Well obviously, it's terrible news, because by definition anything that happens while Obama is president must be bad news.
At least, that's how the TPR mind seems to work.
It's funny. Out here in Cheneyland (Wyoming) - sm

our gas prices have barely gone down. If we do find something under $3.00 a gallon, it's somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.89, so it hasn't gone down a lot.
And our gas bills for heat, electric, etc. are pretty high, as well.
Oh, well, I guess that's what ya get when ya move to a red state.
Save me a place, Colorado; I'll be back!

I see Wyoming and Georgia have the lowest minimum wages at $5.15/hour. Good thing it defaults to Federal, I believe.

Republican Tunnel Vision/Obstructionism - Too bad, so sad
[ In Reply To ..]
After Bush crashed the economy, the biggest reason the economy did not bounce back as quick as it could have is that the Republicans refused to fund the infrastructure projects that Obama wanted to put people back to work. Instead they voted to cut unemployment and shut down the government. This country's roads, bridges, public/sewer systems all need extensive work--many city water systems are over 100 years old. Now that the work has been put off for so long, it is going to cost even more to renovate the systems.
Things are going pretty good, economy-wise. What is the Republican response? They want to shut the government down again.
What is so really incredibly stupid is the unrecognized cost of shutdowns. When independent contractors have to shut down, most government contracts have penalty clauses where the government must pay extra for the cost of the shutdown of a project and then restart. Standard and Poor's said the last Republican shutdown took $24 billion out of the economy and reduced yearly fourth quarter GDP growth by 0.6 percent.
Republican government shutdowns--the very definition of insanity.
The only ones talking about a shutdown - are the democrats

Bush did not tank the economy. It was a combination of denial by Barney Frank being the head of the Finance Committee and ignoring the coming problem by Congress by not voting for more regulation of Wall Street and the Fed. Selective memory?
Obama wanted to put the country back to work BUT don't you remember the stimulus for the shovel-ready jobs that didn't work? He was totally wrong on the assumption that all those jobs were going to be created. The requirement, though, was that all those jobs had to be ready to be up and running in 90 days to qualify for any stimulus money He even admitted it...or is that selective memory, too?
To Quote: Obama said later that he learned that “one of the biggest lies in government is the idea of ‘shovel-ready’ projects.” It turned out that only about $20 billion to $40 billion in construction contracts were truly ready to go. The rest were tied up in the endless contracting delays and bureaucratic hassles associated with building anything in America.
http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/the-myth-of-shovel-ready-jobs-again/
So, it was all due to government regulations that the shovel ready jobs weren't ready, not because of any party in Congress.
Quoting your words when you stated: Republican government shutdowns--the very definition of insanity.
Don't think so. It was because of Obama and his sequester that government shut down last time and it was only nonessential government employees that were furloughed and other employees with late pay while public parks and memorials were shut down. Nothing else shut down and government ran normally even with the shutdown. What independent contractors were affected? I would love to know. The only businesses I know that were affected was the SBA. Their loans may have been held up for that 2 weeks. The Dems almost succeeded to work people into a frenzy. Only the sensible people didn't worry because they knew most services wouldn't be shut down.
Also, to your shutdown claim, no one EXCEPT THE DEMS are talking about a shutdown again, hoping the uninformed will once again believe the big bad Republicans hate the people. Hopefully, people are opening their eyes and don't believe their lies this time.
Your last sentence is already coming true - sm

as evidenced by last month's elections and yesterday's special election in Louisiana. Some of the intelligence in the democrat party is starting to surface. They look to the republicans to get things back on track AGAIN.
African-American unemployment vs overall - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
CNN pointed out the large discrepancy in the numbers for African-American unemployment versus the overall statistic of 5.8%. Don't remember exacts, but it is pretty drastic, (11% for African-Americans and now 5.8% overall???).
Anyway, the subject of racism in hiring was very carefully broached in that newscast.
This article from 2013 is interesting view of that.

Job gains - Lee
[ In Reply To ..]
Rosie, this would be good news if it were not a gross distortion of statistics, like counting my 3 part-time jobs. Or, not fully scrutinizing the reports by companies who outsource jobs and count them as OUR jobs. Are they counting seasonal jobs? I think so. Statistics can often be just the fox guarding the hen house, a pacifier for the masses to encourage more personal debt spending to plunge us deeper into slavedom for the powers that be. Also, I count college graduates who cannot find their promised dream jobs as unemployed. Since they do not show up in the unemployment statistics, they do not count. Contract laborers who get aced out of the job market do not get counted among the unemployed either because they cannot collect unemployment benefits.

While I can appreciate the frustration MTs here feel when they see reports such as this, that doesn't discount the fact that the economic situation continues to improve.
This is not a gross distortion of statistics. This is a standard reporting methodology that the Labor Department has used for years, in good economic times and bad, under both Republican and Democratic presidents.
The MT field doesn't reflect the improving economy because it is a dying industry. One need only read these boards for about ten minutes to recognize the ugly truth in that. It's going overseas or to voicerec, and MTSOs are under ever-increasing pressure to cut costs more and more. And all that is terrible news for the people who have put their lives into being MTs. But again, it doesn't change the fact that the economy - on average - is steadily improving.
Denying these facts won't help anyone. There's an old blacksmith saying about hammering the iron in front of you, not the silver you wish you had. Seems like it applies here.
I agree with Lee - sm

I would have to say though its not a gross distortion, its outright lying. They don't tell you about the thousands they have put out of work. They don't tell you that what jobs they did create are part time and unsustainable to live on.
It's one lie after another and unfortunately some people buy it.
I agree with you AND Lee. - sm
