Pelosi - pay cut beneath her dignity

Posted: Feb 15, 2013

If Democrats in Congress fail to prevent across-the-board spending cuts (AKA ‘the sequester’) their own $174,000 salary gets trimmed too, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi is offended by the notion. “I don’t think we should do it; I think we should respect the work we do,” Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol. “I think it’s necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded.” I’m confident we can work out a compromise so that Mrs. Pelosi and colleagues aren’t summarily stripped of their dignity. In fact, as representatives of the people, members of Congress ought to share in the blessings of the economic conditions they have fostered. So, here are two suggestions: 1) Peg Congressional pay changes to changes in the median household income — down about 8.24% since 2007 — putting their pay at about $159,663. Of course, if they really wanted to identify with the people, we could set their pay AT the median household level, a cut of roughly $110,000. Members who serve inner-city districts could have their’s set to local rates. 2) If the first option also seems below their dignity, they could be rewarded according to their abilities, by putting them on straight commission, so their income increases with every dime they cut from the federal debt. It’s a ground-floor opportunity, and the sky’s the limit (actually, at $16.5 trillion in debt, the limit stretches above the sky). In any case, I’m sure all Americans share Pelosi’s alarm at this clear and present threat to her dignity, and will proffer even better suggestions for preserving it inviolate. http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2013/02/15/pelosi-pay-cut-for-congress-beneath-their-dignity/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter ;

It's not Newsmax, CNS, Weekly Standard, World Net Daily level of unreliable, but still need to double-check anything from there.

The below is a conservative rag too (which are the only ones making any big deal out of this at this point), but I don't have time to dig for something else right now, and it seems truthful here at least. She's talking about "across-the-board cuts" for "federal employees." And by those on Capitol Hill, I'm guessing she means all the aides and interns and ancillary clerical personal, etc., who make nowhere what members of Congress do. I thought it was very nice and egalitarian of her to include all of them in "we" and speak about their dignity, but of course it's being taken wrong by the right-wing mediasphere. Who are some of them no doubt wondering why the MSM isn't picking up on it. The reason the MSM isn't picking up on it is because what's she's saying is not that big a deal and NOT what the right wing is hearing. Just another manufactured tempest in a teapot.

Q:  Pentagon officials were up here this week already talking about the plans they are making.  If the sequester goes into effect, it also hits Congress.  I'm just wondering how you personally are making plans for your leadership office, your personal offices.  Do you think Members should take a pay cut?  Would you take a pay cut if you had to make up the cuts in your offices?

Leader Pelosi.  Well, as you know, that's why I don't like across‑the‑board cuts because – you used one example, but there are many other examples where an across‑the‑board cut may not make the best sense.  Why should people who work on Capitol Hill pay that price and be treated as Members of Congress are?  It's a hard question to ask me because most of my colleagues are the breadwinners in their families.  A pay cut to me doesn't mean as much.  I mean, I don't think we should do it.  I think we should respect the work we do.  I think it's necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded, but [if there is] an across‑the‑board cut, there's an across‑the‑board cut, that's just the way it is.

Mr. Van Hollen has been a leader, as Mr. Hoyer has, and others, on the impact that this will have on federal employees, including people on Capitol Hill, and I wanted to yield to him to talk about that.

She did post the original article - from PJ Media - in full

I checked. Didn't you bother to read her link? Now you owe HER an apology.
Well, that's the problem when you post junk from junk sources. - It *isn't* the full story

but not so much the poster's "fault," except in the sense of fully believing stuff from places like that.
NO. OP owes us all an apology for searching out - a dishonestly presented version.

NO! Not the OP, but she owes you or anyone else here nothing - Her link is an honest site

Herein lies the problem - you don't like the article so you decide by your own personal reason that it is "dishonest".

PJ Media is a good site to read from.

And also check out The Daily Caller link posted. That's also a conservative site.

PJ Media took the statement *out of context,* cherry-picking in order to further their agenda, not to report honestly. Not a good site, not good journalism.
I was talking about the site - read my post

PJ is a good site to get information from.

I was talking about the site in general. So, was there a slight misinterpretation? No place is perfect. I assure you it was most likely an honest mistake. After all MSNBC has them all the time. Haven't read the daily caller. Will do later.

Again I will re-state. The site is a perfectly legitimate place to read news stories. Nuff said.
"a slight misinterpretation." Wow. It's obvious from your multiple posts - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It's impossible to "respect" the "work" they do when they (especially the Republicas) do nothing but let their hatred for Obama eat them alive, and they're takin' him down. If the country goes in the toilet in the meantime, they don't care.

They're borderline traitors as far as I'm concerned.

[ In Reply To ..]
Perfect!

Actually, she was born into it. BTW, how many friends - from childhood, college, housewifery do you have?

[ In Reply To ..]
She's made and kept friends all her life, people who valued her friendship long, long before anyone had any idea what she would achieve.

If you read up on her, you'd find she stayed home to raise their 5 daughters and only ran for office the first time when her youngest was in high school.

She then went on to become the highest ranking female elected official in U.S. history because she's really, really good at making and keeping friends.

A Pelosi admirer.

She was born into what? - ?

[ In Reply To ..]
Power? Oh. So that explains her uppitiness.
A political family. As a child in Baltimore Pelosi often - sat in the entry hall of her home taking
[ In Reply To ..]
requests from constituents when her dad, the Mayor, was busy with others. In those days, if you had a problem getting a variance or the garbage collectors were leaving mess behind, you went and told the mayor about it, he took care of it for you, and you went home happy and voted to reelect him. :) In this mayor's case, if you wanted to hang around and have dinner with him and his family an extra chair would be pulled up. The door was always open.

It was an interesting upbringing and has a lot to do with her ability to be such an effective speaker. In contrast to the come-to-slay mentality of many conservative congressmen today, she learned how to operate politically by making and keeping friends and finding ways to make cooperation desirable.
She should retire. - Her hot air is depleted
[ In Reply To ..]
and she's lost her "effectiveness." She doesn't even make sense.
Sounds line she was born into - a sense of entitlement.
[ In Reply To ..]
So she's got childhood friends and her family was in politics. Big deal.

What’s Barry’s game? That’s the question many of President Obama’s basketball opponents have asked over the years as Barack hurtled himself around the court in the final minutes of a match. From all accounts he could be a mean, nasty sonofabitch in those final few seconds, especially if his team was losing. The answer to my question is thus self-evident: to win at all costs. That ethos made Obama a very competitive basketball player, and a very effective politician. But it ...
