Obama quotes nonexistent Bible verse in immigration speech

Posted: Dec 10, 2014

While there are plenty of Bible verses to mention while discussing immigration, President Obama on Tuesday quoted one which isn't so great, mainly because it's not real. "The good book says don't throw stones at glass houses, or make sure we're looking at the log in our eye before we are pointing out the moat in other folks eyes," Obama said during a speech in Nashville. One problem, though: The Bible never mentions glass houses.

In addition to his biblical misquote, Obama also tied his immigration policy to the Christmas story, saying, "If we're serious about the Christmas season, now is the time to reflect on those who are strangers in our midst and remember what it was like to be a stranger." This analogy drew conservative ire as opponents of the president's immigration reform noted that Mary and Joseph were actually visiting Joseph's ancestral home.

LOL ... I guess Obama listened to Jeremiah Wright for too long.  Does the Koran mention glass houses?

Illegals are not all widows or fatherless children. I'd say it doesn't apply. Lots of people take the Bible out of context and this is what happened I am sure.

You can just tell he does not read his Bible. I have no doubt he probably reads other religious books, Koran, maybe Budhism, etc. Not the Bible though.

I guess you must not talk about concepts in the bible without quoting it word for word and, of course, you must have the approved Republican version.

then you MUST regard and obey the words of Jesus when he said that there were only TWO commandments we MUST follow: Love the Lord God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself. That covers everything... no war, no torture, no borders, no HATE. Jesus made our relationship with God simple. He's probably face-palming right now saying, "Two simple things. I only asked them to do two simple things. And they can't do it."
The Bible does condone capital punishment, flogging, and monetary - payment for crimes.

Government bears the responsibility to protect the good and punish the evil.

For many years we have been trying to get rid of God in this country and now we are paying the price. It makes me chuckle that people try to use it now.

Did you know the 3 forms of punishment in the Bible are capital punishment, flogging and paying monetary retribution? No prisons.

I don't have a problem with him making references to a well-known mythology. If some pithy Biblical-esque saying conveys the meaning he intends, why not?

And I can certainly see no way in which anyone on the right could complain about such usage - after all, the conservatives and TPRs would love nothing more than to turn this into a Christian caliphate, and make all our laws Bible based.

Heck, some of the less intelligent among them even believe that this already is a Christian nation, despite a complete lack of supporting evidence. That kind of ignorance is frankly terrifying.

Apparently you don't believe in history at all. At least, none with any relevant or factual basis.

Who the founding fathers may or may not have prayed to has nothing to do with the basis of our legal system. Do you know how many times Christ or God are referenced in the Constitution? Exactly zero. Seems an unlikely oversight for the framers if they were basing our legal system on that in the bible.

Certainly we have some things in common with biblical law, such as don't kill, don't steal, etc. But those are not originally biblical in origin. Those are the laws that are necessary for any civilized society, nothing more.

Certainly that was a case of misspeaking on Obama's part - not only did he not get the 'glass houses' quote right, he incorrectly attributed it to the Bible.

However, there is a Bible passage that expresses the exact same sentiment he was trying to convey. Some long-haired hippy said it, as I recall. It goes something like...

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"

That idea is, of course, considered quaint and non-binding by today's conservatives. It occurs to me that I could probably make a decent living collecting small rocks and selling them to TPRs, just for this purpose.

Obama's Incoherent Immigration SpeechNov 22, 2014

First, there was the absolutist language he used to justify his policy -- coupled with restrictions that aren't compatible with such language.
