Looking to 2016....

Posted: Nov 11, 2012

Name three democrats and three republicans you would like to see run for President - not necessarily who you think will run, but who you would like to see run.

Republican - Marco Rubio, Allen West, and John Kasich.  I'd love to see Condoleeza Rice run, but I still think the US isn't ready for a female president.

Democrat - Dennis Kucinich, Evan Bayh, and Arne Duncan.  Hillary Clinton is another pick for me, but again, I don't think she'd get the nomination because of her gender.

;

I don't think the US is ready for Dennis Kucinich!!! - bootstraps

I think Republicans would prefer Rice over West. He's too much of a loose cannon and would definitely not be popular among Independants or Moderate Republicans. Just my opinion, but I do think the Republicans will try to put in someone who appeals to the changing demographics, and I don't mean in the form of tokenism. I think Rubio will definitely be on the short list.

Believe it or not, I really haven't thouht about the Democratic ticket. I like Charlie Crist, but I don't know if he's presidential material. I do think Obama will put him to work during his term, though.

It should definitely be an interesting election cycle considering both parties will be thrust into the primary scene.

I'm also looking forward to see if Ashley Judd is going to challenge Mitch McConnel in 2014. Or who, if anyone will challenge him.

Why no Jeb on your list?

LOL!! I think that goes without saying :) - ZvilleMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I like Jeb, but I think we're done with the Bush family as presidents :)

Charlie Christ is a good one - didn't even think about him!

I'm sure the political climate will change in the next four years, as will the lists of those thinking about running, but I just thought it would be fun to see if anyone had any favorites right now.

Jeb - bootstraps

[ In Reply To ..]
I think the Republicans might give Jeb a chance. Personally, as a Democrat, I might be a little and maybe a lot frightened if he was running.

I don't know if I'm looking at him in the shadow of current gov of FL, Rick Scott, but he wasn't that bad as FL Gov (in the eyes of a lib dem lol). But he put money in my pocket, so I do have a soft spot for him.

My daughter was attending a community college during his governorship on a Bright Futures 75% scholarship. She was accepted to 2 state universities, but she preferred the diversity of the community college and emphasis on education rather than sports.

Right before she entered her freshman year, Jeb said that anyone attending a community college on a 75% scholarship, would be raised to 100%. It was an incentive to attract more students to community colleges. So, he put a major amount of real cash in my pocket.

There are a lot of people in Florida who really like Jeb, even Democrats.

Awesome question! Looking forward to reading other responses. :-)
This Democrat would probably vote for Jeb - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I lived in Florida when he was governor and thought he was awesome. He's a lot smarter than his brother, that's for sure. The last time I voted for a Republican was for his father after Reagan. Since Reagan/Bush, the Pubs haven't come up with a decent candidate since. First we get that obnoxious Bob Dole, then Dubbya, then a senile senator and his Alaskan cheerleader, and then a cult leader. If the Pubs want to win another election, they really need to get serious.

I don't think there will be a 2016 - annieb - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I seriously do not believe there will be a 2016. Between the news of Nibiru, the civil war on the verge because of voter fraud, the division in so many people thanks to our politicians. It's hard to imagine 2016. The division in this country is so far gone and people just don't want to work together. They have the "my way or the highway" attitude.

If we do make it to another election I would like to see neither party. I've always wanted individuals to run on their accomplishments. Not a party.

If I had no other choice and had to vote one or the other, my choices would be:

Republican: Mitch Daniels, Allen West, Ron Paul.

Democrat: I actually cannot think of any. I've sat here for a long time thinking about democrats I've listened to in congress and none of them hit me as anyone I would want as president. Maybe Evan Bayh.

My feelings about Hillary are totally different. I have to say the thought of "her" as president makes me cringe and my hair stand on end. She was one of the worst first ladies, mean streak, the way she talked to staff and her security guards I would have walked out and found another job. The way she talked to Bill with little respect. Everything for her is planned. She's not a sincere person and cares nothing about anyone but herself. She has been one of the worst SOS, unqualified for the position and made things a mess. Her words of laughing about killing Ghadaffi (no matter how horrible a person anyone believes he was) was so outrageously offended. I prayed for the Presidents safety after I heard that as words like what she said (while laughing about it), is usually want sets off people in their country.

I disagree in that I think the country is ready for a women president. If its the right women. To me Hillary is not. I voted for Obama to keep her out. As a women she offends me. While some people think Obama is bad (far left), Hillary outdoes him ten-fold. Her ideations and upbringing, everything she believes in is socialism. The came out and stated she thinks our country should be like Venezuela. She's also a pathological liar and just not someone I would ever want to be in that position. She would not know what to do when the call came. Also someone outright lying to make herself look more important telling us she arrived in some country and was under fire and had to duck to dodge the bullets. Everything she said in the campaign was a lie and as we all know what it's like to have a president that lies to you personally I believe she would be the wrong person for the job.

Democracy lasting until 2016 - bootstraps

[ In Reply To ..]
I think our elected officials should resolve to working together rather than not, and have that message disseminated throughout the electorate by compromise and common sense.

I do believe that the powers that be in the Republican party, going forward to 2016 are looking forward to putting up a viable candidate who is attractive to all Americans.

It's my opinion, and only that, the right wing arm of the Republican party will be insignificant and muted after the 2014 mid term election. West, Daniels, Paul will not be on any list in 2016.

Having said that, I would welcome them as contenders because chances are they would meet a worse fate than Romney. But unfortunately for Dems, I think Republicans will make a wiser and more competitive choice.

I know you disgree and I respect that, but I don't see extremism on either side attracting voters. The Republicans nominating any of the 3 you mentioned would be like the Dems nominating Kucinich.

I'm no expert, but I think the Republicans are in the process of fashioning a new face and a new body for their party.

No one likes to be labeled as a taker just because they voted Democratic or because they didn't vote Republican. Celebrities obviously are free to continue to carry that message, but it might not be to the Republican Party's advantage if they continue to validate same.

I meant to ask you this from your previous post, but what's wrong with Kucinich?
Kucinich - bootstraps

He's too liberal. Not for me, of course, ;-) But even if he made it as a presidential candidate, he's just a wee bit too far left to appeal to a broad electorate IMO.

I kinda like him - does that mean I might be a subconscious liberal?? LOL:)

of hot air (civil war requires massive arming, forming of troops, etc.)

Hillary you will have to worry about for a while; but on the plus side for you, she's getting old for a run for the presidency. She'll be, what, 69? FWIW, she'll also have grandchildren and family, and, like a number of other women in high office, she may choose to retire to enjoy them.

Did you know that Hillary grew up in a very republican - sm

"Growing Up Rodham
By Sally Jenkins
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 9, 2007

Back then, chicken a la cheese won recipe contests, and an Amana Free-o-Frost was the answer to every woman's problems. Hugh Rodham woke up each morning in his thick-walled suburban dream home in Park Ridge, Ill., bellowing the songs of Mitch Miller and the Gang (Singalong favorites! "Ain't We Got Fun"!), and sat down each night to dinner served exactly at 6 p.m., over which he issued loud pronouncements about American self-reliance, as opposed to communists and deadbeats seeking handouts. That's when the argument would start. "Now, wait a minute," his wife, Dorothy Rodham, would suggest, voice soft as a housedress. "Sometimes things happen to people that they have no control over." Their daughter, Hillary, would follow the conversation, alternately agreeing with each, until Hugh had the last word. Fathers were the ultimate authority then. Fathers, and presidents.

It's safe to say that the dinner debate at 235 Wisner St. was never resolved for Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I think it was part of the balance I created in my own life, it became a balancing of all my different influences and values," she says, describing in a recent interview the way her father's conservatism shaped her. "A lot was worth admiring in the sense of rugged individualism. But it didn't explain enough for me about the world, or the world as I would want it to be."

It's a self-analysis that won't satisfy critics who accuse her of being a political chameleon, with views calculated and never quite fixed. Nevertheless, there was an original Hillary, before she was so heavily coated by perception: a girl reared in a conventional postwar middle-class hamlet who, according to her youth pastor, Don Jones, was "controlled and circumspect" even then. She was the conciliator of the "push and tug" of her parents' differences, and she clung to centrism even during the '60s as her teachers in Park Ridge engaged in a conservative-vs.-liberal duel for her "mind and soul," she writes in her memoir, "Living History."

"It's that Midwestern thing, cheesy or all-encompassing as that sounds," says her oldest friend, Betsy Ebeling. "You can't remove it from her fabric. . . . She's triangulated, if you will."

"My father really was an old-fashioned conservative with a small 'c,' " Clinton says. "He believed in hard work, and that everyone had to do their part and be willing to take responsibility."

I could not agree more. I don't see either party changing in any significant way. I would like to see someone who is fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

These candidates are out there, but - sm

they can't compete financially with the Rs & Ds, so they don't even get appointed.

I'd love a CHANGE in the law that stated all candidates are only allowed to use $1 million for their campaign, and they're only allowed to campaign starting 3 months prior to the election. They can't use their own money, they can't use party money, they can't use donated money/goods. They'll only be allowed to use the $1 million in tax funds that's already currently set aside for presidential candidates. Also, the main TV networks will be required by law to allow each candidate a reasonable set amount of free air time (i.e. commercials) to get their message to the people during those 3 months.

THIS would give more qualified candidates a chance for presidency AND finally give the voters an actual choice, instead of an obligation to pick the "lesser of 2 evils."
i don't think candidate should be allowed to use taxpayer money - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
money from the government. That's our money that could go to something else.

Do you really want money from the government to help fund the opposite party candidate?

I think there should be a limit on the donations to a candidate and I think the candidate's party should be able to donate a limited amount of money, too.

Other than that, I definitely agree that the campaigns should be limited to a set amount of time and there should be a set amount of ads allowed. SuperPAC ads should be banned completely. They are usually lies anyway.
Agree with you all the way. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
I would love to see that happen.
The $1 million is already in place. The problem is... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
the donated and the party money that they're spending in addition to the $1 million. Candidates support whoever gives them the most money, and that's the rich, not the poor, even though it's the poor who are keeping America running.

Right now, candidates are spending millions on their campaigns, and the Average Joe candidate who's totally qualified but who isn't backed by a party or multi-millionaires and doesn't have millions of his/her own money to spend does't stand a chance.

There are always independent candidates who try to run, but because they're not backed by the super rich and either the Rs or the Ds, they don't even get to the ballot... mainly because no one even knows they exist.

The $1 million from the taxpayers is unbiased money given to the candidates equally, and if that's all they have to spend, then the candidates will have to be smarter about how they spend their money and will have to use their limited free air time more wisely and will have to work harder to earn our votes.

Just heard prediction there could be as many as 21 Republican candidates.  I wonder how bad they are going to tear into one another.  This has, in the past, made it very difficult for the candidate to recover from some of the accusations.  Of course, depends on the accusation. On the other side, Democrats, with 2, not as certain there will be more.  I think Sanders will argue on the issues.  I think Clinton will give thought to the those issues/accusations and answer.&n ...
