Just heard Assad is doing interview with Charlie Rose

Posted: Sep 8, 2013

Apparently it's being taped today and will air tomorrow night.  I checked my guide and Charlie Rose is on PBS, but the earliest time I found was 11 p.m.  I don't know if his show is on another channel earlier?  If anyone finds out anything else, please post.

Thanks. Had not heard about that interview. I would like to see it. His show is on at midnight in my area. If anyone misses it, we should be able to view it on his website, though.

Assad on Charlie Rose - PBS

I work for PBS (in addition to being an MT part-time). I checked our local station's website and see nothing about Assad being interviewed by Charlie Rose. Maybe it has come up so recently that it's not noted yet. Anyway, you can check your local PBS website and go in under "TV schedules" then in the search bar type "Charlie Rose." You'll see the upcoming episode guests. But, like I said, there's nothing about this on our local station yet.

Assad on Charlie Rose...found it - PBS

Addendum to my previous post....I found the information about the interview on HuffPost. You can email or call your nearest PBS station to find out if it will be re-broadcast after the initial airing. Here's what I found on HuffPost:

CBS News' Bob Schieffer announced the news on "Face the Nation" Sunday. The full interview will air on the "Charlie Rose Show" Monday night — the same day as President Obama's recorded interviews with six networks. Portions of the interview will also air on Monday's "CBS This Morning," and other platforms across CBS News.

Get ready for an earful of propaganda and lies. - Syria's state owned TV broadcasts

under Hafez Assad was the first huge difference between here and there I noticed when I lived there with my in-laws back in the early 80s. Programming consisted of 3 hours of soap operas in the morning which were repeated in the evening. This was the one bone the dictator threw out to the masses, since everyone was addicted to those soaps, adored by men and women alike.

The remaining time was split between SANA newscasts and televised military infomercial-type programming. SANA stands for Syrian Arab News Agency, which the locals called Syrian Assad News Agency, since 100% of the verbal content comes directly from the information office at the presidential palace. According to link #1, that has not changed a bit, despite the rapid evolution of broadcast media since that time and the explosion of potential electronic alternate media sources. The military infomercials consisted of historical programming, focused on victorious military campaigns that emphasized the strength and might of the Syrian military, biographies of military commanders, other high-ranking personnel and rank-and-file heroes/martyrs, ceremonies, marches, parades, educational pieces about various types of weapons and materials, etc. As soon as the soaps were over and with the first appearance of either news or military programming, Syrians turned off their TVs and went about their daily business.

This is not to say the Assads have not learned to marshal 21st century electronic media and use it to their advantage. This is a privilege they choose not to share with the public, whose internet usage is closely monitored. Internet censorship is extensive in Syria. People who gain access to otherwise banned websites are subject to arrest. A Facebook ban has proven to be somewhat ineffective since folks have been able to circumvent the ban with proxies. In 2011, they gave up on trying to filter YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

An OpenNet Initiative study (link #2) found pervasive filtering of political content and internet tools, and selective filtering of social, conflict and security content. Arabic Wikipedia was blocked for 10 months in 2008-2009. Connectivity to the outside world has been interrupted for long periods of time, especially since the civil war. They don't stop there. They also jam mobile phones, land lines, and electricity.

Assad has weaponized the internet as well with the use of various malware, Trojan and phishing devices in attacks on anyone he thinks belongs to the opposition. He even has a Syrian Electronic Army of hackers that use methods such as denial of service and defacement when they launch attacks on the opposition. Among those defaced sites are BBC News, AP, NPR, Al Jazeera, Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, Al-Arabia TV, and Human Rights Watch. The SEA hacked AP Twitter and erased $136 billion from stock exchanges and made electronic bomb threats against the White House (link #3). They sent out fake texts claiming Qatar's PM and his wife had been the target of an assassination attempt. The list goes on and on.

Of note, Assad hired a US PR firm ( Brown Lloyd James) as his advisers (link #4) to his all-important propaganda campaign. While I understand why Charlie Rose would want to conduct one of the extremely rare interviews Assad grants to Western press, I find the idea of facilitating this man in gleefully spreading his deceit and lies around to a large international audience to be troubling. That he has even agreed to an interview makes anyone who is familiar with the Assads tactics wonder just what his hidden agenda is this time around.

but I never forget public figures always come on with an agenda. DH always thinks they "should answer the question," and I always remind him that's not what even honest, admirable politicians are there to do. :)

Wow! - You know what you're talking about.

This is very informative. Thank you. Are you afraid that Assad will find out who and where you are, though? Are your in-laws still over there?

On the question of my in-laws - and their fate

[ In Reply To ..]
it is impossible to know for sure. It's been years since I divorced from that family, and I have lost contact with my ex. The parents I remember, who were in their mid-40s then are now elders. The brothers- and sister-in-law have most likely long since married and have their own lives now, though it is hard for me to imagine any of them moving far from the parents. They were in the final stages of building a second floor addition to their home, completed with several bedrooms, kitchen and bath, intended to give any of their kids the option of continued residence under that roof, where they could enjoy being closely involved in raising their grandchildren. I feel certain at least one of them chose to do that, probably one of the brothers, since the marriage custom there involves the wives becoming part of their husband's family, though they retain the last name of their birth family. Their dream to enjoy helping raise their grandchildren no doubt has been shattered.

I am sure the brothers (3) all served in the compulsory military, and suspect at least one of them, who was anxious to leave the village, probably made a career of that, as he often voiced that desire. I also think the other two and the sister (1) stayed in the village close to their parents and the family farming property that provided a decent income. They also owned stores in the bazaar.

I fear for their safety since the town itself had a history of harboring political refugees and sheltering opponents of the government and repressed minorities (Christians, and social "outcasts"). I remember one couple in particular who were party to a "mixed marriage" between an Alawite wife and Sunni husband. They had fled the scorn of their families and were hiding out in that village. The residents welcomed such newcomers.

Many bazaar shopkeepers (my family included) stashed large caches of black market weapons, mostly rifles and pistols, but some assault weapons we well, which they bought and sold to supplement their incomes. I have accessed many videos from that village that show initial protest demonstrations, clandestine interviews between villagers and western press agents, and numerous skirmishes between rebel sympathizer and Syrian military families within the village as well as frequent Syrian forces "tank parades" up and down the main road. This was not new to me, since I had witnessed that kind of activity when I lived there.

Later on in the conflict, the videos came in showing heavy shelling, casualties, carnage and funerals from that location. Eventually, the rebels seized control of Madaya. The ones that disturb me the most were slaughter of whole families or of women and children, carried out while the men were down in the valley working the fields. Current conditions would be difficult for the family elders and their grandchildren to navigate. There is virtually little to no land line phone service, intermittent cell phone connections, daily rolling brown-outs of electrical services and school closures. Food supplies are pretty much confined to those produced locally, which I am sure has made the prices of everything go up.

On the other hand, it is impossible to imagine the elders packing up and leaving for refugee camps, though the possibility of crossing over into Lebanon certainly is feasible, since the village was only 5 miles from the Syrian border with Lebanon in Bekaa Valley. Still, the conditions of refugees there are deplorable and the refugee crisis is so pronounced, it is creating LEBANESE refugees, eager to flee the overcrowded conditions and MB violence that has spilled over into Lebanon.

I do transport dispatch for a Lebanese OTR driver based in Riverside CA (stopped transcribing when line rates went below 8cpl). He emigrated from Tripoli years ago to come to the US to get his degree, married a Lebanese woman and had two daughters, ages 9 and 11. His wife and daughters had been living in Tripoli for the past 3 years, becoming acquainted with their extended families (uncles, aunts, cousins, maternal and paternal grandparents). The girls attended primary school there and learned how to speak Arabic and French in addition to English. They would see each other once a year for a 1-2 month holiday. He just told me he has sent his family plane tickets to bring them back to CA, since the mosque bombing in Tripoli a few weeks ago hit ONE MILE from his home there. One of the neighbors was killed in the blast and several others were injured.

He tells me, despite all the chaos, how much they are hoping for some sort of US intervention, though they are not placing much faith in a political solution in the Middle East anytime soon. His simple, boiled-down statement on the whole thing is that he believes the various governments will go though various phases of rejecting theocracies in the future, much in the same way they are now rejecting Western-backed dictators who have been in power so long. For him, it is an inevitable step they all must take in one form or another, until they "figure out" what to do with their elusive aspirations for democratic freedoms and how to handle them once they have them.

For me, I honestly believe that several of the family and/or friends I had there are dead, injured or displaced. According to friends I have here, that has become the "norm" for Syrians of late.
Your in-laws' town sounds admirable. How sad that - such decency would make it a primary target.
[ In Reply To ..]
Hopefully those who were your family are subsisting somehow in Lebanon, or even had stockpiled the means to go elsewhere... I wonder about the brother who grew up in such a culture and may have been in the military when things exploded.

Your Lebanese driver sounds like a man without illusions who still is able to retain hope and belief in a good future. It's a grim picture, but hopefully he's right. As soon as can be.
I believe the brother - would have been
[ In Reply To ..]
among the first to desert. Though the lure of a secure military career was strong for him as a youth, his roots in that family and a town that took much pride in literally centuries of being a "sanctuary" for outcasts and rebels would have been stronger. I believe it would have been the first place he would have felt the imperative to defend at the first sign of open armed conflict.

The co-worker (who refuses to be called "boss," LOL) is someone I really admire, but truth be told, he's not all that different from other Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians and Persians I have met living in the diaspora. He was a "quick study" when it came to figuring out how to be free, but I know he worries about those he left behind who for one reason or another have not been as fortunate.

TY for your kind words.
I hoped that and am glad you think he returned to family. - Not everyone is equipped to take

on this kind of moral challenge, and some of those who stay loyal to the government against their families and towns will never get over what it does to them.

I lived decades in Southern California, where at least some survivors of probably every diaspora there is end up. Students from 115 official nations alone were at my local college my last year there. My family and my husband's family both escaped terrible conditions in central Europe, one of the world's more frequent battlegrounds, before World War I. DH's extensive European family was Jewish and died to the last person during WWII.

One needs a hopeful vision. Only 3 small stumbles backward for one big stride one forward is an advance.

Assad: There Are 'definitely' Terrorists Among Syrian RefugeesFeb 10, 2017
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claims in a new interview that there are "definitely" terrorists among the Syrian refugees displaced by his country's civil war. “You can find it on the net. The same picture that you saw them, in some cases ... those terrorists in Syria, holding the machine gun or killing people, they are peaceful refugees in Europe or in the West," Assad said during an interview with Yahoo News published on Thursday. When asked about how many terrorists could also ...
