Professors Hours Cut

Posted: Jan 25, 2013

You’re about as likely to find a conservative on America’s university faculties as you are to find Michael Moore at a salad bar. But even in that liberal Valhalla, Obamacare is causing big problems. College professors were some of the biggest Obamacare backers. Many openly promoted it to captive students. But ugly reality is suddenly popping the elite academic bubble. Employers will be forced to provide health coverage to all employees who work over 30 hours a week. 70 percent of college professors work as adjunct professors, not tenured staffers. So the Wall Street Journal reports that all over America, universities are cutting adjunct professors to 29 hours a week to avoid the health care costs. Some complain that with that big pay cut, they can’t afford their own insurance. At least they’ll have plenty of company, since the academics will share the boat their policies created with a lot of newly part-time blue collar workers. Maybe next time, before they endorse a bill nobody’s read, they’ll ask the Economics professor what the word “unaffordable” means.

Huckabee is rude and crude. - lightbulb moment

Besides Huckabee being down in the dirt, I wonder why I cannot locate a direct link at the Wall Street Journal for this report. I know universities have been cutting staff due to overall funding problems. I am surprised this would be the reason for hour reduction since I do not believe this is in effect until 2014. For years unscrupulous employers have been hiring part time employees to get out of paying heath insurance and benefits, so this would be no surprise. However, if there is a need for professors, the schools will have to step up.

Rude and crude, huh? - Compared to whom?

Chris Matthews? LOL!

Strange that you start - badmouthing Huckabee

and say you can't find a direct link to the Wall Street Journal in regards to this. I found it! Didn't take much searching either. It was posted 01/18/2013, and I supplied the link below.

Huckabee is "down in the dirt" as you say, but he is much more honest than you are obviously, just taking every opportunity to bash him when you yourself cannot even substantiate your own claims!

TY for the subscription only link - sm

that is one way to find it, but I hardly think you can fault my research skills for not subscribing to the Murddock fortune.

Huckabee is the one that starts off his article by insulting a fellow US citizen and liberals. Luckily I rarely hear those disgusting commercials anymore about things being rammed down his throat.

And what claim can I not substantiate?

and you start yours off by saying - someone is rude and crude
[ In Reply To ..]
so that is just as insulting as you say he is...which he is just stating his opinion and since it does not agree with yours, he is "down in the dirt." Seems the same could be said of you. If you want to sling mud, look in the mirror first.

you stated that you could not find a link to the article on WSJ. I did, subscription only or not...Others found it, as well, see below. So it is not an article that he pulled out of the blue...it is actually there, if you chooose to look for it before throwing mud at him. What is it about him you don't like...that he is honest and forthright, and actually cares about this country and the direction it is going? or is it the fact that he believes in God?
I dislike that he is rude and crude - sm

It continually surprises me that people who are so "godly" use such horrible language and speak so terribly about others. It makes you wonder about their "godly" honesty.

Apparently the Republicans are having some sort of meeting now where they are discussing how to get people to vote Republican. I guess they think they might have to have some legitimate policies to interest women and minorities instead of just rolliing out some attention every 4 years or so (kinda reminds me of a wayward husband on Valentine's Day). I wonder if they will realize someday that you get more flies with honey and that they need to quit being so rude and crude.

I don't think the Democrats have anything to worry about.

Oh, by the way, his article does nothing for the way I perceive his honesty, or the OPs for that matter. The original article is interesting and a good argument for unionizing.

Thank you to whoever posted the helpful keywords linking to the article. I was on the wrong track from the misleading OP, using keywords such as Huckabee and Obamacare and professors.
Sorry about assuming your subscription-only link - was being elitist

I guess it was just an honest mistake.

The the link I posted below also converted to a subscription-only link. I posted a "solution" lower in the thread if you want to read the article.

Huckabee put a lot of spin on that ball... - link for you

It was a little tricky to find, but the full WSJ article is interesting and far more even-handed than Huckabee's facebook page would have suggested.

Preview: "For decades, colleges and universities have cut costs by hiring adjuncts instead of tenured or tenure-track faculty. In 1975, adjuncts made up 43% of the faculty at U.S. colleges. By 2009, that number had climbed to nearly 70%..."

But, but, but... - cet

This particular cut in professors' hours is solely due to Obamacare. That's his point.

have kept "employees" at part time so as not to have to pay benefits, but the "trend" is growing now what with the onset of Obamacare. Not only are employers reducing full time to part time, they are also eliminating jobs altogether so they don't have to pay the benefits, particularly health care. There are "hiring freezes" all over today's economy, but Huckabee was also trying to point out that Obama received a lot of his campaign "support" from the educational/professor realm, and they voted for him, they supported him, but now because of Obamacare, the very professors who supported him are now finding that what they supported him for is starting to hurt them, as well...making their support of him a bit .... "questionable." THAT is the point.
the article is worth reading. - excerpt...

"As part of the college's decision to lower the cap on the number of classes adjuncts can teach, the administration also raised the pay per class by 2.7% and will start offering a health-care plan that adjuncts can buy through the school, Mr. Hoovler said. The college says the plan should be cheaper than what adjuncts could buy on the open market.

Large employers in the private sector also are examining the cost of insuring more employees. Some companies, particularly restaurant operators, have been moving to cut hours to reduce the number of workers to whom they would be required to offer health insurance. Others are preparing to expand health-benefit offerings to more such employees.

The Department of Health and Human Services doesn't expect the law will have a substantial effect on employment, citing the experience of Massachusetts, which has a similar requirement on the state level, as well as a Congressional Budget Office report on the Affordable Care Act."
My question, Yes, is why you'd believe anything Huckabee - said? He's not an honorable man. nm

You can pull up the article by googling:

"Some Schools Cut Hours of Hard-Pressed Adjuncts to Avoid Rules on Insurance"

(online.wsj.com)

We already have some "professors" living in their - cars due to the same kind of exploitation

[ In Reply To ..]
we ourselves suffer from. Poverty level incomes are typical for many part-time teachers, who try to hold on, gaining experience for their resume, until they can be taken on full-time; most never are.

Degreed and licensed engineers, accountants, and other supposedly professional-level employees are often finding themselves similarly exploited, though wages are usually higher. Part-time and IC work is very common, though, as are long days spent in cubicles that used to be occupied by lower level clerical workers, being pushed to produce more and more profit for their corporations for less and less pay. Some report working in dank unfinished basements and other unbelievable developments (try googling). These day aren't anything like the good old days, when prosperity top to near bottom of the socioeconomic scale was normal.

This entire topic is an example from real life of why Huckabee and his sort should never have been allowed to decide economic policy. Universities pay top people too much and bank excess profits over the cold and occasionally sick bodies of low-level employees people they're busy screwing over.

This is not only morally wrong, it's functionally the path to a third world U.S. Just how far will we go down it? Will we ever turn around and come back to what to being we were so proud of?

ACA Requiring Companies To Provide Insurance To Workers Of 30 Hours Or More Per Week.Jan 14, 2014
I just learned that under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) companies with greater than 50 employees are required to offer insurance to all employees who work an average of 30 or greater hours per week.  My company offers us insurance but you have to meet a production requirement consistently in order to qualify for this, and I know a lot of MTs struggle with this production requirement and therefore even if they work 35-plus hours per week they may not make the production requirement to earn a ...
