Right's response to summit

Posted: Feb 26, 2010

The talking point distributed on Fox was that the summit was "boring."  It is a major flaw, I guess, of this presidency that Obama does not make his meetings on crucial legislation interesting enough to entertain the opposition. Awwww.  In other words - look away - the right came off badly and Obama's directness, honesty and tendency to point out political posturing triumphed again.

MSNBC response to the summit - Some talking points

[ In Reply To ..]
"Halperin was surely being facetious, but the point about MSNBC's pro-Obama predilection was made.

The Time editor went on to rather comprehensively pan PBO's petulant performance. His comments were preceded by a clip of Pres. Obama rudely reminding Sen. John McCain of just who had won the presidential election.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: I just wonder whether that was really in the President's best interest, whether the entire episode yesterday was in the President's best interest?

MARK HALPERIN: Are we on the seven-second delay?

SCARBOROUGH: Ah, yes.

HALPERIN: I thought, you know, he in that scene and in a few others I thought he was a little too, maybe . . .

SCARBOROUGH: Petulant?

HALPERIN: Dismissive, petulant, some might say arrogant. You know he called most of the members by their first names, I think maybe to try to sort of be ingratiating and friendly. But it did seem to some--me--a little condescending.

Triple kudos to Halperin: 1. rightly criticizes PBO's condescending performance; 2. gently chides MSNBC for its pro-Obamism; and 3. ultimately offers the criticism as his own rather than relying on the technique-that-Couric-made-famous of attributing it to "some."

that calling Obama arrogant is an opinion only, not a fact. As I recall when some called GW arrogant, the reply was "that is just the way he walks." Opinions are like sprawling Texas ranches - we all have one.

And, overall, what did you think? - NJ

I was watching, real-time, when the exchange between McCain and Obama happened. McCain started by lecturing and attacking the president. He didn't take any time to present any part of a republican platform for health care reform (but we didn't expect any republicans to do that, did we?) After the attack, Obama told McCain "we are not campaigning anymore" and "we were supposed to be talking about insurance reform".

It was amusing, because McCain obviously was campaigning, hoping to save his seat. It shows the republican mentality: instead of getting reelected by what one has accomplished, one gets votes by being the most negative about the other guy,

Poor ol' John's worn out. Time for him to retire, I think.

Even CNN felt the GOP performed better in this charade than Obama did. If he's lost CNN, he's toast.
Like Shepard Smith means FOX is going liberal? - NJ

You will find opinion pieces all over and maybe some day you will be able to differentiate between them and news articles. Someday you might even come to realize that conservative voices are not shut out of the media, even on moderate and liberal stations.

Meanwhile, I cherish the guilty schoolboy look the cameras caught on Boehner's face. Even without the other awkward and empty attempts at justifying NO (like McCain's) that chastened look on Boehner was worth watching the whole pitiful debacle ^^ My goodness, I thought the dems were spineless. The republicans couldn't say squat except "start over!" because there were cameras there to catch their pro-insurance shenanigans. It was delicious!

Rather condescending, aren't you? Much like Obama! - Anon

Need I remind you, the Democrats do not need the Pubbies to pass any legislation....at least they didn't until Scott Brown was elected.

I know it must hurt to admit it, but your side had it all...and still couldn't pass HC legislation. Rather than admit it's a bad bill, you continue to demonize the Republicans.

If even Democrats are running away from this legislation, that oughta tell you something, LOL!
Short term memory problems - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
Franken wasn't seated until July. Republicans held it up so they could filibuster. Kennedy died a month later, and Kirk was appointed a month after that, lasting until Brown in early February.

So, more than half the first year of Obama's term was NOT filibuster proof.

Or did you forget all that already?

Reconciliation, here we come!

Remember Obama, Pelosi, and Reid all saying HC would be law by 12/31/2009? - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Between October and December, they had 60 votes, which was ample time to ram thru a bill that only 35% of US citizens want. They have failed miserably, yet you continue to blame those evil pubbies rather than admit the left wing of the Democrat party is inept.
And also, Obama's determination to make it - nonpartisan and in doing
[ In Reply To ..]
so allowed them to slow the process down in the first place, something which urks me and I would love to see him say "too bad, so sad" like the administration before him and just ram it through.
They never let the Pubbies participate in any of the closed-door meetings while crafting their plans - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
How in the world did Obama make this entire process "nonpartisan?" The only reason he decided to finally let the minority into this HC Summit was because of Scott Brown's election. It was a dog and pony show to try to show how "bipartisan" Obama (suddenly) was, and you bought it hook, line, and sinker.

There are only slightly less conservative than Fox. BTW, who is up for the glen beck and sarah palin tour. That would be one horrendous 3 hours. Beck is certainly raking in the moolah before he is eclipsed by someone willing to act nuttier than he does.

And if you don't like Beck so much, don't watch him. I feel the same way about Olberman and Madcow, so I don't watch them. I also don't go out of my way to post negative comments about them. I find it's easier to go thru life surrounded by people and things I like than to be perpetually angry and cynical.
