Breaking out in a sweat

Posted: Aug 25, 2016

I had a hysterectomy about 6 years ago, but still have my ovaries.  I used to wake up drenched in sweat and sweat profusely throughout the day.  I could always tell when a hot flash was coming on, it would start with my neck getting red and then just flush my entire face before the sweating started.  Now that does not happen every day anymore.  Now I find myself just breaking out in a sweat for no reason, i.e. sitting typing, driving, or watching TV.  Does this mean my menopause is diminishing or should I be concerned.  At night, it is still covers on, covers off, covers on, covers off.  THanks.

Stress - Nicky

[ In Reply To ..]
I am 63 and started through menopause at 52. My hot flashes were more like warm spells in which I knew they were happening but no one else could tell. I took black cohash for a few months which helped, but then seemed to make them worse. I have been told that menopause symptoms can last 6-10 years. The one thing I find which causes these "power surges" to still occur is stress. Good stress, bad stress, being overly tired, transcribing until I am exhausted, etc. Even watching the news makes me warm. I have learned to just try to relax (prayer and/or meditation) or if I am too tired to give it up for the day. Once we all go through menopause, it seems that heat is our worst enemy. I keep our bedroom in the 50s during the winter, much to my husband's regret! LOL! I still sleep under 2 blankets, but do not like a warm bedroom! Thank goodness for winter, I would die down south where it is always warm. Not for me, or for my collie! LOL My mom at 88 is now cold all the time. Guess there are some good things about growing older. Hope it helps to know you are not alone.

Thanks - sm

It does, and thanks. I thought I was experiencing some really horrible side effect or ???? I guess in our biz, sometimes knowledge can be dangerous. Thanks again.

Get some labs, have all your hormone levels checked, FDH, progesterone, testosterone, everything. Try to find a doctor who is receptive (fat chance) to bioidentical HRT, who doesn't charge $300 per appointment (fat chance). Try to stay away from plain estradiol, especially without progesterone. Research, read and learn. I feel your pain.

Thanks for the info and tips! -nm- - Not OP but still grateful

Hot flashes can persist for a number of years past menopause in some women. OTOH, - sm

hyperthyroidism can also make you sweat more than usual, and thyroid problems become more common as women age. You might check out the symptoms of hyperthyroidism and then see your doctor for testing if you think you have other reasons to suspect that.

Blood work - OP

I had over 1000 dollars in blood work not too long ago, and the only thing abnormal was fatty liver, and no I don't drink (thanks doc, thought you would know that after 22 years). So that's about it TSH was perfect. Thanks

Well, you are probably okay on the thyroid then. - Although my TSH was "normal" too.

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately, TSH isn't the be-all and end-all when it comes to thyroid function. It's just all they usually check (and frequently using the old, outdated normals).

since menopause/hysty, I have put on about, well lets say, too many pounds. Maybe I will have them check further into thyroid. Thanks
Yes, that happend to me as well, but it was my thyroid getting really seriously low. - sm

When I started dragging in my late 30s, a doc told me to take a vacation and Prozac. In my late 40s, as I got worse, it was take Cymbalta, sleeping pills, and pain killers. In my late 50s, it was all you need is HRT. I declined all the heavy-duty med recommendations because they made no sense to me. Finally, not only my hair, but my eyebrows were falling out, I'd gained 25 more pounds in just a couple of years, my muscles ached for a couple of days if I walked more than a mile, and I was needing a nap every few hours. I'd thought it was my thyroid since my 30s, and all my symptoms were classic, just not my TSH.

NDT was like a bloody miracle--a month on that, and I'd already dropped 20 pounds of what turned out to be myxedema, not fat, without cutting a single calorie from my diet, woke up in the morning ready to go, had hair reappearing again all over me, and was back to walking several miles a day.

Thirty years of misery for lack of 15 cents a day of medication, all because most doctors are idiots who only look at one lab test for thyroid and never really look at the patient at all any more. (And now if I have to see a doctor, it's an argument about putting me on levothyroxine instead of NDT. Apparently, no one ever tells them don't mess with success in medical school.)

If you think it might be thyroid, educate yourself at the website in the link below before wasting money on another doctor visit:
I can't wait to buy it - sm

What brand do you recommend and what dosage do you take? This has me excited to go out and buy. THANKS SO MUCH!
I don't recommend anything unless/until you are sure - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
you actually have low thyroid. And the dosage for one person is NOT the dosage for another--you have to dose by your clinical symptoms and the results of a full thyroid panel (just TSH is nowhere near enough to see what's going on). My dose has nothing to do with what your dose should be if you do, indeed, have low thyroid. The correct dose for you is the dose that makes YOU euthyroid.

I do recommend NDT, which replaces everything the thyroid produces, not just T4. You will have to look hard for a doc who will go along with that, though, because the drug reps for synthetic T4/levothyroxine have done their job well over the last 75 years.

As far as brand recommendations, you will find complete information and patient evaluations of the various options out there on the site I linked to above as well as a great deal of other information you should understand. I prefer dosing twice a day with a simple version of NDT without a coating or lots of additives, etc. that I order cheaply from overseas. YMMV.

Is the test expensive, I have no insurance. Thanks for all your help though.
You need a panel, not a single test. - sm

Please read through the info on the site I posted the link to. It will take a while, but you should find answers there to any and all questions you might have.

Unless you live in NY, which won't allow their use, you should be able to find much less expensive lab test services online. Do your research on the companies available, of course.

You shouldn't just randomly experiment with taking thyroid hormone any more than you should randomly experiment with injecting insulin. It's not some kind of magic bullet for weight gain or feeling tired. However, thyroid problems are still often not correctly diagnosed, so it's something to consider more extensive testing for IF you find you fit the clinical profile of hypothyroidism--or hyper. That means if you have a number of the possible symptoms, not just 1 or 2 of the things mentioned.
