maritime borders (big distinction) - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The U.S. maritime borders are far away. This article should not be construed as ships coming to U.S. borders. (Nor is this the first time this has happened.)
Thanks for posting this. - sm

I tried briefly yesterday to find lines of distinction for the maritime borders, but had something else to do, so I had to abandon my search. I knew they were far from the US borders, but not sure exactly. I was just coming back again to look it up, and here is your post. So thanks!
here's a link - sm

I didn't find it particularly easy to research, particularly since the news article says "maritime borders" rather than boundaries.
The borders aren't that far away. Did you look up the miles? - Truthhurts

Take your pick:
Baseline: 14 miles
Territorial: 13.8 miles from the baseline
Contiguous: 27.6 miles from the baseline
Exclusive Economic: 230 miles from the Territorial
Iran has warheads that can go further than that. I'm not saying that they are carrying warheads or that they are going to be a threat, but you can figure they do have the equipment to strike the main land from the maritime border.
See this report prepared by the National Air and Space Intelligence Center with significant contributions from the Defense Intelligence Agency Missile and Space Intelligence Center and the Office of Naval Intelligence.

Love your post. News said Iran could be as - close as 12 miles from USA.
[ In Reply To ..]
And USA ships will be following every move Iran makes. Still, what the heck is Iran trying to do??
no, that's impossible - sm

The maritime boundary of the United States is greater than 12 miles. Please provide a reference.
Here ya go! - 12 miles.

Baseline
Main article: Baseline (sea)
Normally, the baseline from which the territorial sea is measured is the low-water line along the coast as marked on large-scale charts officially recognized by the coastal state. This is either the low-water mark closest to the shore, or alternatively it may be an unlimited distance from permanently exposed land, provided that some portion of elevations exposed at low tide but covered at high tide (like mud flats) is within 12 nautical miles (22 km; 14 mi) of permanently exposed land.
Territorial sea
A state's territorial sea extends up to 12 nautical miles (22.2 km; 13.8 mi) from its baseline. If this would overlap with another state's territorial sea, the border is taken as the median point between the states' baselines, unless the states in question agree otherwise. A state can also choose to claim a smaller territorial sea.
Contiguous zone
The contiguous zone is a band of water extending from the outer edge of the territorial sea to up to 24 nautical miles (44.4 km; 27.6 mi) from the baseline, within which a state can exert limited control for the purpose of preventing or punishing "infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws and regulations within its territory or territorial sea". This will typically be 12 nautical miles (22 km; 14 mi) wide, but could be more (if a state has chosen to claim a territorial sea of less than 12 nautical miles), or less, if it would otherwise overlap another state's contiguous zone. However, unlike the territorial sea, there is no standard rule for resolving such conflicts and the states in question must negotiate their own compromise. The United States invoked a contiguous zone out to 24 nmi on 24 September 1999.[2]

there is a difference between baseline, territorial sea, and contiguous zone -- not to mention the exclusive economic zone. If you can tell us which of these discrete calculations represents the "U.S. border" referred to in news reports, we would all benefit.
You provide a reference that it is greater. - Article from NOAA shows 12 miles.

U.S. Maritime Limits & Boundaries
Maritime limits and boundaries for the United States are measured from the official U.S. baseline, recognized as the low-water line along the coast as marked on the NOAA nautical charts in accordance with the articles of the Law of the Sea. The Office of Coast Survey depicts on its nautical charts the territorial sea (12 nautical miles), contiguous zone (24nm), and exclusive economic zone (200nm, plus maritime boundaries with adjacent/opposite countries).

I'm not the poster you are responding to - but I provided the reference above
[ In Reply To ..]
We don't know which boundary the news reports are referring to - the territorial sea? The contiguous zone? The exclusive economic zone? All of these represent maritime boundaries. That was my point. The excerpt you provided makes this issue clear.
no, we can't take our pick - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Maritime boundaries are exceedingly complicated. The baseline, the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, and the exclusive economic zones are all part of the equation and are not easily determined by looking up the miles.
"Each coastal State may claim an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) beyond and adjacent to its territorial sea that extends seaward up to 200 nm from its baselines...."
"Take your pick" was just a saying. You knew exactly - Truthhurts

what those borders are and how they are depicted. Like I said, they depend on how they want to count them. If the U.S. and Iran would like to argue over maritime borders, it would take years for it to go through the International court who handles such cases. By that time, it would be too late so why bother.
The other poster was right, too. The ships could come as close as 12 miles. Remember how close they were when they were in the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago? The borders there are much less than 3 of the maximums I posted (I didn't look at my post on border maximums before answering you.) If it were the case of using the maximum border, the Gulf of Mexico would have been off limits for them.
Actually, no. I do NOT know exactly how those borders are depicted - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
And I was very clear about that. It's obviously quite complicated, as there is the territorial sea, the contiguous zone, and the exclusive economic zone. We can't possibly know WHAT the reports are referring to when they simply say "U.S. Boundary." Don't take it personally, please. I'm not trying to argue with you.

Iran Is Being Defiant AgainNov 29, 2009I only posted the first couple paragraphs and am posting the link to read the rest of the article. (that's a laugh), will be able to stop them without us having to jump in there. There's no way we can bring peace to the world on 3 major battles.
