Poor little Charlie Gard

The judge would not let them take him him, ruled against. They put him in Hospice, took off his oxygen and he died. I simply cannot understand why these parents had to go through a court instead of coming straight to the USA when there was still some time to have tried the treatment. Judges, doctors and hospitals obviously know more than the parents and have the rights, not the parents.;

This person always has something more important to say.

I was really upset by this one because the government had say so over this poor baby.

It is not that I do not feel for those who are hungry. I just would not have thought this was some sort of a contest to see whose story was the saddest.

Here, I'll help. They are the posts with intelligence, insight and a broader world view than worrying about one tangential situation that has nothing to do with setting policies. Continually, you all choose topics by the "I know a guy," one single person who is affected by some special tangential situation. It is tantamount to a gossip column and about as meaningful.

because the government was paying for his care. Had the parents been willing to foot the bill themselves, they could have taken him anywhere they chose.

I lived in Britain for several years. Their National Health Service does, indeed, limit care, and there are instances where their medical practices fall short of the standard of care we expect in he U.S. My son needed allergy shots to treat his severe allergies, which the NHS would not authorize. I took him to an allergist in private practice (not paid by the NHS), and he got his allergy treatment.

The NHS will not pay for certain expensive or experimental treatments or some treatments we in the U.S. consider standard. In those cases, patients can go to a doctor outside of the NHS system and pay for whatever treatment they feel they need.

They had to get permission to take Charlie to the US. The judges didn't give them that permission. They gave them nothing but NO.

Maybe you lived in England but do you agree the government should interfere with parents' rights to care for their children and seek treatment they would want.

Seems to me there are too many people telling us what we can and cannot do.

Anonie beat me to it, but to reiterate--the parents raised money on their - own to pay for treatment in the US

That the experimental treatment was unlikely to help? Dr. Hirano is chief of the Division of Neuromuscular Disorders at Columbia University Medical Center, and an attending physician at NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital. Also note, the British Government was willing to foot the bill as long as there was hope. It was only after the brain damage due to seizures did the British doctors give up hope and the American doctor concurred with their opinion. The parents may have rights, but is it necessary to prolong a life that will never have a QoL ?
