Watching Healthcare Law Implementation on C-Span

Posted: Aug 1, 2013

Why do the Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee insist on wasting time by making speeches? They are on that committee to ask questions of anything that comes before them (not just the new healthcare laws), not make political speeches.

The same thing happens all the time. The Republicans are asking questions, while the Democrats make speeches on how mean the Republicans are. I don't find the questions mean or trying to "undo" the law. In fact, I think these are questions most people want to know...some are on implementing it, the waivers, what about a scenario of a 25-year-old who lives in Hawaii while parents live in Michigan, who's going to get taxpayer information (more than 300 agencies), why the employer hold on mandating it while individuals still have to get coverage by 2014, what happens if someone who gets subsidies turns out to not qualify for it - how will the IRS get that money back; how do they figure out who is not qualified for subsidies, and how long will it take for the IRS to investigate and find any abuse/misunderstanding (answer was 2 years).

Gary Cohen answers most questions with "It's not my responsibility." BTW, Gary Cohen is Deputy Administrator and Director of Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight. We all know who Doug Werfel is, and some of his answers were "I'll have to get back to you on that."

Anyone that is lawfully here in the U.S.A., students, people with Visa's, lawful permanent residents, they can apply for insurance subsidies. (Eligible residents also apply to "noncitizens who, while outside the U.S. and their home country, were granted permission to enter and reside in the U.S. because they have a well-founded fear of persecution in their home country. Refugees are “qualified” immigrants and are “lawfully present” in the U.S.," a person granted asylum, those "noncitizens who are granted withholding deportation status," those "paroled to the U.S. from Cuba or Haiti," and others who are granted "humanitarian status," domestic, human traffiking victims,  confidential informants of other countries who are of help to law enforcement, just to name a few. There's also the indefinite visa nonimmigrants who can stay here forever at will, who will also be covered.

I think Republicans waste the most time. - sm.

It's kinda funny to complain about Democrats wasting time when Republicans have been abusing filibusters and wasting time on 40 (40!) repeals of Obamacare that they know are never going to make a lick of difference.

Not to mention Cruz's threats of a government shutdown.

Yes please, let's blame Dems for wasting everyone's time by making speeches.

I think they ALL waste time - equally - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Wasting time and filibustering isn't just in one party. It's in both parties. I've heard some pretty long filibusters coming from the democrats.

I'm still doing research on why it's okay to filibuster if your a democrat, but not a republican. Pretty interesting stuff.

I don't think it's okay for either. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
But Republicans have been abusing it far more than Dems lately.
Oh, please. - nm

Democrats have their fair share. They are not free from blame.
Who said they were free from blame? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The post was about Dems wasting time, wasn't it? I said I think Republicans waste more time--and they DO. I didn't say Dems were totally free from blame. Come on--they're politicians and I am not naive...

My post was not only about filibusters, by the way. It was also about endless repeals and a government shut-down as well.
I don't think it's okay for either side - and it's being equally done recently
[ In Reply To ..]
When a person sides with one group they always think the other side is wrong, does this or that more. But reading about the issues and what is going on lately, it's even in the waste of time/filibuster area.

These Committee's are for Fact-Finding, not political speeches - Truthhurts

The Democrats definitely are playing politics on the healthcare.

I'm sure they read the 20,000 pages of regulations and know exactly what is going on with this law, and I'm sure they read the 2300 pages of the law (sarcasm).

Bias showing - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
not to mention your admitted sarcasm ;)

do you *really* believe that Republicans are *not* playing politics here?
Well, they're asking serious questions and not - Truthhurts

giving speeches or condemning the other side.

You don't believe questions should be asked? I do, especially with the way the regulations keep growing.

I almost wrote the very same thing and am glad (sm) - Libby

I read these responses first. (Usually I rush to reply, only to find that someone else already wrote my same sentiments!)

Of course, the republicans are going to blame the democrats. It's all they know how to do and all that they HAVE been doing since Obama was elected TWICE by the majority of people.

The Affordable Care Act has been upheld by the Supreme Court, and now those politicians like Cruz and his ilk want to shut down the government over something that's already been upheld by the Supreme Court.

I hope I live long enough to see the day when ALL people are eligible/can afford healthcare, not merely those who are rich and can afford it. Germany has healthcare for all and seems to be doing just fine (along with all the other countries that are more advanced than the USA in this area).

All Cruz' whining is done in favor of the rich and, once again, against those who barely earn a living rage, the middle income and the poor.

I disagree - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
When talking with my friends at dinners and on weekends we all share the same opinions too.

The republicans will blame the democrats if there is something to blame them for, which usually there is.

Obama was not elected by the majority of the people and it's getting tiring having to try and explain that. Most of the people in the country didn't even vote, had their votes discounted, voted for Romney on the machines and yet it kept going for Obama. And please do not tell me to get over it. I'm over it. I learned a long time ago that's just the way it was. Just like the one's who voted for Gore but Bush got in. Same thing. I also learned a long time ago that wall street and the uber rich are the ones who choose who will be the next president, not us. Do you really think that Bill Gates, Rockefellers, Rothchilds, Soros and all those other uber elites who fund politicians are going to let Billy Joe or any one of us pick who is president. I wrote on this board before the election that Obama was already chosen for the position again, we just needed to wait around for them to announce it. It was also confirmed when in Europe the bankers were being rewarded their payouts at 2:00 pm eastern time for Obama's re-election. I thought that's weird half the country has not even voted yet and Romney was ahead in the polls, but yeah, whatever, confired what i already knew and what I had tried to explain many times. I forget what station I was watching (not TV), it was live on the internet. I had some German TV station up and that's when I saw the celebrations. Votes are just a design to make us actually think we picked who is in. The people who make the decisions regarding what is going on in the country (and world) are who make the decisions about who will be in. Again, nothing to get over there, just a fact of life that I learned to live with a long time ago. It just amazes me when people say Bush or Obama won by the majority of the people. I just laugh and say, well if that makes you feel good to believe that then that's your own preference.

But I see a lot of filibustering from democrats regarding issues and I see democrats not working with republicans. Voting down anything that is good for us if they don't get their way.

I too hope I live long enought to see when everyone can have good health care, but until you make congress suffer under the same program they are implementing on us it won't happen.

Besides, you do realize Obamacare (or as many people are referring to it now as Obamadon't care) has nothing to do with health care.

Germany's health care, as Canada's is not all perfect so you cannot use that as an excuse.

All politicans are only in favor of the rich. Pelousy, Reid, Clinton, all of them. They sure don't care about us.
Whether Germany's healthcare is or is not (sm) - Libby
[ In Reply To ..]
"perfect" makes no difference, other than it shows that European countries care about their citizens and those citizens' ability to continue BREATHING, whereas in America, only the very, very RICH are supposed to be entitled to it.

Once "Obamacare" takes off and the people see how much they're saving with their premiums, the republicans are scared to death that people will LIKE Obamacare, as they feel now about Social Security and Medicare. And God forbid America might do something for ALL Americans, not just a chosen few.

My God, even in Iraq -- after we bombed, occupied and killed a bunch of civilians -- even BUSH provided for every Iraqi to have healthcare, yet he couldn't care less about Americans, just like the clowns in THIS circus.
You must have forgotten that Hillary Clinton WANTED - Libby
[ In Reply To ..]
to implement a healthcare plan for ALL people, but the republicans fought her tooth and nail against it, too.

Those republicans simply DON'T want the poor, underpaid or elderly people anywhere near them and THEIR "entitlements."

I personally voted for Obama the first time BECAUSE he promised to provide healthcare to those who couldn't afford to pay for it.

I also voted for him the second time, as well.

You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to my opinion, as well, so it doesn't matter if you agree with me or not.

What's your point? - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
Trying to read through all you wrote and can't really tell.

Your opening question was a generalization, but to answer it I would say call some of the "Democrats" directly and ask them.

Why should I call the Democrats? I watched it Live on C-Span - Truthhurts

and saw what they did when it came to their turn to ASK questions (which they didn't).

Come on, be fair now... - just saying

Your original post opened with this question:

Why do the Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee insist on wasting time by making speeches?

And I merely suggested you call the Democrats in question and ask THEM.

Now you post why should I call the democrats?

I am just reminding you of the question you asked. If you want to know, ask them.

Sounded pretty straightforward to me. What was your - problem understanding it?

Healthcare's Bipartisan Problem. Almost Half Of Healthcare SpendingJan 13, 2017
healthiest half of the population consumes only 3% of health care costs. The only alternative would appear to be taxpayer subsidies. It is next to impossible, politically, to take away freebees once in place. Income redistribution continues to increase. The 2010 health law, also known as Obamacare, forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have ins ...

Not for those who are too impatient to read anything longer than a paragraph. While our earnings are being ground into dust, the HC providers we ultimately work for are marking up everything they deliver by 300%, 400% and more, making outsize profits and paying obscene salaries to executives.  Example:  A patient charged $1.50 for a generic Tylenol pill when you can buy a bottle of 200 for $4.00 from Walmart (2 cents a pill).  https://www.walmart.com/ip/39661523 ...that's ...
