HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. — An elderly central Pennsylvania couple is fighting a court order forcing them to use township-supplied water because they say the chlorine in it makes the woman sick.
Donald and Janet Burket were forced by a Blair County judge to tap into Greenfield Township's water system in 2008 to comply with a local ordinance. That ruling was upheld by a state appeals court.
The Burkets complied by connecting township water to a basement sink and paying a monthly rate for the service, but continued to use well water in all other taps in their home.

and they not allowed to use it.
This is an example of where the REAL power lies in government in this country: on the local level. City/borough/township/etc. ordinances always seem to rule in the end. (At least they did in the township I live in.)
It's also an example of government forcing you to (1) purchase the product (very expensive) and, in this case, (2) to USE the product and pay the associated fees forever.
Reminds me of those who are angry that Obama wants people to have health insurance, which costs a lot less in the long run than hooking up a new water system and using it (even though this couple IS paying for the costs as if they DID use it).
It's the way things work in this country. The real power lies within YOU at the local level. The people who attend municipal meetings and voice their objections have a better chance of changing things than others.
it seems that the water and sewer guys always win out, regardless of how many people are against it. I saw the same thing happen in my township, and I think it's a shame.
I'm glad your town listens to its people. That's democracy at its best!
