Motivation? - Meh

I don't understand the motivation of the killing. I thought they were against Americans. This person is British. I thought ISIS just want Americans to leave them alone.

Perhaps motivation - sm

is to create a large scale war. Thankfully, apparently, the United States is not moving into full scale war and hopefully, certainly, not without support. Thus, by attacking citizens of other countries there might be a call for a stronger response from others to join with the U.S. Hopefully, this tactic does not work, but could perhaps be the motivation.

Isis wants to kill "nonbelievers" - Laura

[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't matter what color, shape or where they come from - that's the misunderstanding that some feel this all goes back to the Iraq war - this is a deeply-held belief of radical Islam that all "non-believers" should either convert or be killed. It's time for the Muslim world to stand up against radical Islam and condemn it - why aren't they?

Many Americans Want to Know Why Muslims Aren’t Condemning ISIS - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
ABC News’ Laura Ingraham, Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Fox & Friends and other U.S. media commentators say that Muslims are silent and complicit in the barbarian crimes of ISIS. Fox News host Andrea Tantaros said that all Muslims are the same as ISIS, and implied that all Muslims should be met “with a bullet to the head”.

Why don’t we hear Muslims condemning the barbarian ISIS terrorists?

Turns out they are loudly condemning ISIS … but our press isn’t covering it.

See link.

If you listen to the entire segment, you will find that Tantaros is talking about Islamic jihadists that behead people - not Muslims....I think there might be a difference?

this to(she said) "the history of Islam...they have been doing this for years...and it can only be solved with a bullet to the head."

My opinion of what she said is that her recommendation is somewhere between a bullet in the head for the black-dressed terrorist or/and every Muslim that walks the earth.

Andrea Tantaros said:

"If you study the history of Islam, our ship captains were getting murdered. The French had to tip us off. I mean these were the days of Thomas Jefferson. They've been doing the same thing. This isn't a surprise. You can't solve it with a dialogue. You can't solve it with a summit. You solve it with a bullet to the head. Its the only thing these people understand, and all we've heard from this president is a case to heap praise on this religion, as if to appease them."

You will note there that she said "this religion," not "this radical group" or "ISIS" or "these extremists;" she said "this religion," meaning Islam. She is conflating Islam with ISIS. If conflating Islam with ISIS is okay with Christian conservatives, then perhaps it would also be okay if everyone viewed all Christians to be like Fred Phelps, Sr. of the Westboro Baptist Church, preaching God’s hatred for America and denouncing the entire world except his followers as imminently doomed to Hell.

I don't view all Christians like the radical ones, and I don't view all Muslims that way either, nor should anyone, least of all the President of these United States. Barack Obama has that part absolutely correct. George W. Bush also got that part correct. I wonder what Andrea Tantaros had to say when Bush took off his shoes and spoke at the mosque less than a week after 9/11? (see link for video) Did she or anyone at Fox News then accuse Bush of appeasing Islam? Where was their outrage?

little bits of information and insights. You need to watch/listen/read from many different sources and then make up your mind. Frankly, in this segment, Maher didn't really say that much.

Present were
Bill Maher - comedian/commentator
Ben Affleck - obviously just an actor (and at best trying hard to keep up with the debate)
Nicholas Steele -- Nicholas Donabet Kristof (born April 27, 1959) is an American journalist, author, op-ed columnist, and a winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. He has written an op-ed column for The New York Times since November 2001 and The Washington Post says that he "rewrote opinion journalism" with his emphasis on human rights abuses and social injustices, such as human trafficking and the Darfur conflict.
Sam Harris - Harris is a contemporary critic of religion and proponent of scientific skepticism and the "New Atheism".[
Michael Steele--former head of the Republican National Committee

Kill nonbelievers or create a following - like a gang/political party

[ In Reply To ..]
A political vacuum has created the ability for this violent group to flourish and gather a following. This is about leadership and power using religion and nationalism as an organizing tool.

I've attached an essay by Fareed Zakaria that addresses how these groups gain credibility and power and why.

http://fareedzakaria.com/2014/09/05/why-they-still-hate-us-13-years-later/

I don't think it has much to do with religion other than using religion as a tool to separate us from them.

So the question of why doesn't the Muslim world stand up--
1. This is a violent group and if you are not well organized and strong you are going to die. (that rules out the response that you see in more democratic countries--demonstrations, elections) and where are they going to get the arms and money to fight them?

2. Perhaps they are not certain what they are supporting instead? They have little to no experience with nation building.

By the U.S. and coalition offering support in training, for instance, the Iraqis to take back their own land and the air strikes to help beat back some of the more strategic holdings of ISIS, we can allow a more natural evolution of power in the area.

Personally, I think the biggest problem is that the region has very little role model for political organization. When you take away the power structure, they divide up once again in tribal/religious groups.

From Zakaria article:
...if the dictatorships faltered, the state could collapse, and that beneath the state there was no civil society — nor, in fact, a real nation. Once chaos reigned across the Middle East, people reached not for their national identities — Iraqi, Syrian — but for much older ones: Shiite, Sunni, Kurd and Arab.

To bring this back to our normal discourse...the Bush administration never should have destroyed Iraq. Typically, in American History we have destroyed a dictatorship and then replaced it with another (supporting it economically) to assure its favoritism towards us. I think those days might be over in the MidEast...we just haven't figured out what to do next.
