Large Portion of GOP Thinks Obama Is Racist, Socialist, Non-U.S. Citizen

Posted: Feb 2, 2010

If this is true, it's certainly sad for America. I don't know how our President stays focused knowing people think he is a non-U.S. citizen, racist, etc. Some are even praying for his death.

A new poll of more than 2,000 self-identified Republican voters illustrates the incredible paranoia enveloping the party and the intense pressure drawing lawmakers further and further away from political moderation.

The numbers speak for themselves -- a large portion of GOP voters think that President Obama is racist, socialist or a non-US citizen -- though, when considering them, it is important to note that a disproportionate percentage of respondents are from GOP strongholds in the South (42 percent) as opposed to the Northeast (11 percent). Also note that this is a poll of self-identified Republicans, which means that independent Tea Party types are not included.

Nevertheless here are some of the standout figures as provided by Daily Kos/Research 2000:

  • 39 percent of Republicans believe Obama should be impeached, 29 percent are not sure, 32 percent said he should not be voted out of office.
  • 36 percent of Republicans believe Obama was not born in the United States, 22 percent are not sure, 42 percent think he is a natural citizen.
  • 31 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a "Racist who hates White people" -- the description once adopted by Fox News's Glenn Beck. 33 percent were not sure, and 36 percent said he was not a racist.
  • 63 percent of Republicans think Obama is a socialist, 16 percent are not sure, 21 percent say he is not
  • 24 percent of Republicans believe Obama wants "the terrorists to win," 33 percent aren't sure, 43 percent said he did not want the terrorist to win.
  • 21 percent of Republicans believe ACORN stole the 2008 election, 55 percent are not sure, 24 percent said the community organizing group did not steal the election.
  • 23 percent of Republicans believe that their state should secede from the United States, 19 percent aren't sure, 58 percent said no.
  • 53 percent of Republicans said they believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama.
During his appearance at the House Republican retreat last Friday, Obama explained that it was hard to forge bipartisan consensus when lawmakers were trashing his health care bill as a "Bolshevik plot". These poll numbers show that the gulf preventing bipartisan consensus extends well beyond health care. How does a Republican lawmaker explain to his or her die-hard base that it is important to work on legislation with a racist, socialist president who is illegally holding office only because of the help of ACORN?

"This is why it's becoming impossible for elected Republicans to work with Democrats to improve our country," said Markos Moulitsas, founder and publisher of Daily Kos. "They are a party beholden to conspiracy theorists who don't even believe Obama was born in the United States, and already want to impeach him despite a glaring lack of scandal or wrongdoing. They think Obama is racist against white people and the second coming of Lenin. And if any of them stray and decide to do the right thing and try to work in a bipartisan fashion, they suffer primaries and attacks. Given what their base demands -- and this poll illustrates them perfectly -- it's no wonder the GOP is the party of no."

high of a percentage of ignorant people in this modern day . . . . sad. Kind of reminds me of the craziness that brought about the witch trials in 1600's Salem, Mass.

Even more embarrassing for GOP moderate centrists - Hope theyre not a dying breed....

They seem outnumbered by right-wing retrogressives bringing up their rears. Pretty sad state of affairs.

The trend is sort or interesting, thougn. Liberals on the left feel isolated from the democratic base because of moderate policies they feel do not go far enough. The opposite is happening to GOP moderates who have no representation because of their radical far wing factions. I think the two-party system is becoming an anachronism and it's just a matter of time before it falls apart all together. Might just be for the best.

Not much to do but shake my head and fear for the future Just want to take a section of the poll and make a comment. The 53% of the Republicans who think Palin would make a better anything absolutely deserve her. The only thing is, the rest of us would have to pay dearly for her.

We are ALL paying dearly for Obama now. - Could not be much worse.nm

The 53% of the republicans don't have the absolute hatred for her the other percentage does. A better "anything"???? How about a title here. She was going for Vice President, and yes she would have made a better VP than what is in there now. I wish there had been another candidate than her and McCain. Anyone could have won against them and that is what happened. You all deserve what you voted for knowing everything about him. The only thing is the rest of us are having to pay dearly his mistakes.

Still not over the 2008 mandate for change? - Try harder. nm

I was all for a change for the good. We did not get that. But since I didn't vote there is nothing for me to get over. I didn't want any of them.

You know whenever someone disagrees and doesn't like the policies it doesn't mean they are "not over it".

Ya might want to try a new line.

and felt the candidates were weak, you managed to tip your hat to Palin while taking a jab a Biden, bite Obama, tell his supporters off and clearly placed youself on the other side of the fence from him and them. Still sounds to me that you're not over it yet.
I did no such thing. Please stick to the facts - and not make things up - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are going to assume/accuse you should at least show the quotes. I don't care for Palin but I certainly don't "vehemently hate" her like some posters do. I guess in your mind because I'm not bashing her I support her????? Where you come up with that I have no idea.

You are still fabricating things. NO WHERE IN UNCERTAIN TERMS DID I EVER "bite Obama, tell his supporters off", etc.

Get your facts straight before accusing someone of something they did not do!!!! And please do not ASSUMe.

Your love affair with Obama is showing. Don't accuse me of something I did not do!!!
Correction... meant to type ASSUME in all one case. - would hate to be accused you know
[ In Reply To ..]
Even though we know what happens when people assume things.
And I did not "take a jab at Biden" either - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I wrote the previous message because you accused me of things and it just made me mad that you did that to me, when you have no facts and wouldn't even put in quotes what you think I said to lead you to say that. I guess you think that because I'm not out bashing Palin in full swing that I support her? The jab at Biden I have no idea what your talking about and the words "bite Obama and tell his supporters off" are clearly offensive to me since I did not do that. Yes, I didn't vote because I didn't like any of the choices, but I certainly don't like being accused of something I did not do. That's enough to make anyone angry.

And since I did not vote for any of them, didn't like any of them I don't understand where you get the "your not over it". There is NOTHING to get over. Why can't you understand that. That line is getting very old. There is a lot of stuff this administration is doing that the people of the country do not like, but it doesn't mean they haven't "gotten over it". That line is about as old and outdated as calling someone a racist simply because they did not vote for Obama.

You really do need to get a new line, and of course not accuse people of things they don't do.

Thank you.

I've always had the opinion that if you don't vote, you don't get to whine about the results of the election.

You didn't bother to vote.

That's rich. Just too funny. Biggest whiner on the board did not vote.

All the more reason not to bother reading your posts.

1. That is your own opinion about voting. I am a citizen of the United States and I have the rights of every American citizen to be concerned, alarmed, or happy about what is going on in politics. Just because someone does not vote does not take away that right to have or voice an opinion.

2. No I didn't vote. It's called having a mind of my own and making an intelligent decision. When there are no good candidates why in the world would anyone want to just take a stab in the dark and vote. And I'll say for those of you who voted for your Lord Obama....you deserve everything you get. Unfortunately the rest of the country does not deserve this.

3. Before you start calling someone a whiner you should realize that there are several people replying with the moniker of anon. In fact I see some people with anon replying to others with anon. Even the monitor of this board has told people before not to assume there is only one person with the same moniker. But then again you usually do just assume. Now that's what I call rich.

4. You don't get to decide whether people should bother reading anyone's posts. Everyone can make their own decisions, and you have just proven why I don't read yours. You whine about Bush, blame Bush for everything, don't take responsibility for your own parties mistakes and failures. Yeah, that's rich alright.

Newsflash - I stopped reading your posts a long time ago. I gained back my sanity once I did.

Another newsflash - go ahead and respond I will not read it.

One of Obama's mistakes - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
I think Obama (and the Democratic Party) has overestimated the intelligence of the general American public. Obama and the dems expect to be able to win debates through reason when a large percentage of the American public gets more fired up by rhetoric, buzzwords, and hyperbole than by boring facts.

We saw it in the last administration when 9/11 and Iraq were mentioned together over and over again. The result? A large percentage of Americans thought there was a link between Saddam and 9/11.

The Republican tactics are now based on the example above. Repeat something often enough and stridently enough, and people will believe you. Critical thinking skills are sadly lacking. They made it work before; they are making it work today.

It's a sad commentary on J. Q. Public. I hope moderate Republicans let their party know how insulting it is to be treated so.

I'd like to see how the dems and independents answered this poll.

I can see which side the Kos is on.

Why do you suppose that is? They took a snapshot of - the radicalization of the GOP...

[ In Reply To ..]
Dems and Indies can't define the GOP NEARLY as well as they can define themselves. Their input would have only skewed the results.

Why poll was commissioned - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
KOS commissioned the poll from an independent polling company to show democrats how republicans were thinking. It is a profile of the enemy, so to speak.

I take it from your defense reaction that you agree there is a lot of stupidity showing through in that poll?

Self-identified republicans - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder about them. So many people are now distancing themselves from the republican party. Could it be that those still admitting to being republican are mostly the fringe? And the moderates are either calling themselves independent or just not saying out loud that they are republican?

I'd rather think that then think the whole party believes all that nuttiness.

NJ

And most people are jumping ship from the both parties - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually though we see more and more people distancing themselves from democrat party more than the republican. But many people are distancing themselves from both parties. Both parties have failed the people. You can't honestly protect one side and find no fault with them, when they are losing elections left and right because they do not look out for the people they are supposed to represent.

I don't think anyone is on the fringe. I think whether you are democrat or republican there comes a time where you realize both parties are failing. People need to be independent and think for themselves and not buy into the lies both parties are spewing.

I consider myself independent with more conservative viewpoints on economy, military, and security, and liberal viewpoints on gay issues, religion, and abortion would rather think for myself then buy into the lies each party is handing out. And I don't defend one party to the grave while demonizing the other.
