Sanders knew all along that he could never win the nomination. He sets up a campaign that brings in the gullible socialist/communist/extreme lefties, feigns a campaign opposing Clinton (but never took advantage of obvious points he could have scored on, like her dishonesty or her national security email scandal. This was considered very strange by political observers).
The fake "controversy" brings in a lot of disaffected, uninformed.
Meanwhile, Clinton gets to stay more in a "central" position, and then finally Sanders hands off his followers to her.
Very clever, and obviously sucked a lot of people in.

He was a bit too careful to avoid landing a punch on Clinton's glass jaw.
He could have put her away but he didn't. I think anyone would have good reason to wonder why.
