Racism in America 2011

Seems this board is just rife with links to conservative blogs and OPED pieces.  So, here's one to balance out the blather from the TPers and RWers

I am glad you submitted this link. I read it. It was enlightening. Today there was an article in my local paper that described the racism underlying the squawks of those who refuse to accept the legitimacy of the citizenship, and therefore presidency, of President Obama. These so-called "birthers" have the fundamental belief that something is suspicious about a man of African ancestry being the president of the U.S. As the Huffington Post and the article I read in my paper today make clear, the USA is anything but "post racial." Per Human Rights Watch, in 2003 blacks were 12% of the US population. They were 44% of the prison population. Something is wrong with THAT picture. Until the percentages of the unemployed, until those lacking health insurance because they are not hired for the jobs that offer this insurance are equal to the percentages of different racial groups in the population, we are fools to use the expression "post racial." African Americans consistently fare worse than whites in this country. That is a fact.

Freed by a Republican President and given - the vote by a Republican

[ In Reply To ..]
President. Who fought to keep African Americans in chains? Democrats. After a Republican President took the country to war to free them and signed the emancipation proclamation, and gave African Americans the right to vote, but who stood in their way of being able to vote with literacy laws and poll taxes? Democrats. Who started the Ku Klux Klan? Had one in Congress of many years. Remember Sheets Byrd? Democrat. And which party finally got them the complete right to vote in 1965? Republicans finally got majority and enough votes to outvote the Democrats.

Democrats have a over a hundred years of oppression of African Americans and have the GALL to call Republicans racist.

I\'d say shame on you, but that would infer that you actually were capable of feeling it.

totally off the hook - sm

The poster to whom you are responding said not one word about either party.

It is you who made that leap.

What you are not explaining - mbmt

Actually, the majority of Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in both the House and Senate, and President Lyndon Johnson (Democrat)signed them. The vote totals are at the bottom of this post.

There was a huge split in the Democratic Party at that point in history, Northern Democrats and Southern ultra-conservative Democrats. I actually am old enough to remember some of this...Governor George Wallace and the Dixiecrats come to mind. The Southern states were mostly blue during the 60's and now are red states. These Southern Democrats were whackos, so why should I feel shame? Historically, the Democrats were considered to be the conservatives and the Republicans were more liberal. That has definitely changed. Am I implying that Republicans are more racist than Democrats. No, I am not. There are, however, some things I wonder about. If Lincoln was running for the presidency today, would he run on the Republican ticket or the Democratic ticket (seems like he was pretty liberal)? Even though the KKK started off as Democrats, are today's white supremacists (if they vote at all) most likely to identify more with the Republican Party or the Democratic Party?

Civil Rights Act of 1964

House of Representatives:
Democrats for: 152
Democrats against: 96
Republicans for: 138
Republicans against: 34

Senate:
Democrats for: 46
Democrats against: 21
Republicans for: 27
Republicans against: 6

All Southern Democratic senators voted against the act.

Voting Rights Act of 1965

Senate: 77â19
⢠Democrats: 47â17 (73%-27%)
⢠Republicans: 30â2 (94%-6%)
House: 333â85
⢠Democrats: 221â61 (78%-22%)
⢠Republicans: 112â24 (82%-18%)

Yes, and Johnson said, in doing so, "we - are losing the south
[ In Reply To ..]
forever." He meant as a voting block. And how did they replace that voting block? The War on Poverty and entitlements gone mad. That is how they replaced what they lost in the south. They did not care about African Americans at ALL until they got the vote. That is when they became important to the Democrats.

Any ideas or suggestions as to why? - Backwards Typist

You said, "Per Human Rights Watch, in 2003 blacks were 12% of the US population. They were 44% of the prison population. Something is wrong with THAT picture."

I doubt that the 44% are being imprisoned because of their color. I hate to say it, but many are imprisoned because they rape, murder someone, sell drugs, rob people/stores, etc.

Do you have any suggestions or ideas that would lower that percentage? I asking a serious question here.

yes - ideas...

[ In Reply To ..]
I am not the OP, but I have some ideas and suggestions for you.

As you may be aware, crime statistics are historically higher in underprivileged and disadvantated populations.

The fact that 44% of the prison population is African American when they only represent 12% of the US population is an unequivocal indicator of an oppressed, underprivileged sector of the American populace.

The OP didn't say anything about the 44% being imprisoned BECAUSE of their color, only that there was a proportional disconnect in the numbers.

I love the fact that rape figured as number one in your list of crimes, by the way.

That, my dear, is bias - in any color.
Oh, so now I'm not supposed to even ask a serious question - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
without you bashing me? You seem to be saying that those crimes aren't the reason. Can I yell discrimination against you because you're always bashing me?

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have put rape first. Would it have made you feel better if I placed that after murder?

Stop arguing points and start debating instead of bashing everyone who has a different opinion. It's getting sickening....as is YOUR bias.

holy guacamole, BT - ...
[ In Reply To ..]
Of course you can ask a serious question. Just be prepared for serious answers.

You asked for ideas and suggestions regarding the disproportionate number of blacks in jail, and I provided an answer - which you clearly didn't understand!

In no way did I "seem to be saying that those crimes aren't the reason", and I made that clear.

Now, in answer to your other points:

No, you cannot yell discrimination against me: disagreeing with your point of view is not a form of discrmination.

Yes, I would have felt better if murder was first on your list.

Finally, you do boggle my mind with your assertion that I am "always bashing" you or "bashing everyone who has a different opinion".

I challenge you to present evidence of my bashing you. You don't know who I am, and I do not frequent this board.

Let's put critical thinking skills in place. Sorry I upset you.

So sick of this garbage. I work in an office with 15 - whites and 1 black... REVERSE racism

[ In Reply To ..]
has become more of a problem than ever!!! So, it goes both ways. Obama himself has acted racist against white people. He divides this nation. Also, the complaints about the prison issue. HELLO .. WAKE UP! In my area, the stats of crime are extremely higher involving black on white crimes and black on black crimes! They go to prison when they are criminals. Being black or white does not matter. Quit making every problem a black person has a white person's fault. It is simply not true! We will never be united by doing this.

It's So Hard To Talk To White People About RacismDec 01, 2015

Yes, we will develop strong emotionally laden opinions, but they will not be informed ...
