Which lie? That job of Congress is to pass a budget - or pay the bills?

That all essential federal personnel will get IOUs instead of paychecks? That business owners would see delays in raising capital? Infrastructure permits and Hurricane Sandy restoration would come to a screeching halt? VA support services will be shuttered? Community economies, small businesses earnings, employee and vendor livelihoods, etc who depend on national parks and monument tourism are out of luck and can go fly a kite? That a shut down could directly affect 2 million civilian workers and 1.4 million in the military nationwide? That some of them will be furloughed indefinitely without pay while their bills will not take a holiday? That OC roll-out will commence uninterrupted? That voters don't approve of paying ransoms just to get their reps to do their jobs?

Before answering this multiple choice question ("which lie would that be?") keep in mind we've all been here and done this before, thanks to past GOP tantrums ala Newt Gingrich 17 years ago.

Looks like the prez struck a nerve simply by being the only adult in the room. All he did was get up there and do his job while the kiddies in the House play in their sand box and bully each other, but he sure did make them look like the doh-dohs they are just by showing up and making sense.

Oh, BTW, the he didn't talk too much about the effect on food programs. FDA activities such as inspections, recalls, investigations, and preventing people from buying products that could kill them will be "curtailed." Pregnant women and hungry children SNAP applicants will be SOL. He didn't mention how I will be directly affected. I've been waiting and waiting all year for October 1, my target day to sign up for Medicare and visit SS to see how many more days I have to claw my way through to get to full retirement benefit. Not happening. Thanks, Ted et al.

first day he took office in his first "election." That is nothing new to me, at all. What struck me as lies was that his "doctrines" would basically save America. Lies!! His doctrines have done nothing but bring America down. I am not necessarily for a govt shut down, but it is a way to get some people riled up enough to get a backbone and fight what does not work. If they hold some people's security hostage, so be it! The majority of us have been held hostage by his enforcement of what he deems to be a saving grace. HA! he has done more to injure this country than anybody else in history, including Clinton, and Clinton is not far behind. The corruption just gets on my last nerve, and him supporting that makes it even worse. This so-called govt is no longer for the PEOPLE, and the PEOPLE need to take it back... if shutting it down brings it to that... more power to that. We have lived without decent paychecks for the past six years, let them experience what it is like once. Oh... they cannot make their house payments? They cannot make their car payments..?? Tough cookies! Walk a mile in our shoes! I have a nice bridge I am living under and I will be glad to share it with any one of them, as long as they get their priorities right and start doing the right thing for a change!!

Medicare is automatic once they send the card to you. You don't do anything if you want Medicare.

You should also KNOW how old you have to be for full retirement benefits. If you don't, then that's not the Republicans fault.
That's your fault for not being informed.

You can still go to the Social Security site and learn. Websites are not being shut down. Get your answers there.

My decision to "go sign up" is based on my individual circumstances, not one-size-fits-all TP misconceptions. Why Oct 1? My 65th birthday is Dec 3, making the 3 months prior date Sept 3. I gave the card a month to arrive. It did not. With or without the card, I still have to "go sign up" because of the following:

My full SS benefits are not reached until age 66. I do not plan to sign up then either since I want the benefits to "grow" on their own and through further contribution via continued employment. However, I am currently unemployed, meaning I cannot afford premiums, deductibles or co-pays.

I can't get Medicaid based on disability or through OC since Governor Perry decided to pander to the TP instead of giving low-income uninsured Texans access to expanded Medicaid. My household income is below poverty level, meaning Perry's grandstanding disqualifies me for marketplace tax credit. The way it is set up here, I "fall through the cracks." There are no marketplace options for millions and millions of Texans in my situation.

I currently get excellent medical care through the Harris County system that services uninsured and low-income with sliding-scale plans. However, I do not know if I can continue with that assistance once I reach Medicare eligibility age. Since the household gross monthly income qualifies me for longstanding state Medicare assistance programs for help with premiums, deductibles and copays that the governor has left unmolested, I need to go first to Harris County to see how my eligibility status will or will not be affected by reaching Medicare age. I then need to go apply for the state Medicare assistance programs if I am not eligible to keep my current status. Neither one of those can be done online. I have to appear in person.

The Social Security visit factors in here because if I do not qualify for the Medicare assistance programs that can help me "scratch and crawl my way" to full retirement benefits, then I will be FORCED onto SS before I am ready. That will have the potential to affect the fixed income amounts I will have to live on FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. FYI, a visit to the website does not give me access to the details of my personal SS account. I have to go there in person.

This would not be happening had the governor not denied uninsured low-income Texans access to Medicaid, since I would qualify on October 1 for that OC benefit, having not yet reached Medicare age. Since I would still be 64 on October 1, had he not done that, I would be covered that way until I am closer to full retirement age and be in a better position to consider signing up for Medicare with full, (yet premature IMO, since I want to apply at age 70).

So tell me, please, who is it who's not informed and now who's arguing for the sake of arguing?

After paying an exorbitant amount for years for health insurance I couldn't even use because of the high deductible, I, too, waited with bated breath to finally be able at the age of 65 to have Medicare. I was not ready to apply for SS because I wanted to accrue a higher benefit and, therefore, had to apply for Medicare.

I think you'll find the reps at the SSA to be very helpful when you're ready to apply.

I'm not going to beat on the horse that has been buried, dug up a few times and is still being stomped into the ground from President Bush and the mess he left us in that Obama has been trying desperately to dig us out of, but that is exactly what it is. Obama took on a huge mess from Bush running us into the ground throughout his terms that we are still struggling to recover from. Healthcare had been in trouble for years even before Obama took office. Affordable healthcare should be something everyone is entitled to, not just a select few, but every US citizen. Its just unbelievable the length that certain parties will go to, even shutting down the government because do not want to cooperate. Perhaps those that agree with this government shut down would best be served with a cold cup of tea and green eggs and ham, Sam! such a shame!
