Would you admit your relative was on a reality show?

Posted: Sep 12, 2010

I happened to be changing channels today and saw one of my relatives on a show on Bravo.  One part of me thought good for her! The other part of me said to keep quiet about it.  Do you know someone whose been on a reality show? Was s/he portrayed true to his/her real character?

Yes, my niece was on The Next Food Network star, and she really is a sweetie, but she doesnt let anyone push her around. The network took that aspect of her personality and ran with it. You know, they have to make someone the villain in order to get the ratings!

Did it bother your niece that they did that or did she expect it?

I love that show but I can tell they edit things specifically for drama.

No, it didnt bother her. - flash

She has a really good attitude and even though she didnt win, the judges all agreed that if the show was about who could actually cook, she would have won hands down!

it was a real housewives show - browsing Bravo channel

I could definetly tell my relative had a lot of input into the script, but they had her do a couple of things uncharachteristic of her to add drama. I still don\'t what to think about it.

OH NO! That housewife show can be really - flash

nasty! You probably have to be willing to do just about anything to get on that show.

Not a relative, but a neighbor of mine and his family was on that "wife swap" show. Why not admit it if you're asked? It's absolutly no reflection on you, and if anything, it's definitely makes for interesting conversation!

It was kind of cool peeking in on the filming taking place in their home.

Not reality, but one of my in-laws has a show. - Don't ask. Won't tell.

The in-law definitely has been known to stir up controversy from time to time, and I'm not always in agreement with the particular point of view that's broadcast, so I don't usually admit to a relationship.

I wouldn't bring up the relative on Bravo out of the blue, but I wouldn't deny it either. It's not you on the program, and it's a fact that your relative was on the program. That's just how it is.

that was how I felt, too - browsing Bravo channel

That's the conflict I feel inside. This relative would create a lot of controversy. On one hand, I am very proud of how she has pulled herself up from rags, but what she does is decidedly controversal.

There is plenty of outrage about this. When will this stuff stop? Is it greed (money) or is it fame? Change.org has a petition going and there's 23,000 people who signed it. There's Sister Wives, Honey Boo-Boo, Toddlers and Tiaras, Buck Wild, the new "Redneck" (from WV), and others to name a few. I certainly think these shows need to go. It degrades the people in these shows and dumbs down our society.    http://www.11alive.com/news/article/271475/40/Former-GA-resident-lead ...

Do You Have A RelativeDec 17, 2013
I bet you do, and you know, with the holidays, you're sure to have to deal with this!  My sister-in-law thinks any subject is fair game for discussion.  Husband's bowel movements, their sex life, their children's sex lives (in morbid detail), my mother's breast lumps (discussed with my husband; why?), pelvic exams, nothing is off limits...did you see We're the Millers?  The woman explaining how she found out she has a shallow vagina?  That's ...

Putting Non-relative On Your Car Insurance For A Jun 26, 2015
Will be visiting my friend soon in another state. I wanted to rent a car but found the cost was much more than I had hoped. I have car insurance, they have car insurance. I called my insurance company yesterday. If I rented a car I would be covered but does not cover me driving another person's car. This is the situation: We wanted to travel to another city in the state and the friend does not want to drive. I on the other hand would be willing to drive. Has anyone ever put another person o ...

Did Anyone Catch The Beck Show? Not His Usual ShowNov 13, 2009
If anyone didn't catch it, I'd encourage you to watch it this weekend.  It wasn't his usual show that everyone hates.  He had an audience (not sure if there were any white people, mostly African-American) and they were talking about issues and problems.  Most of them voted for Obama and they discussed issues going on.  It was very interesting. One guy showed Obama where he grew up in the Harlam and what it was like for him growing up.  It was just a very g ...

AFTA: I Admit It, Obama's Starting To Worry Me On This OneMay 16, 2015
I responded to someone below that the GOP politicians were smarter than people think, very capable of accurately assessing the attitudes and motivations of their constituents. However, I "try" to evaluate all our leaders without blinders, so I have to be fair and wonder - has Obama done that to us left-leaning Independents and Dems, too? Because his lame-duck stuff is starting to worry me. What do other Dems and left leaners think of him trying to fast-track the deal through like this? Whenev ...

Who Needs Reality TVAug 17, 2010
So, I was super excited about getting out of the house for a lunch date with the gals.  I woke up early, showered, shaved the legs, ironed a pretty little low cut dress but found that the sides of my bra strap were sticking out.  Tried on a couple of other bras, nothing was working.  I decided to try a safety pin.  In the process I broke the plastic front closure of the bra.  No biggie, I still have the safety pins out so, pinned that too.  Satisfied with my morning ...

Reality Stars? Really?? SmMar 22, 2011
Was watching Celebrity Apprentice last night- now we are lumping 'reality stars' in with people who actually did something to become famous?  Seriously???  What is that about?  It seems like we have become a society where reality TV seems like it is not real, and stuff that is supposed to be real like politics, the news, etc. is all staged for show now.  I do realize they are scraping the bottom of the barrel this season- it's kind of resembling 'The Surr ...

For Liberal Israelis, Netanyahu's Win Is A Reality CheckMar 21, 2015
Israeli liberals woke up after national elections with a demoralizing feeling: Most of the country, in a deep and possibly irreversible way, does not think like they do. There had been a sense of urgency among moderate Israelis, and even an ounce of hope, that widespread frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's six straight years in office would lead voters to pull Israel away from what they perceive as its rightward march toward international isolation, economic inequality a ...

Froma Harrop: Public Workers Must Join New RealityMar 10, 2011
This was a very good article in Tuesday's paper. Too bad the showdown with public employee unions has come to this. One can be pro-union and still feel a growing resentment at these workers. They aren't to blame. They got what they could, though they overplayed their hand by resisting honest efforts to reform government and schools. Public employees are fighting to keep their old-fashioned defined-benefit plans. Such plans promise to pay a set amount to each qualified retiree. If t ...
