Reality check: It's time to come to terms with

Posted: Sep 13, 2012

the political and religious movements that fuel it.  Obviously there is a blurred line between freedom of speech and incitement that needs sharp focus and more precise definition.  If we can't find the fix, the ghost of bin Laden will haunt us for generations to come.  Just sayin.

I'm not sure what you're getting at - MT

Are you saying that we should put limits on our free speech so as not to possibly upset or offend someone in some backward country?

As far as I'm concerned, that video is not the reason our Embassy was attacked; it was just an excuse. The extremists hate us and will use any excuse to let us know it.

Attack - noway

[ In Reply To ..]
The attacks across the Middle East are not the result of some stupid movie. They have been planned and coordinated. The first poster sounds like Obama, appeasement to everyone. Give me a break. He should have told them to go to hell and then send one of those Tomahawk missles into there.

Mean: Time to gather ourselves in and try to be more - decent and responsible toward others. NM

I see nothing wrong with a clear legal definition of - what constitutes incitement. nm

So you want freedom of speech as long - Trigger Happy

[ In Reply To ..]
as government defines and approves the speech? Uh..no thank you.

I'm not agreeing with the guy who made the anti-islam film or saying that what he did was the brightest thing, but you are forgetting the hate speech that comes from islamic extremists. The most hate filled group calling all non-believers infidels and wanting to cut our heads off. Not only do they hate us but they also hate gay people and would soon as kill them than be open to gay marriage. These are the people we should apologize too because of a film...I don't think so.

Hmm...that sounds like some right wingers I know of..nm - JTBB

Call me a right-winger if it makes you feel better - Trigger Happy

No matter what that guy in California put in that movie, it does not justify or excuse their actions. I also don't believe that movie was the real reason behind all of this. It may have played a part, but I don't think it is the main reason. We shouldn't have to apologize for our freedom of speech. It isn't like Islam is the only religion that is ridiculed or badmouthed by others.
The problem with your argument..sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
is that nobody apologized, and in particular, the president didn't apologize. However, Hillary has put out a statement saying that the govt does not condone that film and that it does not reflect the views or sentiment of the US. Wonder why Romney hasn't done that? Maybe because he would offend his base?
You are all the time making - Trigger Happy
[ In Reply To ..]
negative comments about Christianity on here and yet you are siding with a religious group that took offense, rioted and murdered all because of one person's stated opinion in a movie...wow. This whole thing is bigger than Barrack Obama or Mitt Romney. You complained earlier about how dare Romney take this situation and turn in into a political thing to try and use it against Obama. What did you just do in your comment. You took this situation and turned it into a political thing to try and use it against Romney. This is so beyond the election to me right now.
Yeah....it should be beyond the election...sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
so do you think it helps matters when Romney goes out and critcizes the pres (with wrong info and before anyone has all the facts) of being a weak pres? What do you think the reaction to this in the middle east would be? Don't you think that if Romney's message actually holds any water with those folks who don't like us it would only encourage them to further act against a "weak" president? That's the point.

As far as the film goes, no that probably wasn't the real cause of what's going on, but lets face it...it doesn't help. Not every country out there has the tough skin that we have and can look at something like that and shrug it off. And considering what's going on in the middle east right now with new democracies trying to find their feet, renegades everywhere, and a religious hypersensitivity...yeah I think some censorship should take place. It's not that I care about their religion so much or even hurting their feelings...its more along the lines of them not being able to react appropriately at this point. I would suggest something along the lines of blocking particular countries from receiving youtube videos. That wouldn't mess with our rights, and it would give them (the middle east) less excuses.
I guess I'm tired of walking on egg shells - Trigger Happy

to make other countries like us when they don't like us to begin with. If it wasn't this movie, it would have been something else and I agree with you that I think there was more to this than just that movie. I also agree that perhaps we should keep our youtube videos from being watched in those countries...if that is even possible. I don't know.

I personally didn't find either statement by Romney or Obama very comforting as far as the situation goes. I have no problem with Hill and Obama stating that they don't condone the movie. They may not have come right out and said...hey we are sorry for the bonehead in California who made the movie...but it was just the way they said it that made it seem like an apology.

I truly am disgusted by the whole thing to be honest with you. Their reaction, the youtube video, Romney and Obama.....I'm just really easily annoyed lately by all politicians.

Eggshells is what we're gonna have for a while..sm - JTBB

keep in mind a lot of those folks in the middle east have just come out of totalitarian rule. The concept there being their "great"(insert sarcasm) leaders telling them that everything that happens is because of a US conspiracy and that they...the leaders are the only thing keeping the people safe. So these folks have grown up in this environment of not trusting anyone and now all the sudden they're exposed to everything. I just watched a news segment with Richard Engel (?)..he's in Egypt. The question put to him was how do we bridge that gap. His answer was that those folks need education and understanding about the world that they have sorely been lacking. I agree. I guess in the meantime it's gonna have to be kid gloves and bombs.

and a muslim in an Arab country promoted and released the same film in the US with Jesus as the main character. The extreme christians would be burning down every mosque and embassy in the country. What a bunch of hypocrits! Extremists on both sides are at fault here and fanning the flames and pouring gasoline on is doing no one any good.

to put the Muslim Brotherhood in charge, are picked up by foreign right-wing groups looking for evil conspiracies. And then used to fan fear and anger further.

All you have to do is look at our more extreme and angry participants here, and the sort of things they choose to believe, to realize what is happening around the globe.

Sensible, balanced people everywhere need to exercise a greater degree of personal responsibility in the sort of behavior we encourage both verbally and by staying silent in the face of evil.

For Liberal Israelis, Netanyahu's Win Is A Reality CheckMar 21, 2015
Israeli liberals woke up after national elections with a demoralizing feeling: Most of the country, in a deep and possibly irreversible way, does not think like they do. There had been a sense of urgency among moderate Israelis, and even an ounce of hope, that widespread frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's six straight years in office would lead voters to pull Israel away from what they perceive as its rightward march toward international isolation, economic inequality a ...

Interesting Obamacare-inspired TermsAug 08, 2013
There's a couple new terms "29ers" and "49ers": 29ers are folks who once have full-time jobs that are now being cut back to 29 hours a week so the employers can keep their doors open rather than bear the crushing costs of ObamaCare. 49ers are those in companies that used to have a little over 50 employees but have cut back to 49 for the same reason -- to get in under those ObamaCare thresholds. ...
