Not like father, like son: Celebrities who endorsed Ron Paul aren't sure about his son, Rand

Posted: May 20, 2015

Did any of you know that famously "liberal" celebrities such as Bill Maher actually endorsed Ron Paul in 2012 rather than Barack Obama as they had previously?

The Washington Post article below mentions a few who endorsed Ron Paul, but whom have either "defected" over his son, Rand Paul, or just aren't sure about him yet.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2015/05/20/ron-pauls-celebrity-fans-arent-flocking-to-rand-paul/

Apparently disillusioned with Obama by 2012, Bill Maher chose Ron Paul among the other candidates because as Bill Maher puts it, he was "cut from a different cloth from the rest" of the Republican primary candidates and stated "I love half of him. I love the half of him that has the guts to say we should end the American empire, pull the troops home, stop getting involved in every foreign entanglement."

Bill Maher also very famous called his mostly liberal audience "brainwashed" for booing him over saying so, and not long after that, no more Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect. "

As for me personally, though I didn't vote for Ron Paul, I felt the same way -  I half-agreed with him, especially when he shocked the Republican Party and the nation by pointing out the hypocrisy in the Modern Republican Party, in that they have become pro Big Government themselves, and that he will never vote on new laws that change the constitution, which Republicans (and even the Tea Party itself, now) often try to do themselves, under false pretenses.

In fact, he has voted both against bans on gay-marriage AND legalizing gay marriage. And though personally pro-life due to his own beliefs (and experience as an obstetrician when late-term abortions were still legal), he has emphatically stated that wll vote down any bans on abortion or laws protecting abortion.  He has also very publicly stated on Facebook that "religious freedom law misses the mark on several levels".

Why?  Because again, he doesn't believe the government, neither state nor federal, should have any say in our private lives - period.

He has also gone on record as stating he has not seen enough evidence that Iran is actually building nuclear weapons and agrees with Obama''s approach, but again, does not believe we should entangle ourselves in foreign affairs  as much as we do.

Additionally, he believes drug abuse should be treated as a medical problem and that the war on drugs failed (therefore, drug-testing of food stamp recipients would be a "no no" in Ron Paul's eyes, on about 12 levels).

He also had a very specific plan with steps on how to cut the deficit and government spending that many experts and candidates from both parties have praised since and is still being discussed as possibility.

However, though I agreed that Obamacare failed, I did not care for Ron Paul's curious stance, for an MD, that healthcare "wasn't a right."  I'm pretty sure that falls under promoting our general welfare, as our constitution clearly states.

I also didn't care for his stance on abolishing taxes altogether and the IRS altogether iand hypocritical in and of itself, because again, our constitution clearly states we are to raise g taxes to "provide for the common defense and promote general welfare." So in order to undo taxation, we would have to change the constitution, and this is the biggest reason I didn't vote for him, it's hypocritical.  I think Ron just doesn't want to pay taxes. And that's just is, never underestimate the element of human greed to supercede logic.  Most people will not give to charity privately on their own, if they can buy their 3rd yacht instead and show it off.

However, he was the last great hope of the Republican Party, and now it's gone.

Because Rand Paul?

Well, let's just say he ain't his daddy.

In fact, according to his father's definition, though Rand can surprise you?  He more closely fits being another modern Republican.

Because since his father has gone on record stating he hasn't seen enough evidence that Iran is building nuclear weapons, this puts him in direct odds with his son, Rand, whose signature was very clearly on the infamous Senators letter to Iraq, attempting to gain Congressional sovereignty over the president themselves and meddle in foreign affairs and control.

Rand Paul has also openly discussed his religious views (though he did remain silent on religious freedom law), and has stated he would supports antiabortion laws and banning gay marriage laws as being unconstitutional (unlike his father, who believes that any law, for or against these things, should never come to vote or legislation because they're not  the government's business).

So unfortunately, though I didn't agree with him entirely, it's pretty clear though Ron Paul was brilliant thinker, who actually understood the concept of "no government involvement" - state or federal .  "No government involvement" means exactly that, the government should stay out of our personal lives - with us not just giving lip service to small government, then turn around and try to pass laws that suit  our own personal interests anyway.

Unfortunately, his son just doesn't get it :/

but I definitely judge him on an issue by issue basis, and overall do not trust him. His father had a certain appeal, at least in the honest pursuit of his goals. I still would have vigorously participate in campaign against him and definitely will oppose Rand if he is the Republican candidate (doubt).

That's true. I guess I don't trust him because he backpeddles so much. - The Anon Formerly Known as Julia Sugarbaker

I will choose to believe, for now, that maybe the reason for the inconsistency is that he's now being advised by his Dad rather than the likes of Ted Cruz, instead of just flat out being a chameleon to gain votes.

I've mentioned positives about him before (he IS responsive, if you write him), but I admit, my opinion is also largely influenced by the fact that he has the reputation of treating women pretty badly professionally in Kentucky. (Heard that from people I trust who've worked with him in a clinical setting, even before he was a in politics)

It's observation time for him, but I think the fact that he is so inconsistent is proof enough that he's just not ready to be president, if nothing else.

Are there any MTs from Kentucky out there who have any personal knowledge or stories they can share? Is Rand Paul well liked in your state? McCain, Graham Blast Rand PaulMar 07, 2013
McCain quoted heavily from a Wall Street Journal editorial that slammed Paul’s filibuster on the Obama Administration’s drone use, including a line that said “If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in college dorms.” McCain called Paul’s concern that the government could kill any American with a drone “totally unfounded.”  Graham also chided his fellow Re ...

Rand Paul Is Wrong. What Trump Did Is Distinctly NOTApr 08, 2017
More than 125 times in our history, Presidents (including in recent times Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama and Trump) have taken military actions without the approval of Congress.  Obama is an interesting case in point.  He sought approval from Congress to launch attacks in Libya, failed to get it and then launched the attacks anyway, arguing that he had the Constitutional and legal authority to do so (which he did).  Two years later, after the chemical attacks in Syria, Obama's ...
