Score a few million for the health care president

Posted: Apr 30, 2014

In the previous years before Obamacare went into effect, I always had on average 1 report a day where the doc would dictate something to the effect "the patient did not come in because he had no insurance,"  or "the patient had run out of her medications and could not afford to refill," or "the patient left AMA (against medical advice) due to lack of coverage."

The first change I saw was:

Between 2013 and 2014, I noticed that there were dictations where the comment was made that patient was rescheduling surgery for spring of 2014 or electing to delay for awhile.

The most recent change I am seeing:

This last week, I had a report where one patient who had been found with colon cancer 10 years ago with a resection, had had good followup up until 7 years ago when the patient lost health insurance, was now having his first colonoscopy in 7 years.

Recently I had a report where a woman was having a breast mass removed that she had been aware of for 2 years prior.

Hopefully, soon we will not hear any more comments about delay of care.

I see a change from putting off health care to people now getting the health care services that they desparately want and need.

Way to go Obama!

so much for caring about your fellow citizen and the overall health of the nation.

IT IS CRIMINAL for people to die waiting for care whether a veteran of the military or an ordinary jane or john doe. We are better than that.

NO ONE is saying hand it all over free. We are asking, make it so that I don't have to choose between eating and healthcare, paying the utilities and healthcare, paying my contractual obligations and healthcare.

Too many people are willing to say 'I got my healthcare you get yours' or in other ways turn their heads.

OBAMA refused to do that, and if he had to semi-force ACA into law, GOOD ON HIM!

Maybe the rest of the civilized world will praise us for putting our $$ into DOMESTIC needs versus invading another sovereign nation on manufactured justification.

Yes, ask Dean Angstadt about - Obamacare

"So why did he resist enrolling in ObamaCare for so long? As he explained to the Washington Post's Erik Wemple, he's a Fox News guy who trusted Republicans' dire warnings about the law."

Quote from:

http://theweek.com/article/index/260739/speedreads-fox-news-viewer-obamacare-saved-my-life

Link below (the original article in the Philadelphia Inquirer) source of the following quote:

"That refrain changed this year when a faulty aortic valve almost felled Angstadt. Suddenly, he was facing a choice: Buy a health plan, through a law he despised, that would pay the lion's share of the cost of the life-saving surgery - or die. He chose the former...

Angstadt faces a long recovery, but his conversion to ACA supporter is done. The political storm around the ACA, he said, is the political parties "fighting each other over things that can benefit people."

"For me, this isn't about politics," he added. "I'm trying to help other people who are like me, stubborn and bullheaded, who refused to even look. From my own experience, the ACA is everything it's supposed to be and, in fact, better than it's made out to be."

good ole days right before Obamacare. My insurance company adored me and allowed me to see any doctor, undergo any test, and have any surgery I desired with absolutely no restrictions! 6 weeks in the bin? No problem. They were there for me, fought for me, supported me. The evil empire took that all away.
That's some great insurance you described - Why did your insurance company stop it?
[ In Reply To ..]
You ever wonder that? It wasn't the "evil empire" it was YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY.

Why do you think Obamacare is responsible for your insurance company doing that?

On another note, that was very good insurance. Why do you think some people deserve such great insurance (and are now complaining until the cows come home now that THEIR INSURANCE COMPANIES have stopped it) and others deserve terrible insurance?

I would guess the insurance you describe did NOT come from an MTSO, am I right? That's because the insurance they offer is terrible. I live for the day we can choose between grandfathered junk policies and Obamacare.

Oh, say the naysayers, all the employees will abscond from employer based insurance! And SO THEY SHOULD!

Why do some people "deserve" great insurance and others "deserve" crappy insurance? What made your insurance company stop the great insurance? Why do we have to keep our crappy employer based insurance instead of being offered a chance to be on Obamacare?

I do not know the answers to this, but I believe the big business conservative ideology is what is behind the big bucks lobbying AGAINST Obamacare.

They want us to do quality work and get paid terrible money, they want us to be grateful to big daddy employer for any little crumb and not to dream of going anywhere else.

So why on earth is it Obamacare's fault that your insurance company changed the rules and why shouldn't we all be able to get decent insurance?

I can answer that - Not the person you responded to
[ In Reply To ..]
First, yes it does sound like it was a good insurance policy. Many of us had great policies, never had a problem. Then comes on Odontcare (aka Obamascare). Because of the rules and regulations set forth by Obamascare insurance companies were left with no choice. Take for instance my insurance company. They dropped me. Before Obamacare I had insurance, after Obamacare I did not. Letter stated that Obamacare is putting restrictions and everything on the insurance companies. Hence, indeed it is not the insurance companies, but in fact Obamacare at fault.

Again, it wasn't the insurance companies. The insurance companies were fine until Obamacare came along and directed them in what they had to do.

On another note, your third paragraph is what is wrong with some people in the country. It's the mentality of you had great insurance, others did not, so now you should be punished because others did not have what you had, so now your punishment is either not have anything or pay 3 times as much as you used to. payback time!

You cannot penalize people for having good insurance. What they need to do is fix it for the people who don't have it and leave the ones who are happy with their insurance alone.

Sorry, you don't know the answers to this. Your just regurgitating the "I got mine so blank the rest of you". It's payback time now and I hope you are unhappy because you don't deserve good health insurance.

Plain and simple answer to your last question. It is Obamacare's fault that insurance companies are changing the rules because Obamacare is setting forth the rules that they have to change from. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that one. All you have to do is read.

Everyone who wants insurance should be able to get insurance they want. People who are happy with their insurance at a price they can afford should be able to continue with what they had.

The fact the poster blames Obamacare for that not happening is facetious.

Restrictions on care and providers that I see happening seem to be because of $, and from what I can tell the doctors are not the greedy ones, it's the insurance companies.

[ In Reply To ..]
There are over 300 million people in America. The majority do not support Obamacare. The majority support health care reform, NOT Obamacare.

And because there were absolutely no - efforts at reform before 2008

[ In Reply To ..]
I presume that is one of the reasons why Obama got voted in, and again a second term.

Had a Republican got in either or both times, preexisting conditions would still be not covered and we would still be getting coverage dropped for arbitrary reasons.

I think most people knew the Republicans would not do anything since they had never attempted to reform health care in the past.

For all its faults, Obamacare is something, and some people (see Dean Angstadt's story) are actually getting a whole lot of something.

Obamacare sucks. - nana

[ In Reply To ..]
I went from paying a copay of $25.00 per visit, $50.00 for urgent care and $150 for ER visits to a $2500 deductible per year, then 80/20. And my insurance premium went up to $188.00 ever two weeks for me and my husband. This insurance is through my employer.

So I am paying $366 per month just for the health insurance and will not use it. So the only people who will benefit off of this Obamacare are the real poor people who qualify for Medicaid or the insurance companies. They are getting all of your premiums and not wanting to pay out. I hope I never have a heart attack or someting like that that will require a hospitalization because I will end up bankrupt.

I didn't like Obamacare to begin with and now I know why. It does nothing for the average person, but then again anything the government does is not with the average persons best interest in mind.

I will be lucky to go the doctors once or twice a year and hope he will give me enough blood pressure medications to last that long cause I can't afford $150.00 every time I go to the doctors.

I am thoroughly disguisted about this insurance scam.

So I have generously linked to a list of taxes that will happen. Guess what, not one of these affect me, and am I sorry for those get taxed on Cadillac plans or tanning salons or Flexible Spending Accounts?

No I am not. They have been having it pretty cushy for all these years, about time us poorer people got a break.

I only wish I could even get Obamacare. Come on, MTSOs, how about paying the penalty instead of offering crappy policies?
Crappy policies - may make u eligible for ocare

[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah, you're being subsidized. I am not. So you probably have as good as insurance as I have and I am paying $366.00 a month for. Why don't I qualify for a subsidy? Because my employer offers insurance. Sounds like a penalty to me.

How happy would you be to be paying full amount for your insurance? And yes eventually the taxes will have to go up and then I will be paying higher insurance premiums and higher taxes for you to get cheaper insurance. Wow won't I be lucky then.

As I said Obamacare sucks. And I really don't care who likes it or doesn't.

Those of us that had good insurance before OCARE just got the royal screwing without the Vaseline.
How can anyone making an MT's wages possibly - NOT be subsidized? What do you make?
[ In Reply To ..]
Even if I had my good, high-paying inhouse job back, that paid $45K a year, I was still eligible for SOME help with ins. costs on the Obamacare site. Now that I work for an MTSO, I didn't even qualify for ANY Obamacare, not even the most-subsidized. I only qualify for Medicaid. So how the heck much are you making as an MT that you qualify for NO subsidy whatsoever?
If you have employer insurance offered you - cannot apply for Obamacare
[ In Reply To ..]
I think that stinks and that's my beef.

I look on the ehealthinsurance site and tally the premium less subsidy up and we would be a lot better off having that insurance than what my MTSO offers.
it doesn't matter how much I make - nana
[ In Reply To ..]
All that matters is my employer offers insurance so I can't go into the pools to be subsidized. That is what pisses me off. I am paying almost $400 a month for insurance when someone who has a similar policy pays $100 a month. How is that fair?

We would not qualify for subsidies anyway because between me and my husband we make too much. So we would get screwed there too.

Obamacare penalizes people who work for companies that employee more than 50 people and offer insurance.
It's not black and white. What may be true for you - is not true for someone else
[ In Reply To ..]
There is more to it than just I'm an MT so I get a subsidy and so do you. Also, if you read other parts of this board you'll know that there are MTs who are making a lot of money (wish I was one of them, but regardless they are there).

You can't just lump everyone in the same boat. When we were checking on subsidies awhile back we didn't qualify even though I don't make much (and since then make even less). Even with the subsidy it was more than I could afford.

It's also none of your business what other people make. Why do you want to know? So you can sit there with a calculator and figure out what she/he can or cannot afford and then show the posters on this board how much you know about the whole thing?

Bottom line is it's not all black and white. Each family is different depending on how much they made last year, what their projected income is this year, if they have kids, if they own their own home, what their debts are, etc, etc.

Was your previous "good" insurance - from the same employer?

[ In Reply To ..]
I am asking because what you describe now (bad copays and deductible) is similar what I have ALWAYS been paying BEFORE Obamacare and still do.

I agree that we should be allowed to choose Obamacare over employer insurance. I wish they would stop grandfathering the employer coverage, because it is no good, at least with our employers in the MT field.

Are you mad at Obamacare because you had different insurance before through the same employer, or is it because your employer changed the coverage for worse?

What I don't get is how that's Obamacare's fault. If it was the same employer and they changed the insurance, that's the insurance company/employer. If you changed insurer due to a change in work situation, that's not Obamacare's fault either.

I hope they give us a choice between employer sponsored and Obamacare because I would choose Obamacare in a flash and so I believe would most low income people.

to answer our questions - nana

[ In Reply To ..]
What we were told was my company was changing the policy to fall in line with Obamacare. We have always had Cigna insurance and up until this year it was great insurance. All I needed to worry about was making sure I had the copay.

I resent someone going into the pools and getting pretty much the same insurance that I have for less. That is a penalty to me for working and having employer sponsered insurance. Why do I want to pay almost $400 a month when someone else is paying $100 a month for the same thing.

The insurance companies are the only side of this that will make a fortune off of us and we will go broke.

Obama could have helped with subsidies without forcing everyone to buy insurance. And don't forget this may not work anyway if enough younger people don't buy health insurance. And from what I hear they're not. So when your subsidized premiums go up because of that lets see how well you like it then.

But what we had before O-care (which was basically - NOTHING) sucked even more.

I don't want the government in pretty much every aspect of my life and I defintely do not trust them enough not to get into the medical records of those on Obamacare. Call me paranoid but I don't trust our government period. And no its not because of Obama. I don't trust any politician. They are all crooks as far as I am concerned both democrats and republicans. They serve their own agenda. Ever wonder why they opted out of Obamacare for themselves and their families? Something is fishy there.

I want a republican to get back in office so they will do away with Obamacare. I think this is a bad idea and that is how I will be voting this next election.

So bring on the dislikes.

Oh and by the way, I was going to leave this job because I had a better offer but they offered health insurance and the cost of that was almost $1100 a month. I had to turn down the job. One more dagger in Obamacare.

Now before you can accept a job you have to find out everything there is to know about their insurance before you make a decision on a job.
