More than 50 House Democrats announced their opposition Thursday to the bipartisan tax-cut proposal brokered by the White House and Republicans.
Led by Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), 54 Democrats signed on to a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) calling the plan "fiscally irresponsible" and "grossly unfair."
"We support extending tax cuts in full to 98 percent of American taxpayers, as the President initially proposed," Welch wrote on the letter. "He should not back down. Nor should we."
Welch wrote that the nation "is wading into fiscal quicksand" by borrowing the money to pay for the bill that "disproportionately favors millionaires and billionaires, threatens our ability to create jobs, grow the middle class and protect seniors," Welch said.
"Even as Republicans seek to add billions more to our national debt in tax cuts to the wealthy, they oppose extending unemployment benefits to workers and resist COLA [cost of living adjustment] increases to seniors," he said.
