standard of living because they had the courage to organize and stand up for themselves. In 30 years their pay went from $5 an hour (with experience) to $20-30 an hour and up under unionization. Now even LPNs and nurses aides pay has dramatically increased. I know, I was there once upon a time when hospital management was trying to crush our organizing efforts.

Salaries for nurses did increase, but one can hardly attribute that to the efforts of a small union. It was largely due to the confluence of flush healthcare providers and nursing shortages, which are simply economic entities.

So, with the unionization of some nurses (which has, by the way, stalled), things ought to be even better now, right?

During the recession, the initial trend in estimated annual staff nurse salaries was an increase in both current dollar and inflation-adjusted amounts. The pattern right now, however, is not bright. Total hospital employment has been flat throughout 2014. There have been absolute quarter-to-quarter declines in inflation-adjusted wages in 11 out of 22 quarters since December 2008.

In fact, the news is even worse. Average inflation-adjusted hospital staff RN wages not only are declining, but they are declining faster than those of many other occupations in other industries including both others in general health care and social assistance and others in hospitals. From June 2009 (the official end of the recession) to June 2014, current dollar hospital RN total compensation increased by 8.5%, with wages increasing by 7.3% and fringe benefits increasing by 11.2%. Over that same timeframe, the cost of living increased by 10.5% (U.S. Department of Labor, 2014c). Therefore, real compensation fell. On the other hand, some other industries and occupations beat inflation (U.S. Department of Labor, 2014d)."

Facts are such inconvenient things that we might forgive those who don't bother to research a subject before they blather about it. I say we might forgive them, but no, I don't think we really should.

During the recession, most people have suffered stagnant wages, but their's went up. Good for them.

How many MTs make less than they did at the beginning of the recession? I wish we had a union.

The recession didn't affect all sectors of the economy equally. - ...and what about unions that agitate...
