Question for travel-savvy posters

Posted: Apr 3, 2012

I have not flown in years....scarily, not since the availability of the internet, have I traveled except for driving in my car.

I'm in the process of planning my vacation of a lifetime, which is traveling to the east coast (Maine, to be specific) for 10 days of rest and relaxation.

Now, here's where my ignorance shows.

Can anyone tell me the best way on the internet to track down flight information?  I have no idea how much to put aside for travel expenses, and I've never looked up flight information for any reason (unless seeing Travelocity commercials counts, and I'm pretty sure I'd never be able to navigate that site).

If any of you are travel savvy and can point my befuddled head in the right internet direction to start nailing down flight prices, I'd be very grateful, to say the least.

Thanks in advance!!!

suitcases, garden gnomes...? Don't really know what that's about.

Congratulations on your travel plans. I think you can just go to a search engine and type in a few words, and what you are looking for will be there.

I like to use kayak.com to check on airline fares. What I have found is; once I find the fare they list (you can't book directly through kayak, it is only a search engine for fares)I go directly to the airline site and book directly with the airline. Kayak will search priceline, travelocity, expedia, etc. for you but I tend to find the best price directly with the airline. Another similar site is bookingbuddy.com.

These sites are very easy to use, just type in the airports, dates, and you can narrow it down to only non-stop flights, etc. I try not to narrow it down too much until I find the overall fares and then I go from there on specifics.

As the poster above said, the travel sites are easy to navigate through. I've used Expedia a couple times for air, hotel and car rental. The questions are specific as to what you are wanting to book, air only, air and hotel, etc. You just make your choices and it moves on to the next step. They give you many flight options to choose from, and then you look at all the available flights for the day you want to leave and pick the one that fits your schedule/needs best. You can also go directly to the airlines to check their fares. Again fairly simple, you type in your dates of travel, your departure city and your destination, and it will show you what flights are available and the prices. Once your flight is booked, you can also go onto the airline's site and choose your seats and also print your tickets I believe to make the check-in process go much quicker. It's all explained on the different sites; you just need to read the information. Be careful not to go over the 50 lb limit on your luggage per piece, which is what most of them are, cuz then you have to pay even more for your checked bags. Hope you have a great trip!

I hope you plan to go to Acadia National Park! - nm

I took a 7 day sailing adventure on one of these about 15 years ago - best vacation in my life! Loved it!

Thanks for the tip - We're staying in Stonington - Cant wait to go

We've rented a little dockhouse in Stonington Harbor for a week, right where the lobsterman load up in the early morning and return in the afternoon. The views are spectacular and, well, we can't get much closer to being on the water than in a dockhouse, lol!

I'm so excited. We've been together for 4 years and never even had the money for a honeymoon, so we're stashing this year's refund and adding to it so we can actually relax and enjoy ourselves.

I'm just afraid I'll handcuff myself to the place and never want to leave once I get there, LOL!

Thanks, everyone, for the tips...I really appreciate your time :-)

I travel to the Middle East 3-4 times a year. I start my quest for airfare and hotels with Kayak.com. Then I do other searches to see how they compare. Kayak does most of the work for you whether you search for airfare or hotels. They compare many different sites and you can set up alerts and the will email you the prices weekly or daily. The middle of the week you find the lowest fares. Also, I then go to Trip Advisor and look up the reviews of the hotel I will be staying before I actually book the hotel. You can even look on Trip Advisor for things to do while you are visiting Maine. I hope this makes it a little easier for you. Also, some airlines are now charging for carry-on bags as well.

I Have A Serious Question. Why Are PostersAug 07, 2017
Nothing else to do with their time?  It is so sad that MTs stoop to the level of arguing for the sake of argument and no one is going to be moved by their attacks on Trump or Obama.  Reading angry posts on presidential vacations is beyond my understanding.  Could someone who is caught up in this explain why subject is important to them and what they hope to achieve. Thanks.    ...

The Democrats' Travel Ban No One Likes To Talk About.Feb 02, 2017
Shahram Hadian still remembers what it felt like to be 9 years old, living in an apartment in Atlanta and waiting for his mother to return from Iran. The weeks turned into months, the months into years. He thought he might never see her again. “It’s a part of my story I don’t share a lot,” says Hadian, whose family fled Iran in December 1978 to escape the Ayatollah Khomeini’s uprising against the Shah of Iran. His father was a military man who saw the writing on the wall, as Kh ...

Travel Bans Used With Good Success To Control Outbreaks Of Diseases In AnimalsOct 17, 2014
It's called a "stand-still" order, and it's one of the FIRST steps taken by agricultural authorities with the very first or even suspected discovery of a case of certain animal diseases.  No animals are allowed to be transported in or out of the "stand-still" order area.  Now, I'm quite sure that human epidemiologists are perfectly aware both of this practice and of its effectiveness.  So there's something else going on here when it comes to implementing trave ...

Thank You To All PostersJul 14, 2012
I wanted to thank you all for your posts.  It has been a pleasure to read the posts without the insults and want to thank everyone for their partiicipation. We may not all agree on everything, but there is no reason we can't have a discussion without insults and over the past few days has been nice to see that. One other thing I ask.  While I have said in the past you can express however you feel about politicians, I would like to ask that posters refrain from calling politician ...

Posters need to remember this is a political board for discussion of political topics.  Keep your opinions about other posters off the board.  Settle your personal grievances off the board, not on it.  A lot of issues are being discussed, but in between there are posters who don’t like other posters and keep going after them.  If you have a problem with certain posters just don’t read their posts.  Don’t come on the board to tell everyone you don’ ...

Rude, accusatory, insulting, name calling, condescending, smart allecky, "I know better than you", "you need to educate yourself", and any type of post like that is either being edited or deleted. Those kind of discussions need to stop.  You are all too busy bickering with each other that you all know more than the other person that any type of political discussion is being lost. The topics on this board can be very inflammatory and sensitive.  In general, you need to be able to control your emotions.  There will be heated discussions at times, but civility can be maintained.  Issues can be discussed without resorting to name calling, insults, or foul language.  We want everyone to express their views, discuss and debate topics, but please leave out the derogatory name calling.  Everyone has a different opinion and while we may not always agree ...

This is a political board for discussion of political issues.  This board is not for general messages claiming posters are being run off the board.  Do not post a generic message telling new posters to not get discouraged, etc. Insults are coming from all sides.  One party does not dominate over another when insults are being thrown. Everyone here is an adult and I'm sure we know how to ignore certain messages.  This is a political election year and emotions are high.&n ...

Reading some of the messages and emails I have received I wanted to bring attention to the fact that posts are going past reasonable.  It is one thing to call a poster a racist, it is another to state they have committed an act of treason, or is a treasoner.  Treason is a serious crime and should not be used lightly, or rather at all.  Accusing someone of treason has its consequences and posters can be held responsible if someone files a formal complaint (i.e. lawsuit) against the ...

If you are going to reply to a poster stick to the issue the poster is talking about.  I just deleted all replies to one thread because not one reply was talking about the issue she discussed, but instead was ridiculing the poster, and then a bunch of other posters felt the need to jump on the bandwagon in ridiculing.  If you want to talk about issues or articles, things of political nature that is what this board is for.  If you don't agree with a poster and feel you need t ...

I am in the process of cleaning up the board.  I have not finished yet.  I have been deleting posts from all sides (that is both conservative and liberal).  Stop insulting/ridiculing posters.  Everytime I remove an insult another comes up.  If you don’t agree that is fine, simply state why in a logical and adult fashion.
