Henry Ford, for all his faults, was famous for his foresight in raising plant worker salaries well above the norm so they could afford to buy the cars, thus creating a market for his product. What's changed?
Short version, as the planet has continued to develop and markets have been created in hundreds of countries, business can make the products cheaper overseas and sell there too. Plus, inevitably, the identification and loyalty of "American" businesses to America is disappearing as their operations and their executives become increasingly international.
I'd say we got off the backs of business, all right. For those who thought this was a great idea, are we done yet or does big business need more help from us?
