Think Reid will reveal his "source?"
Posted: Aug 7, 2012
He claims "someone told him" that Romney has not paid taxes in 10 years. That's a pretty serious charge, especially if he does not/will not name his source. Anyone can claim "someone told me" something and then it's reported as truth? I don't think he HAS a source; I think it's political strategy -- get the media to report it and people will take his word for it. Voters are smarter than that.;
Political strategy indeed...sm - JTBB

How's it feel to have your candidate attacked by unsubstantiated claims? LOL. I have no idea if he's telling the truth or not, and really don't care. I think he's giving the republican a good dose of their own medicine, and the outrage from pubs is absolutely hilarious.
I have no idea, but... - (see message)

....I'm a strong Obama supporter, think Romney should release more tax returns than just the one or two years when he knew he was running for president, yadda, yadda, yadda; but I must say I think it was bad of Reid to have come out with this statement. From what he says, it is purely hearsay, and I would jump and shout if some Romney backer was putting stuff "out there" against Obama that could not be confirmed....and I do!
I'm a moderate Democrat and won't even CONSIDER voting for Romney; but I believe in fairness that goes both ways. I hate hypocrisy, no matter which side it's on. I know I'm biased, but I see a lot more hypocrisy from ultra-conservatives than from Democrats, any day.
Still, I don't think it was right for Reid to put this out there without any kind of proof. It may or may not be true, but by NOT releasing his returns, Romney, of course, makes it look even more suspicious.
Don't get me wrong--I don't like Romney, but I'm starting to think that his having paid ZERO in taxes for 10 years might not be the story he's wanting to keep from coming out. He seems to have flat-out denied that he's ever paid "zero" in taxes, and it will look HORRIBLE if it turns out that he's lying about that. I think there are probably OTHER things in his returns that he knows won't look good to the average, middle-of-the-road American voter.

Very true that although I don't LIKE Reid making these statements without some proof to back them up, it IS a taste of the Republicans own medicine. Unsubstantiated rumors, "reports" without facts, "volunteer investigators" looking into Obama's birth certificate (as if THAT'S proof positive! Laughable)....all the crap that Obama has had to be up against. It hasn't been a "fair fight" at all, in my opinion.
Yep...and if you just look at ....sm - JTBB

the Romney campaign, about 2/3, if not more, of his attacks on Obama are just straight up lies/mirepresentations...i.e. "you didn't build that."
And now the latest thing in Ohio is just par for the course. Pubs trying to suppress voters, Obama campaign taking legal action, and pubs hiding behind the military. Just wow.

In Ohio, they used to have early voting policy in place for everyone. That was, of course, until the pubs (go figure) changed it so military can vote early until the Monday before election day, everyone else the Friday before election day.
Suit was filed to go back to the way that it was to include everybody INCLUDING MILITARY (screaming caps added for emphasis... not directed at you... I just want to fit in).
Pub/con translation: Obama hates the military (and America) because he is a pinko commie socialist Kenyan and is trying to block the military vote. Can you think of a better reason for overdramatics and fake outrage?
Funny that basically "go Bing yourself" is an appropriate repsonse for this board and qualifies as political conversation. Go figure.

You wrote a good post. Very reasoned and well written.
Two things struck me - the use of "ultra-conservatives" and "Democrats" in the same comparison. A more appropriate comparison to "ultra conservatives" would be "ultra liberals," do you agree? Also, you pointed out the exact strategy the original poster mentioned - Reid is trying to force Romney to release more tax returns by making the unsubstantiated claims. That's a definite political ploy.
Well, honestly.... - (see message)

...I actually considered saying "ultra-conservatives" and "ultra-liberals" when I was typing that post because, as you point out, those WOULD be the opposite ends of the spectrum; but then I thought about what I, personally, observe where I live.
My honest assessment is that the majority of the voters in my community and, in fact, in my entire state are either ultra-conservative or moderate Democrats...if there are a lot of moderate Republicans, they're in hiding right now; and if there are any ultra-liberals, they're extremely few and far between, and they would probably all be found in one small area of the state (not near me)! I'm serious...there is only ONE county in my state that goes to the Democrat in nearly every presidential election! As a Dem, myself, it pains me to know that my vote is like spitting into the ocean in my state; but I'm still an idealist who loves this country, loves the freedoms we all enjoy, and absolutely LOVES the act of going to the polls and exercising my voting privilege on election day. :-D I voted today, in fact, in our primary elections here. I wouldn't miss a vote even just for DOG-CATCHER, whenever I have the opportunity. Believe it or not, there ARE country-loving, patriotic Democrats in this country!! :-)
So, again, I wanted my post to reflect my own personal observations, which is all I can sincerely speak about.
As far as Reid making that statement as a strategy or a political ploy, as you believe, it could very well be. Or, he could've just been being dumb! I just don't KNOW with 100% certainty since I can't get in Reid's head. I can speak to my gut feeling or impression, though, and my impression is that Reid does not make himself look good by making the statement and then carrying on as if it were FACT. No one has convinced me yet that it's a fact, and it's irresponsible to make such a specific accusation without any proof.
If it's a planned political ploy on Reid's part, I suppose it's a pretty good way to force Romney's hand over releasing his tax returns. But, if Romney does and proves that what Reid is saying is not true, then it's really sleazy, to me, to have spread the rumor, based on just what "someone" told him. In my opinion, that falls into Michelle Bachmann territory of respect and being taken seriously (NOT!). In fact, it kind of reminds me of the sort of crap she would pull.
There is no source - its a diversion

There are no laws governing college performance. Congress does not assemble to hash out college performance protocols. We don't submit our school transcripts to an oversight body for compliance and possible sanction, and as far as I know, performing poorly in Chemistry or English has never been a reliable barometer of personal integrity. All salient differences between college transcripts and tax returns.

McCain and Harry Reid share a background and interest in boxing. Just last month they were together when they co-presented a bill to help prevent boxing fraud. By saying it was a "Bain investor" that was a smokescreen to take heat off the obvious choice of McCain, who reviewed 23 years of Romney's tax returns while considering him for VP.
I think that's very possible...sm - JTBB
