"I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car.  I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage.  If I help him, he's going to help me."  Peggy Joseph, Chicagoite, on the election of Obama.

Ken Rogulski reporting on WJR in Michigan, October 2009.

ROGULSKI: Why are you here?

WOMAN #1: To get some money.

ROGULSKI: What kind of money?

WOMAN #1: Obama money.

ROGULSKI: Where's it coming from?

WOMAN #1: Obama.

ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get it?

WOMAN #1: I don't know, his stash. I don't know. (laughter) I don't know where he got it from, but he givin' it to us, to help us.

WOMAN #2: And we love him.

WOMAN #1: We love him. That's why we voted for him!

WOMEN: (chanting) Obama! Obama! Obama! (laughing)

September 2, 2012 - US BLS

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (8.9 percent), adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (25.4 percent), whites (8.0 percent), blacks (16.7 percent), and Hispanics (11.3 percent) showed little or no change in August. The jobless rate for Asians was 7.1 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

According to BLS, the black unemployment rate hasn't been this high since 1984.

Another robotic attempt to redirect any criticism of the CURRENT administration to a bashing of the tea party. Talk about a one-track mind.

MY point was the faith that the black community had in THIS president has been misplaced. Black unemployment is the highest it's been in over 25 years, and to the best of my knowledge Obama isn't handing out money from his "stash" or paying peoples' mortgages and putting gas in their cars.

If this country is mindless enough to put him back into power for another 4 years, it deserves everything it gets...including high unemployment and inflation.
If this country is mindless enough to go back - to the Bush years-not sm

If this country is mindless enough to return to total Republican control for another 4 years, it deserves everything it gets...including high unemployment and inflation, deregulation of bankers, environmental protections, etc., etc., etc.

Obviously you are insinuating black people are mindless, while there is plenty of evidence that WASPs need plenty of education as well.
Mindless? - oldie
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think the person was saying all black people are mindless. After all it was not only the black vote that put Mr. Obama in charge. A lot of people were tired of Mr. Bush and would have voted against ANY GOP and for ANY DEM just to get the change.

unfortunately, as an African-American who works with my husband says, "I'm still waiting for my quarter." (that is as in "change").

I don't think you can classify any one segment of society as mindless or voting in lock-step no matter what your ideology is, do you?
I certainly didn't mean black people were mindless...sheesh! - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
The majority of black voters voted for Obama. There was a strong belief that he was going to make their lot in life better along with improving the well-being of the entire nation. THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED! Employment-wise, blacks have a higher level of unemployment than any other racial group and this number has risen drastically since the year 2000, when black unemployment was about 5%.

I could point out other groups that should feel disappointed.

How about the Hispanics who thought that Obama was going to overhaul the immigration system in this country?

How about unions, who were given this promise by Obama?

"And understand this: If American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain when I’m in the White House, I’ll put on a put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself. I’ll walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States.”

I live in Wisconsin, where a large and long in duration protest by unions took place, and I don't remember any footage of Obama marching around the capital in Madison. Al Sharpton came, and I think Jesse Jackson came, the head of the AFL-CIO came, but not Obama.

Obama was adopted by the Crow Nation during his campaign years. On September 3, 2011, the Crow Nation announced that it was going to lay off nearly 25% of its work force. You'd think their adopted "son" could find some way to save a few of those jobs, given the resources he has available.

As an Obama supporter said at a town hall meeting last fall.

"I'm one of your middle class Americans. And quite frankly, I'm exhausted. Exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for," a woman told President Obama at a town hall.

"My husband and I have joked for years that we thought we were well beyond the hot dogs and beans era of our lives, but, quite frankly, it's starting to knock on our door and ring true that that might be where we're headed again, and, quite frankly, Mr. President, I need you to answer this honestly. Is this my new reality?"

If you doubt me, watch the video. If the fact it is posted on Real Clear Politics disturbs you, be aware that it is a clip from a CNBC forum. The woman in question soon after got laid off from her job.

"I'm one of your middle class Americans. And quite frankly, I'm exhausted. Exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for," a woman told President Obama at a town hall.

If she's exhausted from defending him, why do you persist?

How about filibuster, cloture, supermajority and other such hissies? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Do you really think Obama has the power or the right to override all the obstruction?

Mathematically, "since 2000" would imply the majority of that downward trend in black unemployment occurred before Obama took office. Immigrants who pay attention to politics might just realize jobs and the economy trump any possibility of favorable outcomes in immigration reform initiatives. Obama has made some efforts in that direction that have been thwarted by the hissies thus far, and recently did what he could within the limited executive capacities afforded him by the Constitution. Union members and leaders have not been asleep at the wheel during the Koch brothers' drive to decimate the gains they have made over the decades. They too probably realize that Obama has little to no control over state legislation and certainly know which party aligns with their interests.

For those of us who "persist," the issue is not one of defending Obama. The persistence is fueled by the painfully recent memory and nightmare of destructive GOP policies and the devastation of their aftermath we live on a minute-by-minute basis, compounded by the fact that the GOP has shifted so far to the right that even many among its own ranks cannot recognize themselves anymore. We have no immediate plans of going quietly into the night and surrendering the country and our children's futures to plutocrats, corporate giants and their corporations-are-people-too mindsets, war mongers (their latest being waged against the middle class), social engineers, regressionists, antiscientists, historical revisionists, theocrats and other such highly destructive and undesirable forces.

Your speaking for an entire race of people - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
is just as inappropriate as anyone who would presume to speak for your entire tribe. Historically, blacks and other minorities have always born their inordinate share of high unemployment regardless of who is at the helm when it occurs. The systemic factors that result in this disproportionality have been around for centuries and arise out of persistent partisan efforts to marginalize rather than include minorities in the American dream. Blacks are the ones who have lived this reality over the ages, perhaps more than any other population, and need no help determining whom they can and cannot trust.

Americans who have even the slightest awareness of who does and does not protect and defend minority interests are much better equipped to assign responsibility for their dilemma than those who incessantly and predictably try to lay it at Obama's feet. Way too simplistic to be taken seriously. As for the overall employment situation for all Americans, and blacks in particular, I find it interesting that, when it suits them, Obama's GOP/TP detractors have no problem blaming him for high unemployment numbers, yet in the same breath, when arguing preservation of business-friendly tax policies, never fail to insist that those same policy beneficiaries are the REAL job creators. Wanna talk about misplaced trust? The past decade of tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulation, lax environmental policies and all the other nonsensical policy replays the GOP is preparing to resurrect from the Bush era (not to mention their utter gall to label these failed initiatives as a "JOBS program"...yeah, right), has provided more than enough proof that NO MATTER HOW MANY CONCESSIONS are given to big business, they CANNOT BE TRUSTED to transform their record-breaking profits, shareholders earnings, zero tax liabilities, favored status, etc, into viable middle class jobs. Instead, what we can rely on them to do is to lay off, close up shop, offshore, outsource, sell our country out right from under us and constantly demand more, more, more. Enough is enough.
You're beyond hope...and I won't waste any more time trying to educate you. - hmmm

But keep in mind that Obama had a Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate for about 2 years of his term.
I'm not speaking for an entire race of people. - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
I think I've effectively given examples of blacks speaking for themselves.

Pay attention.

And if you think the Democrats aren't in bed with big business, you're asleep at the wheel.

"Obama has split the proceeds of his fundraising this year with the national party. Donors typically pay as much as $35,800 each at the joint events, with $5,000 going to the president's campaign and the remaining amount going to the Democratic National Committee. At that pricetag, donors 'don't want to meet someone who works at the White House,' Corrado said. 'They want to see the president.'"

Must be a lot of poor people pooling their money together to get some rubber chicken at those meals...

I think blacks who have lived through generations and generations of partisan inclusion by one side and exclusion by the other are much better equipped to judge whom they can and cannot trust than some knee-jerk Obama hater. I also think they have the intelligence and saavy to figure out who and what is responsible for the current state of the economy and which jobs programs are likely to most favorably impact their plight of disproportionate unemployment.
Maybe then.... - just saying
