Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen has launched a stinging attack on the Republican party by comparing them to Nazis.
Incensed by the Republican's vote last nigth to repeal President Obama's health care law, Congressman Cohen used the Holocaust to attack the party in a speech to a near-empty House chamber.
He likened their rhetoric on the issue to that of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.
'They say it's a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels', Mr Cohen said.
'You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually people believe it. Like blookd libel. That's the same kind of thing', he added.
'Blood libel' is an anti-Semetic term used for centuries to accuse Jews of murdering Christian children in order to use their blood in religious ceremonies.
Sarah Palin used the term recently to accuse the media of 'blood libel' for blaming her for the Arizona shootings.
Mr Cohen's outburst has done little toward decreasing political vitriol between the two parties which lawmakers had hoped would be more civil in light of the gun masacre that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona earlier this month and killed six people.
His rant continued: 'The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believe it - and you have the Holocaust.
'We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover', Mr Cohen added.
Mr Cohen, who is Jewish, said his speech is being taken out of context and being highlighted for political gain.
He said the point he was trying to make was that lies are wrong and that Republicans are telling lies about the health care law.
'Last night, I was speaking off the top of my head and I mentioned big lies and I guess that 'biggest lie' reminds me of Goebbels and the big lie was responsible for the Holocaust', Mr Cohen told USA Today.
