News organizations are divided on whether to accept invitations Thursday and Friday for private meetings with Attorney General Eric Holder to discuss the Department of Justice guidelines on targeting journalists in leak investigations.
The Justice Department invited Washington bureau chiefs to the meetings after President Obama said May 23 that he wanted Holder to review those guidelines in the wake of leak investigations that seized phone records and e-mails of journalists and described one reporter, James Rosen of Fox News, as a "co-conspirator." But the Justice Department has insisted that the discussions be off the record – which generally means that the journalists in attendance cannot report what is said.
