James Hood dies at 70

What a change this man lived through--from fighting to register in an all-white university in Alabama, to seeing the first black President of the United States. And to have played a role in that evolution--RIP James Hood.

Before he died he did admit his stance on segregation was totally wrong and one of the great regrets in his life.

George Wallace's state sovereignty speech, delivered on the steps of the university's auditorium entrance, a position he assumed with the expressed purpose of blocking James Hood and Vivian Malone from final payment of enrollment fees. After Wallace defied the US Attorney General who accompanied the students and refused their entry, Commander-in-Chief and President Kennedy mobilized the Alabama National Guard who in turn escorted them into the building. Later that day, the president delivered his televised civil rights speech, the text of which is linked below. It recounts the events of the day. The next morning, within hours of that speech, Medgar Evers met his fate in the driveway of his Jackson, Mississippi home after two assassination attempts, one via Molotov cocktail lobbed into the carport at his residence two weeks prior, and the second via an unsuccessful attempt to run him down with a car.

Particularly remarkable is the full-circle journey James Hood took from that day to the point in time where he was able to not only personally forgive Governor Wallace, but to encourage others to embrace the sincerity of the governor's apology and his evolution from firebrand racist to civil rights sympathizer. Concurrent with his journey was Myrlie Ever's 31-year quest for justice in the case of her husband's murder.

With the aging and passing of the American iconic civil rights heroes, the imperative to keep their cause alive, dynamic and relevant falls on the shoulders of those who have reaped the benefits of their personal integrity and sacrifice.

Even the governor (who was deadset against desegregation) eventually realized how wrong he had been:

In the late 1970s, Wallace announced that he was a born-again Christian and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his past actions as a segregationist. He said that while he had once sought power and glory, he realized he needed to seek love and forgiveness.

In 1979, Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: "I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over."

I just read the healines that Russel Means passed away. I cannot tell you how sad that makes me. DH and I kept up with his progress when he was sick. We prayed for his well being.
