He may be president now, but Barack Obama says he's a black man who has been mistaken for the valet.
Obama tells People magazine that every black professional male his age has had someone hand over their keys while waiting outside a restaurant. That happened to him, he said.
First lady Michelle Obama says her husband also used to have trouble catching cabs and once was mistaken for a waiter at a black-tie party. She says even when she went to Target as first lady, a fellow shopper asked her to get something from a shelf.
The president says racial relations have gotten better, but more progress is needed.
He says the small indignities they have experienced pale in comparison to young men who have been mistaken for criminals just for being "dressed the way teenagers dress."
This article is laughable. How many of us have also been mistaken for the hired help when out shopping or in other places? I know I have, but I have not carried it on my shoulder like a huge chip which is keeping me down. It will be such a relief when we have a president who is focused on real issues and not absorbed in himself/herself.

I have never heard President Obama talk of the injustices of racism in relation to himself other than when questioned, and, at that I think he was sort of humored by it, somewhat, that someone thought he was a valet.
We all have experienced being dressed a certain way that people have thought we occupied certain positions. Perhaps First Lady Michele Obama was wearing a red top at Target and it wasn't really racial or perhaps she was the tall one in the aisle (which I think is most likely and they obviously didn't recognize her).
I was at the doctor today and a male assistant took me into the room for the opening volley of questions. I assumed he was a resident because he was male. I realized my mistake and it didn't do as much harm as "down-grading" him, I suppose, but he was a nurse. Should that make any difference is another question, but is to the point that we make judgment calls based on race, sex, height, economic background (if we can figure it out), et cetera.
Well, just imagine, being black, a skin color, nothing you can really change in the morning and decide to dress a different part. Imagine that you are frequently thought to play a certain role and think about how many people you encounter that just cannot deal with you occupying positions of authority or management.
We had a black supervisor once. She didn't last long She was considered too outspoken. My take is that if she had been white, her thoughts would have been taken as good and progressive ideas. Not so much with her being black.
The question is racism and people are looking to the president because he appears to be a black man, even more interestingly, having grown up in a white family. I AM ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN he has experienced racism. He probably doesn't want to detail all of the instances he has experienced while growing up, and he has stayed on the light side with being mistaken for a valet and a waiter.

They have avoided the situation and racism has become more socially acceptable, i.e. not hanging blacks from trees and very few crosses burned in front yards and very few people in white hoods.
