with my husband's company, and I'm glad to say we enjoy a hefty discount. Ours is based on overall health (cholesterol, blood pressure, etc), not just BMI.

I think it's sensible and positive--as long as it involves only - incentive and doesn't devolve to penalty. nm

What a great idea! Phrases like "encourage employees; they (employees) can; and workers WILLING to participate" all suggest participation in the program is voluntary. I cannot understand why anyone would have a problem with that.

What happens to those people that participate and go over the BMI after a few months or a year later? Do they get fined a certain dollar amount, kicked out of the program or off their insurance or worse yet, lose their job?

Really...things usually evolve from voluntary to involuntary (as in new laws or regulations).

We would go from our current discount to the "regular" discount. We get reevaluated every year and our discount is adjusted accordingly.

I've been the same weight for the past 25 years even though I tried to lose weight umpteen times. I'm not that overweight, only 25 pounds, but I just couldn't lose it.

Last Nov. I started to lose and was so happy. Got down to my ideal weight in 4 months, then found out it was because of my illness. Tried to keep it off afterwards and did well for 4 months but gained all but 10 pounds back even though I didn't eat more. Very disappointed. :-(

So I'd be one that would probably never even qualify for a discount. LOL

You might actually be okay by their guidelines. I believe your cholesterol and blood pressure readings are more important. Also, they do a nicotine test, and that weighs in as well.

However, I don't know what they do for people who genetically have high cholesterol or hypertension, or for people who have nicotine in their systems via secondhand smoke.

I would hope they would have a way to find that out. Otherwise, they could be penalizing a person for no reason.

My BP reading is only high when I have to go to the doctor or some days when I'm on this board. LOL

A wonderful small MT company in my town will soon be faced with closing if the Health Care Reform bill is passed. I made a very poor job decision at the end of May and tried to stick it out through June and July. Realized that what the company promised in terms of production and editing pay was never going to happen for me and have since found a wonderful place where I can make enough to pay the bills.
