GOP: Stop Punishing the Unemployed

Posted: Apr 12, 2010

Coburn and his ilk are poised to replay the Bunning debaucle of last month as the Senate goes to work today on debating ANOTHER temporary 30-day unemployment benefits extension in advance of the larger measure that would extend benefits until the end of the year.  Dems are prepared to empower the pubs by ignoring their own Paygo measures, rather than diffusing the pub argument and exposing them for the obstructive hypocrites we all know they are as both parties line up to make political hay off the misery of folks hit hardest by the recession.

There is a comment box where both or either of the parties can be urged to do their jobs in no uncertain terms, so take your pick if you feel inclined to help the 9.8% of your fellow Americans who are still without work without a meaningful jobs bill in sight.

I think you might find there are more out of work than 9.8% - Backwards Typist

If you take those who quit looking and those who ran out of benefits, the unemployment numbers would be higher.

In my own county, the unemployment has now reached 11%. Last year at this time, it was 8%. Instead of going lower, it has persistently risen. My own son has been out of work for 2 years and you know what happens if you are out of work for that long... companies don't want to hire you. From the beginning, he has gone to Career Link, watched the papers, gone to Job Fairs. You name it...he tried it and still no job.

My daughter lost one of her jobs... - NMMT

in October and she still hasn't found another to replace it. She has two jobs because neither one of them pay very much and she is a single mother with a son to raise. Because she still holds down one job, she doesn't qualify for unemployment. She has had to do a lot of sacrificing and we have had to help her buy groceries. Her landlord has been taking less rent money only because he realizes no one else would be able to move in and he wouldn't make anything. Still she's found no job and she searches daily. She's even been to the VA for help because she's a vet (Desert Storm). Thanks Obama! That stimulus has been a real lifesaver (insert sarcasm here). :(

In a rare moment, I find myself on the same page with you. - You raise a good point

[ In Reply To ..]
especially since the arbitrary percentages Congress uses when picking and choosing which claimants can and cannot qualify for extended benefits in the higher tiers do not account for those folks you mentioned or the underemployed. I believe the current cut off percentage is 8.5. Those who live in states whose rates fall below that number are disqualified for extended benefits in those higher tiers.

My state teeters on the 8.3 number, but the major cities within the state have rates that exceed that number. In my case the city is at 8.9...which should qualify claimants who live here, but in fact does not, according to which way the wind blows up there in DC.

My understanding is that were all unemployed, underemployed and those who have stopped looking for jobs accounted for, the rate would jump as high as 16%-18%, a more relistic yet very scarey number. All the more reason to sound off any chance we get. For those posters who are reading this exchange, I implore you to help out by signing the petition. The alleged UI so-called "bums" are in the extreme minute minority and for the most part, the rest of them are simply innocent bystanders who through no fault of their own find themselves without work looking for jobs that do not exist.

Case in point: A 61 year old laid off due to outsourcing, too young to retire, unemployed for 5 months, sending out as many resumes per week as is humanly possible, knowing full well the obstacles and handicap 61 years of life introduces into the mix. Welcome to my world.

I live in a little town outside of Las Vegas. I was a construction truck driver for 30 yrs. I've never been out of work for more than a week that I didn't want to. I've been out of work for 2 years now. I finally gave up and decided to try MT, went to and graduated from Career Step, and still can't get a job. Oh, by the way, NVs unemployment rate is somewhere around 13.2% now.

Dylan Ratigan had on his show today that the real jobless rate is 16.9% - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
the Long term unemployment is 6.5%. Sounds really good doesn't it?

He stated the U.S. needs 170,0000 more jobs to get the economy going.

Also, from another source, Paulson had a few uneasy remarks made at a conference. I've been looking to see if I could find his speech, but no luck so far.

Dylan doesn't like Paulson, stated he's the problem, not the remedy since he once worked on Wall Street, eitheir Goldman Sachs or Lehman Bros. Either way, how does someone who collects millions of dollars in bonuses from a company that practically goes under save for the TARP, get the highest financial position with the government?

I'm hoping MSNBC posts his show from today. It was really interesting.

It is 17.9% where I live in Michigan by s/m - MIMT

so just imagine if they really counted the underemployed and those that have fallen off unemployment due to no more extensions, we would be at 36%. Things have got to change.

Why would anyone vote in a democrat congress who is continuing on with the rise in unemployment doing nothing (i.e. working on nothing) to fix a bad situation. Not to mention all the other bad decisions they are making with our economy and other issues.

Elect a democratic congress??? No thank you.

Elect officials that have shown and proven they know how to fix the problems or have solutions whether they be democrat or republican or independent? Yes please.

I'm not voting for anyone because of their political party anymore. I'm focusing on the representatives who have proven they know what they are doing (i.e. I will listen to their ideas before I look for that little (R) or (D) after their name.

Right now democrats are showing they do not know how to fix the problems, and will not listen to anyone's ideas unless they have that little (D) after their name, no matter whose fault it is. Time to stop the blame and work for the people. Unfortunately this congress is not doing that. We are more than a year or two after electing the last officials and they are doing nothing to help the American people. I say vote out the incompetence.

Looks like the democratic party is panicking with a website like this one.

Did you notice the stock market topped 11,000? Thats a - 3,000+ point rise since O took office.

Caterpillar Helps Power Dow Above 11000

The Dow climbed 8.62 points, or 0.08%, to 11005.97, its highest close since Sept. 26, 2008. Caterpillar was the measure's best performer, up $1.46, or 2.2%, to 66.73, after Baird upgraded its investment rating on the industrial giant's stock to "outperform" from "neutral." The firm cited higher machinery production rates and an expected increase in global mining capital spending. - Taken from the Wall Stree Journal.

I'm not sure about your area of the country, but not all of us out here buy a caterpillar machine every day. It is because of caterpillar why the dow went up. That does not mean the economy is improving just because caterpillar was upgraded.

This rise in the stock market is not a sign the the economy is doing great now, and nobody has anything to worry about. People are still out of work. Unemployment is on the rise. Government is still printing money and spending and doing nothing to help the economy.

The stock market is manipulated. Big business controls it. When I start to see jobs being created, unemployment going down, gas prices stabilizing etc, then I will say to which ever president is in office and whoever is in congress - way to go.
So what do you suppose accounts for the steady climb - and stabilization?

16.9% unemployment is broad number - Pinko
[ In Reply To ..]
and does not represent unemployment but unemployment plus under utilization. Huge difference here. 16.9% is inflated and just relative number. If 16.9% were the actual unemployment rate, there would be greater industry collapse and diminution of entities providing what is considered luxury goods, and that is not happening.

Seems to me that the right has attached themselves to this number and going to play it for all its worth, when in the bigger picture, isn't worth much but political yank.

Realistically, at this point after a recession, the current numbers aren't that bad, and it has nothing to do with political maneuvering, it has to do with manufacturing and service. Once the banks start loaning realistically, those numbers will pick up, but the days of playing fast and loose with money is long gone.

The fact that this process takes time, and not quick enough for some and exploited by the game of politics, is not lost on everyone.
And this answers my question exactly how? - Coburn said all I need to hear about
[ In Reply To ..]
pubs viewpoint of unemployed fellow citizens, since he thinks of 17+ million people (their spouses and children) as a "relatively small number of people" who would be affected by his (self-proclaimed) "courageous act" of delaying and obstructing the vote on a 30-day EMERGENCY extension of unemployment benefits while they shuck and jive and continue to ignore the larger bill that would give the claimants a MODICUM of peace of mind by extending the benefits until the end of this year...especially since we all know they are also poised to block any jobs bills initiatives that in any way could make Obama and the democratic Congress look good before November.
You are being ridiculous. My God.. You should be a - politician or salesman. However,
[ In Reply To ..]
I see right through your slams. What you need to educate yourself on is the fact that every time a pub asks where the money is going to come from, they only get bashed (by someone like yourself) for even asking. Obama has NO solutions except to spend money into oblivion... money we dont have. His stimulus bill was USELESS. He has not a clue what he is doing, and Biden was correct in saying that you cant have on-the-job training as president, although thats exactly what is happening. Well, then again, Obamas defensiveness and huge ego will not allow him to admit he was wrong. So, will you?
How do you figure. The words were his, not mine. - He was not talking about Paygo
[ In Reply To ..]
when he made those remarks. He was turning a blind eye to 17+ millions Americans, their spouses and children and trivializing them as "a relatively small number of people." Bet the 6,000 unemployed in his districts who lost their benefits after April 3 didn't appreciate it one bit, but then again, I guess he thinks he can spare that many votes next time around. And don't EVEN get me started on all the stuff he voted for in a heartbeat that as not paid for in advance when it served his own poltical agenda.

Since I have been unemployed for 5 months myself, I can assure you that I keep myself up to the minute on all the latest developments and do not need you to educate me on this subject. The waiting I am doing as we speak for the INEVITABLE passage of the extension (after he gets done grandstanding for a couple of days) puts my household in the DISTINCT position to have its electricity cut off and I am borrowing money for groceries. Because of him, it is taking 20 days to pass a 30 day extension, so they will have to turn arond and start debating it AGAIN in less than a week. Tellme how that makes any sense whatsoever?

Forgive me if I confine myself to the subject of the thread and ignore the rest of your rants that do not relate to the issues at hand.
