they NOT know that?!?"...it was probably just recent enough that it wasn't covered in their history classes but they were too young to have been able to remember it (or were born just after it).

The OP said the tapes disappeared. No tapes disappeared. A portion of the tapes (18.5 minutes to be exact) was erased. This is easily searchable.

What is your point?
The experts now think Nixon and Haig erased those 18-1/2 minutes. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The tapes didn't disappear; only 1 tape had an 18-1/2 minute gap that was erased, but as the other poster already said, there were thousands and thousands of hours of tapes that were enough to implicate President Nixon. The recordings are available for the pubic to listen to.

When Nixon's testimony to the grand jury was released recently and the experts reviewed it, they now believe it was 18-1/2 minutes discussing the Watergate break-ins and arrests that had occurred 3 days earlier and how they would cover it up [Haldeman's notes were also destroyed for that portion of the meeting]. The evidence destroyed directly implicated Nixon so they believe Nixon and Alexander Haig erased it some time in July 1973 when it was requested by subpoena. Haig was Haldeman's replacement when Dean's testimony implicated White House involvement, and Nixon fired Dean and requested Haldeman's and Ehrlichman's resignations (can you say fall guys?).

It was 18-1/2 minutes of tape recorded 3 days after the Watergate break-ins and arrests that would have easily implicated Nixon's involvement so it was erased, but there were other tapes that implicated Nixon anyway. It was all just part of the coverup.

IRS lost Lois Lerner's emails in tea party probe - ProMT

[ In Reply To ..]
CBS NEWS: June 13, 2014: "Isn't it convenient for the Obama Administration that the IRS now says it has suddenly realized it lost Lois Lerner's emails requested by Congress and promised by Commissioner John Koskinen?" Issa asked in an email statement. "Do they really expect the American people to believe that, after having withheld these emails for a year, they're just now realizing the most critical time period is missing?

"If there wasn't nefarious conduct that went much higher than Lois Lerner in the IRS targeting scandal, why are they playing these games?"

If the IRS is this incompetent and negligent, how many of you really trust them to oversee your healthcare? I guess the recent VA scandal/crisis is a good indication of how inept they really are.

I was a soldier. I have government run health care and have had for decades. I know the difference between what I have and exchanges of free-market health care modeled after the Massachusetts Republican model and Heritage Foundation ideas. The dirty little secret is that the ACA plan is the conservatives idea for health care, and the politicians know that.

They've now gone and oversold the idea that it's a "government takeover," and since it's not going anywhere and they know that now, they could at least stop the misinformation, especially since their health care plan is so similar but just passes more costs to consumers versus employers.

How could they repeal ACA now and keep a straight face while selling their own similar plan? They really can't, actually, and that is the real insanity.
