After record breaking profits, health insurers

Posted: Feb 12, 2010

Profits for five largest health insurers were up 56% in 2009. Let's hear a big round of applause for status quo. Just say no to health care reform and claim a sweeping partisan victory. What I want to know is how the obstructionists and their supporters sleep at night. http://blog.healthcareforamericanow.org/2010/02/11/insurers-enjoy-record-breaking-profits-as-they-cut-27-million-people-from-their-rolls/ ;

The republicans don't want to fix what isn't broken, they say. As long as companies are rolling in the dough, things are going right! All the way up to the point where ordinary people are out of money to give those companies. Then, the republicans get sad. But as long as they can squeeze some out of the ordinary people, hey! things look great!

How can they deny its broken? - emperor has no clothes!

What drives me crazy is - aren't the high costs of insurance and health care affecting them too? How can they not see its out of control - don't they ever see a doctor or fill a prescription? Don't they ever get a claim denied or their coverage dropped? How can they pretend that voting for corporate profits will NOT affect them adversely?

Congress has a terrific insurance plan - nm - NJ

I know several who are adamantly against any sort of healthcare reform - they are all drawing social security and are undergoing all kinds of hardships because they can't afford doctor visits, copays, medications, certain "unnecessary" procedures - yet are deliberately blind to cause and effect, it seems!

No problem sleeping at night - sm

The mess of a healthcare bill that came out of the Democrats' smokey back rooms, porked to the hilt with special deals and outright bribery, is a moral abomination and an insult to the intelligence of anyone who really does want REAL healthcare reform without government taking over the industry.

The truth is, we have an excellent healthcare system in this country but it has some serious gaps and flaws. We never did need to REFORM healthcare - and that word should have been challenged right from the git because it implies that we need to tear everything down and cook up some new system.

What we need is not to REFORM healthcare, but to IMPROVE it. And the minute you realize the distinctions that are implied when you substitute IMPROVEMENT for REFORM you begin to see that the way forward is NOT to dismantle our current system, but to address the SPECIFIC problems that we all acknowledge exist.

In other words, it's foolish to throw out the baby with the bath water, or to fix things that AREN'T broken about our healthcare system.

Sleep at night? I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I thought we were going to roll over for the junkyard of a healthcare bill that the inept Obama administration has presided over. It's a total mess, and what's more, you KNOW it's a mess just like a lot of other Democrats know it...which is why it hasn't been able to make it to first base.

True. But when will we ever come together on it? - nekkid emperor

Until both parties can agree where the problem lies, it will be a stalemate until we are all bankrupt. Is it possible for both parties to sit down and identify what is broken and what is not? Because until that day, big business will be killing us, literally, in the name of profits. Insurance lobbyists have bribed both sides to turn a blind eye. That is the #1 thing that is broken. Until we get past the bribes and purchased votes, there is no hope.

There are lobbyists on all sides of this issue - Washington itself is THE problem

...not only with healthcare but most other issues as well.

It's not healthcare that's broken; it's our government.

No city in the world can rival Washington for its population of double-dealing scalawags, sly manipulators and garden-variety crooks. I'm quite sure that if we REALLY knew how things are done in Washington - how deals are really made, who the real "power brokers" are (some of whom probably aren't even Americans), or what payoffs, kickbacks, bribes, lies, and who knows what other assorted frauds and crimes are perpetrated on the American people - not only by our elected representatives but the people who occupy most of the OTHER office space in Washington - we would clean that cesspool out from top to bottom.

Or would we? We seem to put up with these bad actors just as long as they remember to slip US a little bit of the vigorish, don't we? As long as the pigs at the trough leave a little for US, it's all good.

Come to think of it, maybe Washington isn't the problem. Maybe Washington really isn't any better or any worse than we are.

Health Insurers Secretly Funded $10-$20 Million In Attack AdsJan 14, 2010
By John ByrneWednesday, January 13th, 2010 -- 9:09 am Seen one of those TV ads attacking healthcare reform? Chances are, it may have been paid for by a health insurance company funneling money through the US Chamber of Commerce -- who then funneled it to one of two front groups it created specifically aimed at derailing or watering down the Democrats' healthcare reform bill. According to National Journal veteran investigative correspondent Peter Stone, some $10 to $20 million of health i ...

By John ByrneFriday, February 12th, 2010 -- 9:45 am If no health care overhaul passes Congress, health insurers may be in for a windfall -- and one far larger that most Americans probably realize. According to a study by a pro-health reform group published Thursday, the nation's largest five health insurance companies posted a 56 percent gain in 2009 profits over 2008. The insurers including Wellpoint, UnitedHealth, Cigna, Aetna and Humana, which cover the majority of Americans with insur ...

Health Insurers' Fast Food Holdings Raise FlagApr 16, 2010
(CBS)  The investments of large insurers of health, disability and long term care in fast food chains like McDonald's and Pizza Hut have raised the interest of a study in the American Journal of Public Health, reports CBS Radio News' John Hartge. The Harvard Medical School's Dr. Wesley Boyd, an author of the study, finds it ironic that these firms would invest nearly $2 billion in companies that sell food often linked to obesity and cardiovascular disease. This is why we need a public option. At that point the high deductible policy was a new choice which luckily was not costing too much less than the other more comprehensive one. Now there would be few who could pay the premiums fo ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

Big Banks Profits/bonuses DownJan 18, 2012
